The emphasis is on social engineering rather than on theoretical elaboration. Welzijn en verzorgingsstaat Binnen de onderzoeksgroep gaat onze huidige aandacht vooral uit naar vier onderwerpen: 1. de sociale zorg voor hoogbejaarden, inzonderheid de longitudinale patronen in het gebruik van formele en informele zorg 2. zorg als nieuw sociaal risico: in dit GOA-project richten we het zorgvraagstuk expliciet naar de doelgroep van gezinnen met kinderen. Een cruciaal onderzoeksluik is de eigen survey bij 3000 gezinnen, op grond waarvan onze onderzoeksgroep de zorgprocessen zal analyseren. Een tweede onderzoeksluik behelst de zogenaamde macro-zorgbegroting: we zullen een overzicht opstellen dat de bestedingen weergeeft van de verschillende overheidsniveaus voor gezinnen met kinderen. Ten derde zullen wij het huidige dienstenaanbod voor gezinnen met kinderen in kaart brengen. Het betreft zowel een kwantitatieve als een kwalitatieve analyse, d.w.z. we inventariseren niet enkel de omvang van het aanbod, maar ook de structuur ervan (fragmentering, diversiteit, flexibiliteit). 3. lokale sociale conjunctuurbarometer: dit onderzoek is een kortlopende opdracht (6 maanden) van de Vlaamse overheid in het kader van het decreet Sociaal Beleid van maart Om het lokale bestuur in staat te stellen het eigen sociaal beleid te evalueren, ontwikkelen we een sociale conjunctuurbarometer. Dit project richt zich op de inventaristatie van de toegankelijkheid en beschikbaarheid van lokale gegevens, het opstellen van criteria voor de selectie van relevante indicatoren, de constructie van een lokale sociale foto en de toetsing van de bruikbaarheid van het instrument bij de lokale besturen. 4. het Persoonlijke-Assistentiebudget: in de zorg voor personen met een handicap is een budgetsysteem ontwikkeld waardoor thuiswonenden zelf hun zorgverleners kunnen aanbesteden en hun zorg organiseren. Na de evaluatie van de experimenten, analyseren we nu het vigerende systeem. In 2003 vond daartoe een grootschalige survey plaats, met een uitgebreid kwalitatief gedeelte. Vrouwenstudies The centre for women's studies at the university of antwerp wants to stimulate research and does research about the situation and position of women in public life. 2 Within the department BSVB the research unit VTBP is developing research within the areas of leisure, future and policy planning. Considering the social development of the leisure sector the above mentioned themes deal with as well the private and public sector. Current research is thus dealing with: 1. Leisure and tourism; 2. Leisure and the participation of specific target groups (that is to say 'third age'); 3. Policy planning and related management problems, oriented towards f.i. fitness centres in diverse institutional structures, sport organisations, public sport structures; 4. Strategic planning of sport organisations in function of the analysis of specific future developments (trend analysis). Verplaatsingsgedrag Universiteit Hasselt Voorspellen van het verplaatsingsgedrag van individuen Verkeersveiligheid Universiteit Hasselt De onderzoekslijn 'strategische analyse' concentreert zich voornamelijk op instrumenten en modellen die analyse van de verkeersveiligheid voor strategische doeleinden toelaat, ondermeer ter ondersteuning van planvorming en beleid. De onderzoekslijn 'risico- en evaluatiestudies' concentreert zich vooral op de relatie tussen infrastructuur, omgeving, gedrag en de impact hiervan op de verkeersveiligheid. Vakgroep Vergelijkende cultuurwetenschappen Het Centrum voor Interculturele Communicatie en Interactie aan de is in 2000 gestart als een onderzoeksgroep met aandacht voor fundamenteel onderzoek en voor implementatie in het culturele veld. In dat laatste geval werden reeds opdrachten van beleidsondersteunend onderzoek uitgevoerd, en wordt regelmatig in het maatschappelijke veld opgetreden. CICI verenigt onderzoekers met een diversiteit aan specialismen en vakgebieden, allemaal op het snijvlak van identiteit, interculturaliteit en diversiteit. De volgende vakgebieden kunnen onderscheiden worden (zie onderzoek): - interdisciplinaire antropologie - vergelijkende religiestudies - genderstudies - postkolonialiteitstudies - performatieve antropologie - toegepast onderzoek interculturaliteit CICI heeft een aantal zelfstandig werkende onderzoekers tewerkgesteld, met focus op religie, gender, antropologie, maar ook op cultuur, cultuurverschil, verstedelijking, beeldcultuur en cultureel pluralisme en interculturaliteit. Dit brengt producten voort, die variëren van wetenschappelijke boeken en artikels in belangrijke tijdschriften van elk van deze vakgebieden, maar evenzeer producten zoals films, essays, vormingspakketten en nota's voor verantwoordelijken in de maatschappij. VAKGROEP TRANSPORT EN RUIMTELIJKE ECONOMIE The department of Transport and regional Economics is active in the entire field of transport and regional economics. It studies both policy and management issues. It has gained an enviable research reputation in these fields over the past few years. In recent years the Research Group has carried out a lot of research which is related to the analysis of the transport economic demand, the problem of mobility, maritime economics and port economics, tourism, the problem of localisation, environmental planning and urban and regional economic developments.two of the main aims of the Research Group are to deliver high-quality scientific products as well as to be actively present at the national and international scientific forum. In addition, the Research Group wants to stimulate the interaction between the research projects in its field on the one hand and the teaching activities at the University of Antwerp. VAKGROEP TRANSPORT EN RUIMTE Transport economics: transport modelling, maritime porteconomics. Regional and urban studies: regional economics, urban economics, regional planning. Tourism: economic and geographical aspects. The main objective of the research activities is to support government ( local, regional, central ) decision making in the above mentioned fields. VAKGROEP TRANSPORT EN RUIMTE The Research Group Transport and Regional Economics was founded in Its name indicates that the activities of the Research Group are mainly situated in the transport economics and regional-economic fields. It has gained an enviable research reputation in these fields over the past few years. In recent years the Research Group has carried out a lot of research which is related to the analysis of the transport economic demand, the problem of mobility, maritime economics and port economics, tourism, the problem of localisation, environmental planning and urban and regional economic developments. //..//..Two of the main aims of the Research Group are to deliver high-quality scientific products as well as to be actively present at the national and international scientific forum. In addition, the Research Group wants to stimulate the interaction between the research projects in its field on the one hand and the teaching activities in the Faculty of Applied Economics of UFSIA on the other. //..//..The group fits this purpose well, as many of its members are actively involved with the transport economic, economigeographic and regional economic courses within UFSIA, a.o. in the orientation of Transport Economics (licence Applied Economics) and in the complementary training programmes Maritime Sciences (GAS-UA) and Maritime Law and Inland Navigation Laws (GAS-UFSIA). //..//..The Research Group intends to pursue the strategy carried out so far, in the future and to concentrate on policy-relevant research, which might have a broad social impact. By doing so, it will continue to pay attention to the problem of mobility, the development of transport economic models, port competitiveness, long-lasting tourism and the problem of regional and metropolitan development.

