2 Bestuderen Listening (general) Inleiding Niet alleen de spreker is bezig of heeft het druk, maar de luisteraar ook! Luisteren is dus meer dan horen alleen. Het is een activiteit. Wat moet je dan allemaal doen? Hoe kun je zorgen dat begrijpt wat die ander zegt, zeker als die ander een vreemde taal spreekt? We geven je een aantal tips in de vorm van een stappenplan. Voorbereiding Denkwerk Voordat je gaat luisteren, vraag je je een aantal dingen af: Wat is de titel? Als je de titel van een programma of iets anders leest of hoort, kun je gaan nadenken over dat onderwerp. Vraag je af wat je kunt veranderen. Wat is het doel? Zorg dat je duidelijk voor ogen hebt waarom je naar dat stuk of die uitzending gaat luisteren. Je kunt ook een lijst met vragen maken die je na het luisteren moet kunnen beantwoorden. Dat helpt je bij het luisteren. Stel jezelf vragen zoals: Over wie gaat het? Wat is het probleem? Wat is de oplossing? Wat gaat men doen? Een nieuwsuitzending heeft als doel je te informeren over wat er allemaal gebeurt in de wereld. Een documentaire wil je ook informeren, maar dan over een specifiek onderwerp. Als je weet waarom je luistert en ook waarom die ander iets verteld, dan kun je heel gericht gaan luisteren en die dingen eruit halen die voor jou belangrijk zijn. Woorden Als je weet wat het onderwerp van het luisterfragment is, dan kun je alvast woorden opzoeken die bij het onderwerp horen. Dat helpt zeker als je naderhand echt gaat luisteren. Wanneer je bijvoorbeeld een instructie krijgt in het gebruiken van een bepaald apparaat, is het nuttig om alvast wat belangrijke woorden/vaktermen op te zoeken. 1

3 Tijdens het luisteren Kernwoorden Luister naar kernwoorden en woorden die bij het onderwerp horen. Het scheelt dat je niet alle woorden hoeft te begrijpen en te verwerken. Het gaat erom dat je de boodschap begrijpt. Om te zorgen dat dat lukt heb je van tevoren nagedacht over het onderwerp en het doel. Aantekeningen maken Maak aantekeningen tijdens het luisteren. Schrijf de belangrijkste zaken op. Maak geen hele zinnen, maar gebruik losse woorden. Dat scheelt tijd. Aansluiting Vraag je af of wat je hoort klopt met wat je al wist en wat je van het onderwerp verwachtte. Non-verbale communicatie Let op de lichaamstaal en de toon van de spreker. Ook daar haal je veel informatie uit. Als een klant boos klinkt aan de telefoon en je daarop let, heb je al gauw door dat het waarschijnlijk om een klacht gaat, ook als je niet alles verstaat. Oogcontact Als je je gesprekspartner ziet, houd je oogcontact. Dat is niet alleen beleefd, maar helpt ook om de aandacht erbij te houden. Laat iemand uitspreken Laat je gesprekspartner uitspreken. Maak geen zinnen voor hem/haar af, val hem niet in de rede. Concentreer je Schakel je eigen gedachten uit, luister naar de ander Neem de tijd Neem de tijd om de informatie in je op te nemen en erover na te denken. Trek geen voorbarige conclusies. Toon belangstelling Toon door je houding en gedrag belangstelling voor het verhaal van je gesprekspartner. Dus geen poppetjes tekenen of opvallend op je horloge kijken! Zet je mobieltje uit. 2

4 Controleren Stel vragen Dit kun je doen als de ander uitgesproken is, maar ook tussendoor als het een langer verhaal is. Laat op een goede manier weten dat je iets niet begrijpt. Wacht even het goede moment af en stel je vraag. Stel zoveel mogelijk open vragen. Je stelt ook vragen om te zorgen dat je alle informatie krijgt die je nodig hebt, dat je je doel bereikt dus. Hierbij zijn de wh-questions handig. Vat samen Vat de belangrijkste punten uit het gesprek samen. Vraag je gesprekspartner of je samenvatting klopt. What do I have to do now? Where does the... go? When do I have to...? How can I...? Why do I have to...? Who can I call for...? Do you mean to say that? Reageren Nu moet je laten zien dat je de boodschap goed begrepen hebt en op de juiste manier reageren. Je moet bijvoorbeeld een handeling verrichten als je instructies voor je werk of een apparaat hebt gekregen. Misschien moet je wel iemand feliciteren of condoleren. Wat je moet doen hangt dus af van het doel dat jij en je spreker hadden en van het onderwerp van het gesprek. Tips Luisteren is een vaardigheid en vaardigheden moet je trainen. Dat betekend dat je veel moet oefenen. Daarbij is variatie ook heel belangrijk. Luister naar de tv, films zonder ondertiteling (of met Engelse ondertiteling. Op dvd s kun je hier vaak voor kiezen.), podcasts etc. Maak maar eens een lijstje van zaken waar je naar kunt luisteren om te oefenen. Onderstreep die dingen die je leuk vindt om te doen! 3

