Christiaan Jörg, is op 27 april j.l. door de Harense Burgemeester Fennema gedecoreerd als Ridder in de Orde van Oranje Nassau. Het bestuur is verheugd dat zijn voordracht is bekroond. Voor de heer Jörg, die thuis de versierselen, in aanwezigheid van zo n 25 collega s, vrienden en familie, kreeg opgespeld, was de uitreiking een totale verrassing. Met deze Koninklijke onderscheiding hebben de uitzonderlijke verdiensten van de heer Jörg op het terrein van Aziatische kunst in Nederland en daarbuiten een welverdiende erkenning gekregen. Hiddema) In de gesprekken met de Faculteit der Geesteswetenschappen van de Universiteit Leiden wordt op dit moment op een plezierige en nuttige manier van gedachten gewisseld over de hernieuwde VVAKleerstoel Asia-Europe Intercultural Dynamics, ofwel Azië-Europa interculturele dynamiek, met speciale aandacht voor kunst en materiële cultuur in de sociale, economische en politieke context en hedendaagse ontwikkelingen in historisch perspectief. We hebben goede hoop dat we dit najaar concrete informatie kunnen geven over de nieuwe leerstoel, die voor een groot deel wordt gefinancierd met behulp van anderen. In maart j.l. werd het bestuur blij verrast door een bericht van mevrouw mr. E. Veder-Smit, sinds jaren VVAK-lid, dat zij aan de sponsoring ter continuering van de leerstoel aan de Universiteit Leiden wil meehelpen door een bijdrage voor een nader te bepalen aantal jaren. Zij gaf hiermee gehoor aan de oproep van de voorzitter, opgenomen in de toelichting op de agenda van de Algemene Ledenvergadering op 31 maart j.l. Vanaf deze plek laten we mevrouw Veder-Smit weten haar zeer erkentelijk te zijn voor dit genereuze gebaar. We hopen dat dit voorbeeld goed doet volgen, want alhoewel het de goede kant op gaat met de financiën is er meer nodig. Het ziet er naar uit dat de heropening van het Rijksmuseum in april 2013 plaatsvindt. De precieze datum is ons nog niet bekend. Alle medewerkers van het Rijksmuseum zijn druk doende met de noodzakelijke voorbereidingen. Het VVAK-bestuur is inmiddels gestart met de organisatie van de Paviljoendagen op vrijdag 11 en zaterdag 12 oktober 2013 (safe the date!). Tijdens deze dagen is de focus vooral gericht op het Aziatisch Paviljoen en bedoeld voor onze leden en liefhebbers van Aziatische kunst. Naast een succesvol fundraisingdiner en een interessant symposium, hopen we op N I E U W S B R I E F V E R E N I G I N G V A N V R I E N D E N D E R A Z I A T I S C H E K U N S T 1

2 enthousiaste presentaties van alle conservatoren Azië van het Rijksmuseum voor de VVAK-leden. Uiteraard stellen wij de leden tijdig op de hoogte van de inhoud van het programma. Op 27 mei j.l. is de VVAK met een kraam aanwezig geweest op de zonovergoten Japanmarkt op het Rapenburg in Leiden. Een aantal bestuursleden hebben folders verspreid en voor een aantrekkelijke prijs oude nummers van Aziatische Kunst verkocht. Dit alles, om de VVAK wat meer bekendheid te geven en hopelijk een aantal nieuwe leden te werven. Dit laatste blijkt aardig gelukt te zijn, gezien de nieuwe aanwas op en vlak na de markt. Het was vooral een geschikt moment om de Vereniging weer eens onder de aandacht te brengen van potentiële belangstellenden en liefhebbers van Aziatische kunst. Dat er die middag ook nog spontaan VVAK-leden langskwamen in de kraam, werd zeer op prijs gesteld. Volgend jaar zijn we zeker weer van de partij. (foto: Rebecca Roskam) Per 3 juli a.s. is Robert Ligtermoet, oud-archivaris van de Universiteit Leiden, aan de slag om het VVAKarchief te ordenen en te