3 Vakgroep Technische bedrijfsvoering Lean Enterprise Research Center: Er wordt onderzoek verricht naar meer performante methodes inzake productie-organisatie, ontwerp van productielijnen, en de interne materiaalbehandeling. Binnen de hedendaagse strategische methodes zoals Lean Thinking en 6 Sigma, toetst de vakgroep de technieken op hun bruikbaarheid. De onderzoeksthema's zijn dan ook praktijkgerichte ingenieurswetenschap op zijn best. Supply Chain Research Center: Het samenwerken van verschillende bedrijven om een product afgewerkt aan de klant te bezorgen gebeurt binnen logistieke netwerken of Supply Chains. De vakgroep onderzoekt baanbrekende methodes om dergelijke netwerken beter te laten functioneren. Hierbij spelen concepten als "robuuste planning" en "voorraad-transport optimalisatie" een centrale rol. Onderzoekscentrum voor Productielogistiek: Deze associatieonderzoeksgroep is een samenwerking tussen de vakgroep Technische Bedrijfsvoering en de Hogeschool West-Vlaanderen. Binnen deze groep wordt onderzoek verricht naar de diverse planningssystemen (ERP, APS en MES) die de productie aansturen, om zo beter inzicht te krijgen in de dynamiek, de specifieke rol van elk systeem en de functionaliteiten. Ook wordt onderzoek verricht naar fabrieksautomatisering, specifiek gericht naar materiaalbehandeling, lijnbevoorrading, opslag ("in-plant logistics"). Onderzoeksresultaten worden in studiedagen naar de bedrijven gebracht. Studenten maken er kennis mee door praktijkopdrachten in het labo van deze onderzoeksgroep. Vakgroep Studie van de derde wereld De Vakgroep Studie van de Derde Wereld (CTWS) behoort tot de Faculteit Politieke en Sociale Wetenschappen en concentreert haar onderwijs en onderzoek hoofdzakelijk op de hedendaagse politieke en ontwikkelingsproblemen van de Derde Wereld, en duurzame ontwikkeling in Noord en Zuid. Sinds enige jaren spitst de Vakgroep zich toe op conflict-analyse, conflict-beheersing en post-conflict-reconstructie, in het bijzonder van de nieuwe interne conflicten in de periferie sinds het einde van de Koude Oorlog. De Vakgroep poogt enerzijds deze conflicten - hun dynamiek en structuur - te duiden vanuit een meervoudige invalshoek die steunt op een ruime veldervaring, en anderzijds het instrumentarium te exploreren voor conflictbeheersing en - resolutie, met globale duurzame ontwikkeling als eindoplossing voor conflicten. In dit kader werden zowel areaonderzoekscellen als thematische onderzoekscellen opgericht, met links naar Vakgroepen behorend tot andere Faculteiten en onderzoeksinstellingen in binnen- en buitenland. Specifieke regio's die inzake onderzoek en onderwijs aan bod komen zijn: Sub-Sahara Afrika, het Midden-Oosten, Noord-Afrika, Latijns-Amerika en het Verre-Oosten. De Vakgroep organiseert tevens wetenschappelijke congressen en seminaries en onderhoudt een documentatiecentrum over de hoger vermelde regio's en thema's. Vakgroep Strafrecht en criminologie Het Institute for International Research on Criminal Policy (IRCP) werd in 1992 opgericht als de Onderzoeksgroep Drugbeleid, Strafrechtelijk Beleid en Internationale Criminaliteit en kreeg in 2002 zijn definitieve naam. IRCP, dat geïntegreerd is in de Vakgroep Strafrecht en Criminologie van de Faculteit Rechten van de, stelt zich tot doel kwalitatief hoogstaand en internationaal relevant wetenschappelijk onderzoek te verrichten of te begeleiden op het brede terrein van het strafrechtelijk beleid. Het onderzoekscentrum Bestuurlijke Veiligheidsvraagstukken richt zich op: * De studie van de verruiming van de maatschappelijke betekenis (van objectieve" onveiligheid naar "subjectieve" gevoelens, overlast, wantrouwen in overheden...) en de wijzigende sociale relevantie (van "traditionele" criminaliteitsvormen naar voedselonveiligheid, milieubedreiging, corruptie, terrorisme...) die in de laatmoderne samenleving aan de notie onveiligheid gehecht wordt * De studie van het bestuurlijke en gerechtelijke beleid dat ontwikkeld wordt ten aanzien van het nieuwe onveiligheidsvraagstuk, met bijzondere aandacht voor afsternrnings- en integratieproblemen tussen: publieke versus private beleidsvoering centrale versus decentrale beleidsvoering internationale, landelijke en lokale beleidsvoering sectoriele versus integrale/geïntegreerde beleidvoering. Tevens gaat bijzondere aandacht naar de implicaties hiervan voor het vraagstuk van de vrijwaring van mensenrechten * De studie van het handhavings- en bestrijdingsdispositief dat betrokken is bij de uitvoering van het beleid ten aanzien van dit evoluerend onveiligheidsvraagstuk, met specifieke aandacht voor de grensvervaging en bevoegdheidsverplaatsing in de uitvoering (politiediensten bestuurlijke toezichthouders nieuwe veiligheidsberoepen leger inlichtingendiensten bijzondere inspectie- en opsporingsdiensten private beveiliging, bewaking en opsporing zelfregulerende instanties actieve burgerparticipatie...). Het Instituut voor Sociaal Drugsonderzoek (ISD) werd opgericht in 2002 en maakt deel uit van de Vakgroep Strafrecht en Criminologie van de Faculteit Rechten van de. Het ISD is in de eerste plaats een onderzoeksgroep, met als doel het verwerven en overdragen van kennis omtrent de verschillende aspecten van roesmiddelengebruik, -beleid en handel in roesmiddelen, vanuit een sociaal-wetenschappelijke oriëntatie. De termen 'drugs' en 'roesmiddelen' verwijzen naar alle psychoactieve substanties, ongeacht hun legale status. Het ISD is uitdrukkelijk sociaal-wetenschappelijk gericht, en bekijkt roesmiddelengebruik als gewoon menselijk gedrag dat voornamelijk door contextuele en sociale variabelen vorm krijgt. Het ISD vertrekt doelbewust niet van het klassieke strafrechtelijke of medische interpretatiekader, omdat criminalisering en pathologisering al te vaak tot ernstige tekortkomingen in de constructie van kennis leiden. De Onderzoeksgroep Criminologie en Rechtssociologie analyseert en evalueert vanuit een kritische invalshoek ontwikkelingen in misdaad en misdaadcontrole. Op basis van onderzoeksresultaten worden beleidsaanbevelingen geformuleerd die de uitbouw van een rechtmatig, sociaal rechtvaardig en emancipatoir overheidsbeleid ondersteunen. VAKGROEP SOCIOLOGIE EN SOCIAAL BELEID The department organises and co-ordinates sociological research at UFSIA. Joint research by the various research groups is of central importance, besides the co-ordiantion and promotion of academic activities of individual members. Individual research by members of the department, which is usually conducted within the scope of doctoral studies, corresponds closely with the areas of interest of the department as a whole. Vakgroep Sociologie Sociologie bestudeert de menselijke interactie. Interactie vindt minimaal tussen twee personen plaats. Sociologen gaan na hoe het groepsverband interactie en sociaal handelen beïnvloedt. In interactie herkennen sociologen bepaalde patronen en mechanismen. De regelmaat is afhankelijk van de omstandigheden waarin men leeft en de groep waartoe men behoort... of wil behoren. Rolpatronen, maatschappelijke normen en andere groepsverschijnselen vormen dus een belangrijk studiedomein van de sociologie. Daarnaast interesseert de sociologie zich ook voor de samenhang van en de wisselwerking tussen groepen. Ook de sociale bewegingen en veranderingen komen aan bod. Denken we maar aan de gewijzigde rol van de kerk en het gezin, veranderingen in de maatschappelijke posities van vrouwen en mannen, de acties voor medezeggenschap, de toenemende automatisering en de gevolgen ervan voor de tewerkstelling en het onderwijs, het wijzigen van tradities als gevolg van veranderingen in waarden en normen,? Vakgroep Sociale economie De Vakgroep Sociale Economie is verantwoordelijk voor onderwijs, onderzoek en dienstverlening in het domein van de sociale economie. Het domein van de sociale economie is zeer breed. Naast de fundamentele disciplines micro-economie, macro-economie en econometrie zijn de activiteiten van de vakgroep vooral toegespitst op de arbeidsmarkt en het arbeidsmarktbeleid, de inkomensverdeling, de sociale zekerheid, de publieke financiering en het begrotingsbeleid, de determinanten van de economische groei en de publieke economie. De onderzoeksactiviteiten van de vakgroep Sociale Economie verlopen via de onderzoeksgroep Sherppa (Study Hive for Economic Research and Public Policy Analysis).