5 Meetings Vergaderingen Je kunt het stappenplan uit het algemene deel bijvoorbeeld goed voor vergaderingen gebruiken. Kijk maar: Stap 1: Voorbereiden Je kunt je op een vergadering voorbereiden door de agenda te bestuderen, de verslagen van vorige vergadering (notulen) te lezen en navraag te doen over de onderwerpen die op de agenda staan. Daarnaast kun je een lijst met woorden maken die bij de onderwerpen op de agenda staan. Vertaal deze woorden. Stap 2: Tijdens het luisteren Houd tijdens de vergadering de agenda en je lijst met vragen bij de hand. Deze helpen je om gericht te luisteren. Ze geven dus ook aan waar je niet naar hoeft te luisteren en wanneer het niet erg is als je iets niet begrijpt. Stap 3: Controleren Stel de vragen die je voorbereid hebt en vragen om te concluderen of je alles goed begrepen hebt. Vink de vragen af die aan de orde geweest zijn. Je kunt ook de agendapunten die behandeld zijn afstrepen. Het kan ook handig zijn om kort op te schrijven wat er gezegd is bij elk agendapunt. Je kunt dan later aan iemand anders vragen of je het goed hebt opgeschreven. Ook dat is een controle. Stap 4: Reageren Je reageert door controlevragen te stellen, vragen te beantwoorden die gesteld worden, suggesties en voorstellen doen. 4

6 Presentations Presentaties Bij een presentatie kun je denken aan een uitleg van een manager over een procedure op het werk, uitleg van een collega over de werkzaamheden die gedaan moeten worden of een praatje over veiligheid op het werk. Presentaties kunnen dus ook informeel zijn en vrij kort. Her gaat hier om monologen. Eén persoon is aan het woord en vertelt iets aan iemand anders. Deze presentaties lijken op instructies. Stap 1: Voorbereiden Je bereid je voor door weer na te denken over het onderwerp van de presentatie als dat kan. Als je niet van tevoren weet dat je zo n presentatie krijgt, dan kan dat natuurlijk niet. Houd dan voor ogen dat iemand je iets wil uitleggen en dat je dus na de presentatie moet weten hoe iets in zijn werk gaat. Probeer de stappen te volgen. Pak pen en papier bij de hand om op te schrijven wat je moet doen. Dat helpt je om tijdens en na het luisteren te controleren of je alles goed begrepen hebt. Stap 2: Luisteren Laat zien dat je actief luistert door af en toe te knikken dat je iets begrepen hebt. Steek je hand op en stel een vraag als je iets niet begrijpt. Stap 3: Controleren Het maken van aantekeningen, het stellen van vragen en het geven van non-verbale signalen zijn middelen voor jezelf en de spreker om te controleren of de boodschap goed overkomt. Stap 4: Reageren Reageren doe je als dat nodig en van toepassing is. Meestal wordt je tijdens of aan het einde van de presentatie gevraagd of alles duidelijk is of niet. Er wordt ook gevraagd of er nog vragen zijn. Aarzel niet om vragen te stellen als je iets niet begrijpt. Je kunt vragen om iets te herhalen wat je niet hebt verstaan. Je kunt ook vragen wat een woord betekent. In sommige gevallen bestaat de reactie eruit dat je een handeling goed kan uitvoeren. Bijvoorbeeld de juiste handeling bij een ontruiming. 5

The goals of the internship are for the student to learn the job and to gain work experience. I. C II. C III. The students can sleep there. A dorm room usually has beds for at least two students. The toilets and bathroom are shared with several students.