inventariseren. Het Rijksmuseum heeft ondermeer de taak, te waken over het VVAK-archief. Het bestuur van de VVAK is Ineke Peterse en Han van der Lelie, archivarissen bij het Rijksmuseum, dankbaar dat de heer Ligtermoet deze klus de komende maanden onder hun hoede bij hen op het archief kan uitvoeren. Het bestuur roept alle VVAK-leden op zich in te zetten voor de vergroting van het ledenaantal van de Vereniging. We zouden er in moeten slagen het huidige ledenaantal van 600 volgend jaar te vergroten tot minimaal 1000 leden. We beseffen dat dit veel is, maar het huidige aantal is te weinig om de ambitie van de Vereniging voor de toekomst goed waar te maken. U kunt nu al iemand lid maken voor 2013, het jaar waarin onze collectie weer in volle glorie te bezichtigen is. In bijgaande editie en volgende nummers van Aziatische Kunst vindt u een leden-werven-leden-kaart. Mocht u iemand een lidmaatschap voor het kalenderjaar 2013 cadeau willen doen, dan kunt u van deze kaart gebruikmaken. De ontvangers krijgen een lidmaatschapskaart die toegang geeft tot onze collectie in het Aziatische Paviljoen en het Rijksmuseum; daarnaast krijgen zij het tijdschrift Aziatische Kunst toegestuurd en zijn zij welkom bij alle VVAK-activiteiten. Ook kunt u via het secretariaat (vvak@denboerenvink.nl) informatieve VVAK-folders en kleurenaffiches (A3-formaat) opvragen, die u op in het oog springende plaatsen kunt neerleggen en -hangen, en waarmee u potentiële nieuwe leden op de hoogte brengt van het bestaan van de VVAK. Het Wereldmuseum toont schitterende sieraden van goud en zilver en oogverblindende weefsels uit de Indonesische archipel. De tentoonstelling bestaat uit een internationale bruikleen van topcollecties van privé-verzamelaars uit Europa en de Verenigde Staten en een selectie uit de vermaarde historische collectie van het Wereldmuseum zelf. Zilver uit Batavia Het mythische Indonesië komt tot leven in de prachtige gouden sieraden uit de Javaanse hofcultuur ( ), die het Gemeentemuseum deze zomer voor het eerst toont. Gelijktijdig toont dit Haagse museum unieke zilveren objecten die VOC-ambtenaren in de zeventiende en achttiende eeuw in Batavia lieten maken, zoals tafelzilver, sirihkistjes en gedenkborden. In 2010 ontving het Gemeentemuseum een schenking van twintig stukken VOC-zilver van architect C.J. Wagenaar. Deze schenking vormt de aanleiding tot deze tentoonstelling. 4 Excursie naar Parijs, vrijdag 21 tot en met zondag 23 september Programma Dag uur: Vertrek vanaf Amsterdam Centraal per Thalys. Opstappen op Schiphol of Rotterdam is ook mogelijk uur: verwachte aankomst in Parijs op station Gare du Nord. Middag: Bezoek aan Musée Cernuschi ( met tentoonstellingen over Japans theeceramiek en Vietnamese kunst. Ontvangst door Christine Shimizu, directrice van het museum en samensteller van de expositie met Vietnamese kunst. Avond: Vrij te besteden. Dag 2 Ontbijtbuffet in hotel. Bezoek aan Musée Guimet ( met aansluitend een rondleiding in Musée d'ennery ( Dit voorjaar is in Parijs na een jarenlange restauratie een bijzonder museum met Aziatische kunst heropend, het Musée d'ennery. Clémence, echgenote van de Franse schrijver Adolphe d Ennery, bracht tijdens haar leven een bijzondere collectie kunst uit China en Japan bij elkaar, die ze in 1894 schonk aan de Franse staat. Deze collectie, destijds wel aangeduid als dierentuin van de verbeelding, getuigt van de groeiende belangstelling in Europa voor het Verre Oosten. Clémence d' Ennery richtte haar stadpaleisje speciaal in om haar schitterende verzameling