4 Vakgroep Sociale agogiek De vakgroep sociale agogiek is één van de tien vakgroepen binnen de Faculteit Psychologie en Pedagogische Wetenschappen van de Universiteit Gent. Ze is verantwoordelijk voor onderzoek, onderwijs en dienstverlening op het gebied van de sociale agogiek. De sociale agogiek omvat de wetenschappelijke studie en theorievorming over pedagogisch handelen in de bredere sociale context van instituties en praktijken die sociale en culturele ontplooiing nastreven, zoals bijvoorbeeld het (forensisch) welzijnswerk, het sociaal - cultureel werk met jeugdigen en volwassenen, de samenlevingsopbouw, interventies in de sociale, culturele en vrijetijdssfeer. Vakgroep Sociaal recht informatie voorlopig niet beschikbaar VAKGROEP RECHTSWETENSCHAPPEN Collective research at the Law Faculty is organised within the framework of the Centre for the Foundations of Law (CGR). Research focuses on philosophical, ethical, historical and other factors that have shaped (and continue to shape) positive law. The CGR organises research in three areas: //..(1) 'The Law in Society' The CGR sets up interdisciplinary research projects relating to issues that concern the foundations and basic concepts of law, and may be approached from a philosophical, ethical, sociological, economic and/or historical angle. Areas that have been studied thus far are law and tolerance in a multicultural society; the right of self-determination; and security and/in the law. //..(2) 'Constitution and Politics in an Historical Perspective' This project stems from the realisation that the study of the constitution and the study of the balance of political power are inextricably linked: there is clearly a degree of interaction between the constitution and politics, between law and power. This interaction can be demonstrated by means of a historical study of the Belgian institutions from 1831 to the present. Research currently focuses on: The foundations of laws created under exceptional legislative powers; Leopold III, The king, the country, the war; Monarchy and democracy; Ministerial responsibility in Belgium from 1831 to The recommendations of the Council of State in constitutional matters. //..(3) 'The rights of vulnerable law users : The CGR intends to carry out research into socially relevant issues concerning vulnerable law users. Research was conducted into the foundations of basic socio-economic rights, the notion of Refugee as defined under the Geneva Convention, and poverty as a legal concept. Het onderzoek spitst zich toe op vragen in relatie tot psychopathologie en bijzondere aandacht gaat uit naar psychodiagnostische, psychotherapeutische en seksuologische thema?s. Tevens is er een onderzoekslijn waarbij de geschiedenis van de psychologie en toepassingen van psychoanalyse op kunst worden bestudeerd. Vakgroep Procesrecht, arbitrage en internationaal privaatrecht informatie voorlopig niet beschikbaar Vakgroep Politieke wetenschappen informatie voorlopig niet beschikbaar Vakgroep Personeels en Organisatie Management niet beschikbaar Vakgroep Personeelsbeleid-, arbeids- en organisatiepsychologie Binnen de missie van de, streeft de Vakgroep Personeelsbeleid, Arbeids- en Organisatiepsychologie ernaar: Psychologen te vormen tot experten in personeelsbeleid, organisatiepsychologie en arbeidspsychologie, die een goede basiskennis hebben van de consumentenpsychologie en de industriële relaties. Hoogstaand wetenschappelijk onderzoek uit te voeren en te publiceren omtrent personeelsbeleid, organisatiepsychologie, arbeidspsychologie, en eventueel consumentenpsychologie en industriële relaties. Onderlinge afstemming te realiseren tussen de grote onderzoekslijnen en de onderwijsverantwoordelijkheden, bijvoorbeeld door terugkoppeling van eigen onderzoek naar onderwijs en door betrekken van doctoraats- en licentiestudenten in lopend onderzoek. Oplossingsalternatieven uit te kienen en aan te bieden voor maatschappelijke en bedrijfsproblematieken door onderzoek en door ontwikkeling van instrumenten en technieken. Vakgroep Pedagogiek informatie voorlopig niet beschikbaar Vakgroep Orthopedagogiek De Vakgroep Orthopedagogiek stelt zich tot doel om op methodische wijze het handelen met kinderen en volwassenen in moeilijke opvoeding- en levenssituaties te onderzoeken. Zij vertrekt hierbij vanuit een integratieve, inclusieve en participatieve visie. Op dit ogenblik is de vakgroep samengesteld uit twee vakgebieden: Onderzoekslijnen voor het vakgebied Orthopedagogiek en Orthoagogiek: ( niet in volgorde van belangrijkheid). These inequalities not only determine welfare but more importantly the 'entitlements'(a. Sen) of the overwhelming majority of the world's population. How these relations were shaped and how policies can mitigate these inequalities and enhance world welfare is the researchfocus of the centre for development studies. //..//..In view of the limited research resources, this general positioning of the centre within this massive thesis rises the demand for selection, specialisation and concentration in sub-themes of this problem. Three domains of special focus can be pointed out where the centre is active as well on an individual level as on research resources provided by external financing. //..//..First and foremost a development centre situated in the north should address itself to so-called 'interface' issues between North and South. The causes, evolution and policies concerning the gap between North and South are extremely complex. The subject permits a lot of different disciplinary approaches but since our centre is embedded in a faculty of applied economics we naturally focus more on these aspects of the gap. Closer cooperation with our sister institutes in Antwerp will enable us to broaden this approach to social, political and cultural aspects of the issues involved. The research in our centre, centred mainly on issues of international trade (international division of labour, intra-industry trade, WTO, etc.) international financial flows (globalisation and debt problems, Tobin taxes, poverty and adjustment programs, etc.) and regional economic integration. //..