tot zijn recht te laten komen en wilde deze ook openstellen voor belangstellenden. De collectie bevat onder andere een groot aantal Japanse netsukes (gordelkopen), ivoren beeldjes en houten of aardewerken siervoorwerpen. Daarnaast zijn er voorbeelden van kostbaar Japans lakwerk, boeddhistische beeldjes en voorwerpen, die speciaal waren bestemd voor Chinese literati, gemaakt van porselein, hoorn van de neushoorn of halfedelsteen. De beste Franse meubelmakers kregen opdracht om speciale vitrines voor de woonvertrekken te maken in een stijl die passend werd geacht voor de verzameling. Het museum is nu een afdeling van het Musée Guimet en ligt niet ver hiervandaan. Avond: vrij te besteden. Dag 3 Ontbijtbuffet in het hotel. 5 Zaterdag 29 september, Excursie Enkhuizen Na succesvolle excursies naar Hoorn en Middelburg leiden de voetsporen van de VOC ons nu naar de meest oostelijke punt van Noordholland: Enkhuizen. Een stadje dat de welvaart te danken heeft aan de Zuiderzee in de Gouden Eeuw. In het monumentale centrum is nog steeds veel terug te vinden dat herinnert aan de VOC-periode. Tijdens een stadswandeling vertellen ervaren gidsen over de VOCgeschiedenis van de stad. Enkhuizen staat vooral bekend om haar havens, het Zuiderzeemuseum en haar monumentale gebouwen zoals de Koepoort, de Drommedaris en het Waaggebouw. We bezoeken ook het Snouck van Loosenhuis. Het achttiende-eeuwse deel van dit pand is het voormalige woonhuis van de familie Snouck van Loosen, gefortuneerd door de handel in de tijd van de Oost- en de West-Indische Compagnie. Het interieur bevat nog vele authentieke stijlkenmerken. Als er voldoende tijd is bezoeken we ook de zeventiende-eeuwse stadsgevangenis. J.W.Swaan: Zaterdag 6 oktober, Lezing Museum Volkenkunde Leiden Lezing en tentoonstelling Het Terracottleger en de eenwording van China Dr. Oliver Moore, conservator China in Museum Volkenkunde, houdt een lezing bij de tentoonstelling Terracottastrijders uit China, die is opgesteld in de vernieuwde Chinazaal. In deze expositie in Leiden zijn archeologische vondsten uit het graf van Qin Shihuang, China s eerste keizer, te bewonderen. Dankzij een unieke samenwerking met twee Chinese instituten, het Shaanxi Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau en Shaanxi Cultural Heritage Promotion Center is Museum Volkenkunde er in geslaagd drie terracotta strijders naar Leiden te halen. Samen met andere grafvondsten bieden ze inzicht in de Chinese cultuur en samenleving ten tijde van de Qin-dynastie ( v.chr.). De bijbehorende informatieve publicatie is in de museumshop verkrijgbaar voor maar 5,95. Tijdens uw bezoek op 6 oktober zijn de vernieuwde opstellingen in de zalen Japan, Korea, Centraal Azië, India en Indonesië ook te bezoeken, alsook de nieuwe Boeddhazaal. 6 Oliver Moore is sinds 2011 conservator China in Museum Volkenkunde en sinds 1998 als universitair docent Chinese kunst en materiële cultuur verbonden aan het Sinologisch Instituut in Leiden, tegenwoordig Leiden University Institute for Area Studies (LIAS), School of Asian Studies. Voordat hij in Leiden aantrad, werkte hij als conservator in het Department of Oriental Antiquities in het British Museum. Hij studeerde Chinees aan SOAS, London University (BA 1985) en promoveerde in 1993 aan Cambridge University op de sociale geschiedenis van de Tang civil service examens. Tussen 1982 en 1987 heeft Moore een aantal jaren in Shanghai Chinees gestudeerd en gewerkt. In zijn huidige onderzoek staan de verschillende vormen van visuele cultuur in de laat-keizerlijke en vroegmoderne Chinese geschiedenis centraal en bestudeert hij de vroege geschiedenis van de fotografie in China. Daarnaast is hij betrokken bij projecten over de circulatie van beelden tijdens de Chinese Middeleeuwen en ten tijde van de eerste gedrukte boeken in China. Gratis met Museumjaarkaart Aanmelden Secretariaat VVAK, vvak@denboerenvink.nl, telefoon: Zaterdag 27 oktober, Algemene Ledenvergadering en lezing Geelvinck Hinlopen Huis, Amsterdam Lezing Over tempels, inscripties en misverstanden: Charles-Louis Fábri en de Khajuraho apsaras in het Rijksmuseum Dr. Anna Ślączka, conservator Zuid-Aziatische Kunst (India) in het Rijksmuseum, belicht in deze lezing de bijzondere Khajuraho apsaras uit het Indiaase Madhya Pradesh in de collectie van het Rijksmuseum. Anna Ślączka studeerde Indologie aan de Universiteit Leiden, met als hoofdvakken Sanskriet en Indiase kunst. In 2006 promoveerde zij aan dezelfde universiteit op Hindoetempels en rituelen. In 2007 verscheen bij Brill Publishing een handelseditie van haar proefschrift: Temple Consecration Rituals in Ancient India: Text and Archaeology. Na haar promotie werkte zij als research fellow bij het International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS), the École française d Extreme Orient in Pondicherry en Universiteit Leiden. Vervolgens is ze als docent Sanskriet aan Universiteit Leiden verbonden geweest. Sinds 2009 is Ślączka als conservator verbonden aan het Rijksmuseum. Anna Ślączka Aanmelden Secretariaat VVAK, vvak@denboerenvink.nl, telefoon: Zondag 18 november, Bezoek aan privécollectie porselein Bezoek aan privé-collectie porselein Opnieuw heeft een van de VVAK-leden tezamen met zijn echtgenote, zijn privé-verzameling opengesteld voor VVAK-leden met belangstelling voor Chinees ceramiek. De collectie bestaat voornamelijk uit sculpturen, gebruiksgoed en miniaturen, overwegend afkomstig uit de Tang tot Yuan-periode. Het bezoek is toegankelijk voor maximaal twintig personen. Indien zich méér personen aanmelden, wordt er een wachtlijst aangelegd. In deze geldt: wie het eerst komt (zich aanmeldt), het eerst maalt. 7 Commissies Op 26 maart j.l. sprak een vertegenwoordiging van het bestuur met de voorzitters van de VVAKcommissies. Op de agenda stond: terugblik op 2011, programma 2012, en de weg naar de opening van het Aziatisch Paviljoen in In het vervolg is het wellicht een beter idee om jaarlijks in het najaar het programma voor het komende jaar met de voorzitters commissies af te stemmen, opdat er geen dubbele afspraken op eenzelfde datum vallen en de activiteiten goed op elkaar aansluiten qua diversiteit aan onderwerpen. De VVAK-commissies zijn ingesteld in 2009 naar analogie van destijds duidelijk naar voren gekomen interesses van de leden. Zo is vrij willekeurig een indeling tot stand gekomen. Langzamerhand ontstaat de vraag in hoeverre deze indeling doelmatig is. Bijvoorbeeld onderwerpen als Zuid-Oost Aziatische en Boeddhistische kunst e.a. worden nu niet gedekt, en er zijn overlappingen. Tijdens het gesprek van bestuur met de voorzitter van de Commissie Indonesische Kunst is besloten de naam van deze commissie te wijzigen in Commissie Zuid en Zuid-Oost Azië, waaronder Indonesië. Met de nieuwe naam is het duidelijker dat er ook aandacht gegeven wordt aan activiteiten op het terrein van kunst uit India, Vietnam, Laos en Cambodja. Ceramiek Commissie Verslag van VVAK-lid Sjouk van Enst: Op 5 en 12 maart volgden 58 personen (inclusief twaalf leden van collega-verenigingen) de cursus Japans porselein van