//..A centre in development studies cannot confine itself only to interface issues. It has to concern itself and have contacts with the 'field'. Indeed a lot of these 'interface' issues cannot be divorced from factors that are inherent to political, social and economic evolutions within these countries and vice versa. Structural adjustment is not understandable without taking into account the evolution of the international environment but adjustment problems and efforts will heavily depend on the internal factors. Therefore the centre has developed a lot of links with institutions in the third world (especially in central Africa, India and central America) were the interaction is both ways. We bring in teaching and research experience on recent tendencies in theory especially in the field of institutional economics and receive a lot of insights in national and local social, political and economic dynamics. //..//..The last domain where the centre is active is the domain of evaluation and sustaining of development actors especially NGO's'. Cognitive developmental psychology: Infancy-research Developmental Psychotherapy: Techniques of Self-reflection, Action and Drama-techniques, including evaluation research Clinical Developmental Psychology and Developmental Psychopathology Follow-up studies are used to gain an understanding of the stability of psychopathology in children, to find pathways and risk factors as well as protective factors. At the present time, the following populations are under study: children with eating disorders, child-psychiatric groups and adolescents with anti-social behavior. Prevention and intervention programs The unit has the following objectives: To give an overview of the literature describing the relationship between childrearing, characteristics of the parents, characteristics of the child, contextual aspects and psychopathology in children. To give an overview of existing prevention and intervention programs aiming at parents and their problemchild(ren). To investigate the relationship between childrearing, characteristics of the parents, characteristics of the child, contextual aspects in children of 8 and 14 years old in a normal and a clinical population. In order to make this investigation possible, an instrument is developed which will explore some parenting skills (positive involvement, monitoring, discipline, positive reinforcement, problem-solving). This instrument may be used in the future to evaluate programmes for prevention and intervention. At a very general level, the unit aims to contribute to: enlarging scientific understanding of the ways in families function improving the evaluation and development of caring programmes in the socialcare sector preventing juvenile delinquency. Traditionally marketing is structured around the main functional areas: product, pricing, communication and distribution management. A further distinction is made depending on the target market characteristics: business marketing, consumer marketing, services marketing and so on. Marketing has a methodological basis, commonly referred to as marketing research. The department applies both qualitative and quantitative elements in research, and accepts the view both are complementary in nature. The department contributes to the further development of theory, concepts and methods in the context of marketing and marketing research. Since marketing is intrinsically an applied discipline, research projects are originating to some extent in practice based marketing problems. In applied research, the department is open for collaboration with organisations for contract research. With respect to fundamental research, the members of the department have recently dealt with issues in marketing communcation, consumer behaviour, distribution, brand equity and subjects on the interface between marketing and micro-economic theory.

De oorsprong van deze kliniek gaat terug tot in 1906 met de oprichting van het "Institiut de Physicothérapie" gehecht aan de nieuwe klinische diensten van de universiteit aan de Pasteurlaan. In 1936 werd de orthopedie hierbij toegevoegd, wat resulteerde tot de naam &apos;kliniek voor Fysicotherapie en orthopedie", later werd Fysicotherapie vervangen door Fysiotherapie. In 1957 verhuisde de Kliniek voor Fysiotherapie en Orthopedie, als eerste, van de Pasteurlaan naar het nieuwe AZ (huidig UZ). In 1968 werd ook de traumatologie aan deze kliniek toegewezen. In 1971 werd het Centrum voor Locomotorische en Neurologische Revalidatie (CLNR) gestart met een hospitalisatiecapaciteit voor 62 patiënten. Zowel gehospitaliseerde als ambulante patiënten kunnen hier terecht voor intensieve revalidatie. In 2004 werd de Kliniek voor Fysiotherapie en Orthopedie onderverdeeld in de dienst Fysische Geneeskunde en Revalidatie met als diensthoofd Prof. dr. G. Vanderstraeten en anderzijds in de dienst Orthopedie en Traumatologie met als diensthoofd Prof. dr. R. Verdonk, tevens voorzitter van de vakgroep Fysiotherapie en Orthopedie, die in 1993 werd opgericht. Vakgroep Financiële economie

Several PhD?s in different fields of EU law and EU institutions have been or are being prepared and specific projects have been or are currently being sponsored or commissioned by institutions and authorities such as, amongst others, the Belgian Federal Government, the Ministry of the Flemish Community, the Fund for Scientific Research and the European Commission. The European Institute also acts as a regular host for foreign researchers. Vakgroep Europees, Publiek- en Internationaal Recht Niet Beschikbaar Vakgroep Economisch Recht Het Instituut Financieel Recht heeft zich sedert zijn oprichting in 1990 tot doel gesteld om via colloquia, nationale en internationale publicaties en onderzoeksprojecten wetenschappelijke duiding te leveren bij de ontwikkeling van het financieel recht en vennootschapsrecht in de Europese Unie en in België. De onderzoeksbenadering benadrukt de juridische interdiscpilinariteit, evenals aandacht voor de multidisciplinair (voornamelijk rechtseconomisch) en rechtsvergelijkende methode. De onderzoekslijn bank- en kapitaalmarktrecht heeft aanleiding gegeven tot de volgende colloquia en verslagboeken: Financiële herregulering in België (1990;) Financieel recht tussen oud en nieuw (1995), Capital Markets and Company Law (2002); Financiële regulering: op zoek naar nieuwe evenwichten, (2002). Deze focus komt tevens tot uiting in het doctoraal onderzoek binnen het Instituut Financieel Recht doorheen de jaren (o.m. K. Byttebier (1992), M. Tison (1997), C. Van der Elst (2001 ). Binnen deze onderzoekslijn wordt tevens bijzondere aandacht besteed aan het privaat bankrecht. De onderzoekslijn vennootschapsrecht? die overigens overloopt in de onderzoekslijnen kapitaalmarktrecht- is van in het begin een kerndomein binnen het Instituut Financieel Recht geweest en heeft sinds onder meer tot colloquia en verslagboeken geleid:het gewijzigde vennootschapsrecht 1991 (1991); het gewijzigde vennootschapsrecht 1995 (1996); behoorlijk vennootschapsbestuur (2003);openbare overnamebiedingen (2007): Als afgewerkte en gepubliceerde doctorale proefschriften binnen dit domein zijn te vermelden K. Het lopende doctoraal onderzoek binnen het Instituut Financieel Recht spitst zich toe op thema?s die zich op het raakvlak van het bank- en kapitaalmarktrecht en andere rechtsdisciplines bevinden, met name het verbintenissen, zaken- en aansprakelijkheidsrecht (F. Ravelingien, L. Van den Steen), de ondernemingsorganisatie en het vennootschapsrecht (D. Bruloot, E. Hellebuyck, K. Maresceau), het financieel toezichtsrecht en het groepsrecht (V. De Vuyst). Deze interdisciplinaire benadering beheerst tevens het lopende projectmatige onderzoek (BRITE? D. Goens). De recenter opgestarte onderzoekslijn insolventierecht besteedt voornamelijk aandacht aan de juridische omkadering van herstelmechanismen voor ondernemingen in moeilijkheden, met nadruk op rechtsvergelijkend en rechtseconomisch onderzoek. Benevens het reeds afgeronde doctoraatsonderzoek (P. Coussement? 