drs. Menno Fitski. In twee keer drie uur bracht hij een overweldigende hoeveelheid informatie. In een rustig opgebouwd betoog, aan de hand van afbeeldingen en korte filmpjes, leerde hij ons klein te kijken naar porselein. Menno maakte ons er ook van bewust, dat je eerst moet weten hoe Japans porselein gemaakt wordt en welke verschijnselen en historische gebeurtenissen in en buiten Japan invloed hebben gehad op de ontwikkeling en waardering van Japans porselein. De theeceremonie en machtige theemeesters, de ambitieuze Hideyoshi, een opkomende burgerklasse: drie van de vele aspecten die de revue passeerden. We konden bijna geen genoeg krijgen van Menno s verhalen. Toch zullen wij nog wel enige tijd moeten wachten op een vervolgcursus. Om in de sfeer te blijven kan de website soelaas bieden. De Ceramiek Commissie treft voorbereidingen voor een serie lezingen in 2014 over capita selecta van Chinees keramiek. Commissie Oost-West-interacties De lezing Oost-West, gevat in zilver op 2 juni j.l. werd bezocht door ruim 35 leden. VVAK-lid Harold Bos hield een boeiend verhaal over monturen op Aziatisch porselein dat vaak pas na aankomst in Europa werd bevestigd. Hij toonde veel voorbeelden uit diverse collecties, of die als veilingstuk op de markt zijn verhandeld. Op 2 juni heeft de commissie vergaderd over het programma voor Er zal o.a. weer een vervolg op In de voetsporen van de VOC worden georganiseerd in het najaar. We bezoeken dan de belangrijkste voormalige VOC-plekken in Amsterdam. In het voorjaar organiseert de commissie een lezing over een kenmerkend oost-west-onderwerp. On show are over 200 objects taken from one of the Ethnological Museum's most recent collections. The exhibits range from textiles (including some acquired just this year in 2011), to jewellery and rattan, via Daoist scrolls. Numerous photos enrich the panorama still further. The exhibition does not limit itself to material culture, however. In the West, however, little is really known about the real living conditions of the population. It is precisely this point that this exhibition addresses. The Library, holds an early 17th century version of the Bamboo Cutter in a set of two picture scrolls. This version is believed to be the earliest extant example and is recognised as one of the finest of its kind - a masterwork by a Kano School artist of the early Edo period. The scrolls are conserved by Restorient, a conservation studio based in the Museum Volkenkunde, Leiden, The Netherlands, specialising in Japanese works of art on paper and silk. It shows visitors how Siebold collected his fish in Japan between 1823 and The exhibition explains how the collected fish were painted, described, preserved and finally shipped to the Netherlands. The fish in this exhibition have rarely been shown to the public since the collection was formed. Most of the vivid water colour paintings by Kawahara Keiga are shown to the public for the first time in history. Highlights of this exhibition are the water colour paintings, the two meter long shark and the large sunfish, which is almost five feet long. Sweden, Stockholm, Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities The doll collection of Hatsuko Ohno, until Exhibition of dolls from the collection of the famous doll-maker Hatsuko Ohno ( ). The dolls represent warriors, fairytale figures, children, Kabuki actors, musicians, and the everyday scenes of Japanese life. They have an apotropaic function at folk festivals and religious ceremonies and also serve as amulets and talismans.