2007), veruitwendigt dit zich in lopend beleidsondersteunend onderzoek (RIFLE? , i.s.m. Vakgroep Algemene Economie). Recent wordt binnen het instituut ook onderzoek verricht naar de bescherming van de consument. Het onderzoek binnen het domein van het recht van de intellectuele eigendom is gebaseerd op twee assen. Vooreerst wordt onderzoek gedaan rond basisvraagstukken binnen het recht van de intellectuele eigendom. Daarnaast wordt onderzoek verricht rond recente evoluties binnen het recht van de intellectuele eigendom. Ook hier mondt dit onderzoek uit in talrijke publicaties (bijv. publicaties over de juridische bescherming van databanken, over de harmonisering van het merken- en modellenrecht, over recente rechtspraak van zowel het Hof van Justitie als het Benelux Gerechtshof inzake intellectuele rechten). Dat het verrichte onderzoek ook gericht is op Europese en internationale ontwikkelingen binnen het intellectueel eigendomsrecht, blijkt onder andere uit de deelname aan internationale onderzoeksprojecten en publicaties aangaande o.a. de analyse van al de Europese richtlijnen inzake het auteursrecht, het onderzoek rond het merkenrecht in een internationaal perspectief, en een land per land ontleding van het nationale intellectuele eigendomsrecht Vakgroep Data-analyse De onderzoekslijnen van de vakgroep Data-Analyse zijn -Het ontwerpen van analytische methoden ter ondersteuning van besliskundig testgebruik - Axiomatische analyse van wiskundige modellen in de sociale wetenschappen (meettheorie, beslissingstheorie, social choice theory, fuzzy sets en bibliometrics) en empirische validering van de axioma&apos;s -Mathematische modellering en data-analyse in de psychologie -Analyse van fmri data -Multipele representaties en ICT in het statistiek onderwijs Vakgroep Communicatiewetenschappen De opleiding Communicatiewetenschappen omvat de studie van de productie, distributie en receptie van communicatieboodschappen. Communicatiewetenschap wordt er opgevat als een empirische sociaalculturele wetenschap die vormen en processen van massacommunicatie (in ruime zin) tot studie-object neemt. De finaliteit is dus geen praktische beroepsopleiding : de klemtoon ligt op een opleiding waarbij inzicht in en het kritisch nadenken over media en communicatie in een brede maatschappelijke context centraal staan. Voorop staat het verwerven van wetenschappelijke kennis en vaardigheden binnen het vakgebied, in casu de communicatiewetenschap. De nadruk ligt daarom op theorie en wetenschappelijk onderzoek. Niettegenstaande Communicatiewetenschappen een generalistische opleiding is, wordt er toch gestreefd naar een optimale afstemming op de arbeidsmarkt. Zo wil men academici voorbereiden op de beroepsuitoefening in volgende sectoren : * communicatieonderzoek : media-onderzoek, opinie- en marktonderzoek, wetenschappelijk onderzoek. Het accent ligt op empirisch onderzoek naar de maatschappelijke productie, distributie en receptie van communicatieboodschappen. Het betreft hier zowel zuiver als toegepast wetenschappelijk onderzoek. * communicatie-onderwijs en -vorming : media-educatie in zowel het middelbaar als hoger en universitair onderwijs. Het zwaartepunt ligt bij onderwijs en kritische vorming t.a.v. allerlei vormen en processen van massacommunicatie. * communicatie-advies : beleidsadvies bij mediabedrijven, PR- en reclame-advies bij bedrijven of communicatie-adviesbureaus, voorlichtingsdeskundig advies, mediabeleids- en communicatie-advies bij overheidsinstellingen. Het zwaartepunt ligt op het adviseren van derden omtrent de productie, distributie en receptie van specifieke boodschappen bestemd voor specifieke doelgroepen of omtrent het te voeren beleid binnen specifieke mediasectoren. * communicatiemanagement : mediamanagement, marketingcommunicatie- en corporate-communicatiemanagement. De klemtoon ligt op het leiding geven binnen bedrijven, organisaties en instellingen die zich met de productie en de distributie van massamediale boodschappen bezighouden. De sector van de specifieke mediaproduktie (d.w.z. die sector die de concrete boodschappen maakt: te denken valt aan beroepen als journalist, voorlichter, programmamaker, etc.). Er werd reeds op gewezen dat de studenten geen directe beroepsopleiding wordt geboden, maar dat zij toch in hun afstudeerjaar een aantal op deze beroepspraktijk gerichte opleidingsonderdelen krijgen aangeboden (?Beroepstechnieken Gedruke Media? en

8 ?Beroepstechnieken Audiovisuele Media?). De boven beschreven diversificatie en uitdieping ten aanzien van de vijf vermelde beroepsprofielen zijn niet enkel ingegeven vanuit evoluties binnen de arbeidsmarkt. Een even grote (zoniet nog grotere) rol wordt hierbij gespeeld door wijzigingen in het academische veld en de maatschappij in het algemeen, waardoor nieuwe onderzoeks- en onderwijstopics op de agenda worden geplaatst. Om studenten toe te laten, naast hun algemene wetenschappelijke vorming een zekere specialisatie te verwerven naar één of meer beroepsprofielen toe, werd het curriculum van de tweede licentie onlangs nog hertekend. De tweede licentie krijgt namelijk meer en meer het karakter van een verzameling specifiek communicatiewetenschappelijke optievakken waaruit de student zelf zijn tweede licentieprogramma kan samenstellen. Vakgroep Burgerlijk Recht Het onderzoek in de vakgroep Burgerlijk recht bestrijkt verschillende domeinen van het burgerlijk recht, het notarieel recht en het milieurecht. Personen- en familierecht In het familierecht wordt onderzoek verricht met betrekking tot afstamming en alimentatie (Prof. J. Gerlo), handeling en procesbekwaamheid van minderjarigen en geesteszieken, co-ouderschap en omgangsrecht (Prof. A. Wylleman), vereffeningsverdeling van wettelijke en bedongen huwelijksvermogensstelsels (Prof. J. Gerlo en Lic. A. Wylleman). In het erfrecht worden de erfrechtelijke reserve behandeld (Prof. C. De Wulf) en de bedingen over niet opengevallen nalatenschappen, de planning van nalatenschappen van ouders met een gehandicapt kind, de gift van hand tot hand (Lic. J. Bael). Notarieel recht - Zakenrecht In het zakenrecht, het zekerheidsrecht en het notarieel recht wordt vooral aandacht besteed aan onroerende zekerheden en publiciteit, privaatrechtelijk procesrecht in verband met het notariaat en notariële deontologie (Prof. C. Engels), roerende zekerheden en faillissements- en zekerheidsrecht (Praktijklector C. Van Heuverswyn). Rechtsvergelijking In de rechtsvergelijking wordt de hercodificatie van het burgerlijk recht in de landen van de civil law bestudeerd (Prof. W. De Bondt). Verbintenissenrecht In het verbintenissenrecht wordt onderzoek verricht over het hedendaags contractenrecht in het bijzonder over de rechtsfiguur "interpretatie" en de werking van de goede trouw (Prof. W. De Bondt), de invloed van het gelijkheidsbeginsel op de buitencontractuele aansprakelijkheid (Prof. H. Bocken, Lic. I. Boone en Lic. I. Geers), de wisselwerking tussen de professionele zelfregulering en het aansprakelijkheidsrecht (Lic. B. Claessens), aansprakelijkheid van en voor hulppersonen en vertegenwoordigers en alternatieve vergoedingsmechanismen buiten het aansprakelijkheidsrecht en het klassieke verzekeringsrecht zoals schade- fondsen (Prof. H. Cnudde) Vakgroep Bewegings- en sportwetenschappen De Vakgroep Bewegings- en Sportwetenschappen behoort tot de faculteit Geneeskunde en Gezondheidswetenschappen van de. De vakgroep vervult drie functies: onderwijs, onderzoek en dienstverlening. Het onderwijs is vooral geconcentreerd in de opleiding tot Bachelor (3jaar) en Master (1 jaar) in de Lichamelijke Opvoeding en Bewegingswetenschappen. Er zijn 3 afstudeerrichtingen: Sporttraining, Sportmanagement, Fitheid en gezondheid. De basisopleiding geeft samen met de afstudeerrichting(en) accreditering naar diverse niveaus in sporttraining (VTS: van initiator tot trainer A), in fitness, in sportmanagement. De opleiding telt een 500-tal studenten. Aanvullend is er ook de academische initiële lerarenopleiding en een aantal master-na-masters en postacademische vormingen. Vakgroep Beleidsinformatica en Operationeel beheer The department of Management Information, Operations Management and Technology Policy is part of the seven departments which are effective within the Economy and Business Management Faculty of the University of Ghent. This department?s field of research is very extensive. The latter was founded in 1958 by P.-H. Virenque and subsequently directed by E. Van Broekhoven, W. Nonneman, G. Blauwens, G. Carrin, A. Verbruggen, B. De Borger, H. Meersman and J. Plasmans. At present, the latter person is head of the department of economics. //..The department focuses on both fundamental and applied economic research in policy-relevant areas. Fundamental research is supported if it contributes to a better understanding of important social and economic problems. The department's applied economic research aims to provide an objective and scientific input in policy discussions in various areas, including macroeconomic policies and issues of public finance, education, health

Research output is published in working papers and reports, and all department members are encouraged to publish their research results in national and international journals. The department is also actively organising conferences and seminars within the scope of its research activities. VAKGROEP ACCOUNTING EN FINANCIERING Members of the department undertake research projects in the domains of Accounting and Finance. Within accounting the following areas can be distinguished : financial accoun-ting, management accounting and management control, financial analysis, management information systems and auditing. The finance domain includes the area of corporate finance, financial markets, risk analysis and the banking and insurance industry. The topic of corporate governance has been included as well in our area. The above mentioned topics are studied in the context of profit organisations as well as in the context of not for profit organisations or governments. Further topics are studied in the context of large organisations and enterprises as well as in small and medium sized organisations and enterprises. Vakgroep Accountancy en Bedrijfsfinanciering Het onderzoek van de vakgroep kan in grote mate onderverdeeld worden in 2 grote blokken. Deelgebied Bedrijfsfinanciering: De onderzoeksgroep &apos;bedrijfsfinanciering&apos; van de vakgroep spitst zich op onderzoek gerelateerd aan de financiering van ondernemingen, alsook aan de analyse van de jaarrekeningen van ondernemingen. Veelal betreft het hier toegepast en geen fundamenteel onderzoek. UGENT VUB Alliance Research Group in Information Systems The main goal for the construction of this alliance research group is establishing an official research unit in which the current joint research activities can be maintained and extended. In this context two common research themes are distinguished: ontology-driven requirements engineering and business process integration. Ontology-driven requirements engineering: Over the years Prof. Poels and his team have gained expertise in the conceptual modeling subfield of requirements engineering (e.g., goal modeling, business process modeling, domain-specific modeling). By combining this knowledge with the ontology and ontology engineering knowledge of the VUB team, we plan to investigate in detail the role of ontologies in the requirements engineering process. More specific we plan to develop methods which facilitate the use of ontologies in order to improve the reuse of domain knowledge during the modeling process and consequently improve the quality of the developed models. The proposed methods, modeling languages and models will be evaluated empirically using both business cases and experiments. The creation of this alliance research group must make it easier to find appropriate businesses cases using the Solvay business school network. The research alliance can also further extend the group of possible participants for the experiments. Having groups of students at two universities makes it possible to increase the frequency of conducting experiments and also use one of the groups as a pre-test for the design of an experiment. Business process integration: Nowadays enterprises act in a very volatile environment where they need to be able to integrate their business processes with their partners very quickly. In this research topic we investigate how this business process integration is managed using two different approaches. On the one hand a pragmatic approach is followed which looks at how integration of information systems actually occurs using process mining techniques that integrate the logs of the information systems of two different businesses. On the other hand this research topic also investigates how shared business ontologies can be used for integrating business processes. The two research groups are also connected by the type of Information Systems (IS) research that is conducted at both entities. More specific both groups focus on design science research which emphasizes a construction-oriented view of IS research centered around designing and building innovative IT artifacts which make both theoretical contributions and assist in solving the current and anticipated problems of practitioners. We believe that the experience with former design science projects at both universities, is essential for the development and evaluation of the new IT artifacts intended by the identified common research themes. Trefpunt Zelfhulp The Clearinghouse on self-help is a government funded supportcentre for self-help and mutual aid, based at the SociologicalResearch Department of the. For 20 years, it hascombined practical support and advice for established and newgroups, promotion for self-help (publications, talks andpresentations aimed at larger groups), policy development andresearch into self-help, networking and education/training.its management board consists of academics, with an advisoryboard made up of self-help participants, policy makers andexperts from various disciplines.once every two years, the Clearinghouse organises a surveyto collect a statistical description of the different Flemishself-help groups. How old are the different groups? How manymembers do they have? How are their target groups? Whichobjectives do they pursue? These are some of the questionsthe study attempts to answer. Toegepaste economie "toegepast" economisch onderzoek Tempus Omnia Revelat " Tempus Omnia Relevat, onderzoeks-eenheid voor de studie van tijd, cultuur en samenleving, werd opgericht in 1982 door enkele onderzoekers van het Centrum voor Sociologie van de, als een reactie op veranderingen in de temporele organisatie van de samenleving. Studiecentrum voor Ondernemerschap KUBrussel/Ehsal Hogeschool-Universiteit Brussel Het KMO-Studiecentrum focust zich op toegepast onderzoek betreffende kleine en middelgrote ondernemingen in Belgie. Studieadvies Strategie en Organisatie Universiteit Hasselt Expertise van het onderzoeksteam: Ons onderzoek richt zich op open innovatiestrategieën van organisaties. In het verleden was het onderzoek toegespitst op technologische alliantienetwerken en hun effect op de technologische performantie en winstgevendheid van bedrijven. Gedurende de laatste jaren is het onderzoek verbreed als gevolg van nieuwe trends in het innovatie- en ondernemerschapsonderzoek. De juridische aspecten van de organisatie en het beheer van de lokale autoriteiten." Sportpedagogiek en Training SPET currently develops research on: 1. The influence of extrinsic video feedback on the motor learning process during the performance of basic gymnastic skills. During the learning of skills we note that certain parts of a movement are performed out of our visual range. In these situations the athlete will only obtain an image of the movement by comparing with performances of others. During the motor learning process, this phenomenon frequently leads to an incorrect association between the image of the movement and the experienced kinesthesis (= awareness of muscle movement). Our goal is to evaluate if immediate video feedback during the performance of the movement -athlete obtains full visual control- will have a positive outcome on the motor learning process. 2. Computer Assisted Scouting and Match/game Analysis System (CASMAS). The observation of motor behaviour in different sports has been the aim of our research since over a decade. The used methodology can be applied in many domains. Teachers, coaches, trainers, doctors and physiotherapists are acquiring during their curriculum a specific observation method, known as Notational Analysis. Several aspects of the game have been explored using the CASMAS system, a scouting system developed in the last decade. Many analyses have been made at the level of the individual athlete as well as the team. The future development of CASMAS and its application in different sports inserts in the development of a scientific basis for the training and coaching aspects of the sports world. Player profiles, performance parameters and game efficiency are part of the daily scientific work upon the motor behaviour of the sports athletes. 3. The influence of different feedback systems on the acquisition of gymnastic skills. 4. The time of information processing of visual stimuli by P300 visual technic (in coop. with Univ. of Porto).

13 5. Research on different sport specific characteristics during the performance of gymnastic skills. The performance of several gymnastic skills are associated with the trainingmethodology, fysiological and morfological aspects by means of field tests. Sport- & Bewegingsbeleid In the Department of Sport and Movement Sciences researchprojects are focused around the biocultural approach of men inmovement and the movements of men. In recent years this area ofresearch is identified with the term kinesiology. Three researchunits are operational and deal with: physical education and sportpsychology, sociocultural kinesiology and differentialdevelopmental kinesiology. Below we mention some of the ongoing projects. In the area of Strategic Management and Organization, research focuses on strategic failure processes, strategic investments, market dynamics, competitive strategies, organizational performance and survival, and the effectiveness of co-operation between headquarters and subsidiaries. Another line of research in the field of Organization and Management involves empirical studies analysing the relation between characteristics (e.g., personality) of central agents in the organization (e.g., top managers) and the functioning and performance of organizations. With respect to innovation management, research projects examine the barriers to strategic innovation in industries, and new developments in service innovation. Sociologie " Onderzoek van de afdeling Sociologie kan worden toegeschreven aan de activiteiten van de onderzoeks-eenheid Tempus Omnia Revelat. Het oderzoek richt zich dus op de studie van tijd, cultuur en maatschappij. Het groepeert de onderzoeksactiviteiten van Prof Elchardus en Prof Glorieux. Sociale Veiligheidsanalyse De interuniversitaire onderzoeksgroep Sociale VeiligheidsAnalyse [SVA] is een samenwerkingsverband tussen de criminologen Prof. Dr. Paul Ponsaers en Prof. Dr. Els Enhus. Deze onderzoeksgroep maakt enerzijds deel uit van de Vakgroep Strafrecht en Criminologie () en de Vakgroep Criminologie (). SVA concentreert zich op criminologisch onderzoek naar 'sociale veiligheid'. Sociaal verwijst enerzijds naar de selectie- en afhandelingsstrategieen gehanteerd door de actoren in de strafrechtsbedeling en in andere gebieden betrokken bij het criminaliteitsvraagstuk. De rol van zowel discours als praktijk in deze strategieen vormen hierbij belangrijke aandachtspunten. Anderzijds wordt ingezoemd op de ervaringen, visies en beleving van de burgers en gebruikers mbt. de selectie- en afhandeling. Meer algemeen gesteld wordt vooral aandacht besteed aan het herverdelingsvraagstuk inzake veiligheid in onze samenleving. Het veiligheidsprobleem is immers niet gelijk voor iedereen; de ongelijke verdeling van macht, inkomen, sociaal en cultureel kapitaal ondermijnt de garanties van de rechtstaat op gelijke rechten. De maatschappelijke ongelijkheid wordt maw. binnen de sfeer van veiligheid gereproduceerd. Sociale Gerontologie Het doel van deze onderzoeksgroep is om onderzoekers in het domein van de sociale en beleidsmatige gerontologie samen te brengen. Sociale en Culturele Psychologie Sociale Concurrentie en Recht Het Onderzoeksprogramma Sociale Concurrentie en Recht focust op wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar arbeids- en sociale verhoudingen. Door die verhoudingen vanuit de optiek van de sociale concurrentie en recht te benaderen, kunnen fenomenen van de sociale uitbuiting en uitsluiting op een coherente wijze gevat worden in hun complexe, interactieve en grensoverschrijdende dimensie. Het onderzoeksprogramma wil op die manier een bijdrage leveren aan de zoektocht naar innovatieve en betere analyses van de functie, de inhoud en de toepassing van het sociaal recht.

Sociaal recht : sociaal zekerheidsrecht The social law unit is a research and education unit of the department of law. Within the broad domain of labour and social security law, the member of the social law unit are responsible for education at the UIA, UFSIA (IPO among others) and RUCA. They lecture at the Faculties of Law, Social and Political Sciences, Medicine, Economic Science and Arts. The unit is actively involved in various training courses with other disciplines such as Insurance Medicine and Occupational Medicine, Safety Sciences, Ergonomics and Social-Economic policy (VOSEB). The research domains which resulted in the publication of doctoral theses and reports were related mainly to the assessment of human damage, prevention and social security; the status of public servants, the laws pertaining to collective labour disputes; the laws governing dismissal; the authority of the employer; the status of personnel in local authorities (in cooperation with the Institute Administration-University) and international and European social law. Over the few past years our team has focused mainly on incapacity for work, prevention and occupational safety, the European regulations on social security, the status of medical personnel, the non-take up of social security benefits,... Current research focuses on the following items within the domain of labour law : the law on Collective agreements, equal treatment for men and women; labour regulations and guarenteed employment. The social law unit is also driving force within the Association of Labour Law (VVA). This cooperative structure of magistrates, bar and university has initiated various study and training course. The social law unit also has an international cooperative relation with the European Institute of the University of Utrecht. Other international contacts in educational and research projects with various Dutch universities, among others within the framework of Comett. In addition, the unit's members are actively involved in the framework of other European academic activities, especially within the framework of Erasmus and Tempus. The unit cooperates with the faculty of medicine within the framework of the Information Centre of Human Damage (ICMS) and with the officially recognized unions within the framework of the cooperative Institute and the Labor Movement (ISUA). Het onderzoek van het instituut weerspiegelt zowel de economische alsook de sociale en ethische uitdagingen die gekoppeld zijn aan diversiteit. Het situeert zich specifiek binnen drie domeinen: (1) Diversiteit, gelijkheid en inclusie in arbeid en organisaties, (2) Diversiteit, gelijkheid en inclusie in het onderwijs, en (3) Diversiteit, gelijkheid en inclusie in de Vlaamse maatschappij. School Onderwijs Stad & Samenleving (SOS & S) Onderzoek naar de relatie tussen maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen en onderwijskundig leiderschap in functie van het verhogen van de onderwijskwaliteit. School en Politiek (SeP) Het onderzoeksteam richt zich op het raakvlak tussen onderwijs en beleid. Dit behelst zowel beleidsrelevant onderzoek, als theoretisch onderzoek naar de invloed van scholen op burgerschapsopvattingen en politieke kennis. Het beleidsrelevant onderzoek richt zich in eerste instantie naar gelijke onderwijskansen in het Vlaams onderwijs, de financiering van het onderwijs, de sociografie van de leraren in Vlaanderen. Daarnaast heeft de onderzoeksgroep expertise opgebouwd inzake het gebruik van administratieve gegevensbestand om populatiegegevens omtrent het opleidingsniveau van de bevolking in kaart te brengen. Het fundamenteel onderzoek richt zich naar de invloed van scholen en leraren op de vorming van politieke houdingen en politieke kennis bij adolescenten (politieke socialisatie).

15 Rectoraat support to general educational and scientific research Recht Wetenschap Technologie en Samenleving Dit is het objective van LSTS Rechtsontwikkeling - Rechtsvergelijking - Europees Recht The department is a consortium of three major research inputs: 1. The interaction of Law and Technology, with the emphasis upon law and information systems. Projects cover the areas of privacy protection. Internet and liability, electronic surveillance techniques and security law on information systems. The Schengen and Europol data protection aspects are also studied. 2. The confrontation between law, sciences and social development. One project aims at the further theoretical investigation of the relationship between law and sciences. What can be the effect of technical and scientific developments and truth-claims upon the law at the age of scientific uncertainty and in the light of the findings of the new epistemology and sociology of sciences. Equally under investigation is the role of the law in managing social diversity (a diversity of values, views, cultures, ethical/religious convictions, interests,...) in contemporary societies. It will try to describe the occurring tensions and conflicts against the background of Occidental legal and political thinking concerning human rights (more specifically rights of collectivities and woman rights). Finally, this sub-group studies legal and institutional remedies for sustainable mobility in urban and suburban environments. 3. The European law group is involved in general research on the following topics: the state aid policy of the European Community; judicial protection and judicial enforcement in the European Union; and the acquis communautaire. One research project concerns the relations between the EU and the Middle- East. Another research project involves the differentiation in the legal order of the EU. Rechtshandhaving Het Onderzoeksprogramma "Rechtshandhaving en Behoorlijke Rechtsbedeling" beoogt, zowel voor het privaatrecht als voor het straf(proces)recht, na te gaan welke sancties mogen en kunnen worden aangewend, onder welke voorwaarden dit mogelijk is en welke van deze sancties het meest geschikt zijn voor een doeltreffende rechtshandhaving van privaatrechtelijke en strafrechtelijke normen. Voorts is het de bedoeling na te gaan op welke wijze er meer coherentie kan worden gebracht in de strafrechtsbedeling. RECHT EN WIJSBEGEERTE Hogeschool-Universiteit Brussel Recht en Filosofie. Recht en Ontwikkeling Het Onderzoeksprogramma Recht en Ontwikkeling wil de op de kaart zetten als een plaats waar uitstekend juridisch onderzoek wordt verricht op thema's die vanuit ontwikkelingsperspectief relevant zijn. De bijzondere belangstelling van het onderzoeksprogramma gaat uit naar het versterken van de rechten en de rechtspositie van kwetsbare groepen in de ontwikkelingslanden, tegen de achtergrond van de voortschrijdende economische globalisering. Publiek recht : staatsrecht The public law group does research on different aspects of constitutional, administrative and environmental law, in Belgium and in an international comparative perspective, and about human rights. Special attention is given to aspects of action (courts, administration and legislator), the European treaties (human rights and ECC) and disciplinary rules. The research for doctorate-theses concerns the characteristics of the administrative and jurisdictional acts, their application to adjudication by administrative agencies and their consequences for the due process of law; legal certainty and principles of due legislation, and the concept of human rights in the perspectives of the European Court of Human rights and of the European Court of Justice. The penal law group does research on different aspects of penal law and criminal procedure, with special attention for the revision of the criminal proceedings-law and international penal law. Research for doctorate-theses concerns the pre-trial stage in criminal proceedings and the function of the investigating magistrate and the international cooperation against money-laundring. Publiek Recht - Overheid - Electronisch Managment "Deze onderzoeksgroep heeft als belangrijkste aandachtspunt de publieke sector in het algemeen, en de verschillende mogelijke perspectieven van de studie van dit onderwerp: van een managments oog, uit het ICT-perspectief, e-overheid, lokale overheden... POLITIEKE WETENSCHAP (MS) Hogeschool-Universiteit Brussel Politieke Wetenschappen POLITIEKE WETENSCHAP Hogeschool-Universiteit Brussel Politieke Wetenschappen Politieke economie van de Grote Meren Regio De "Politieke economie van de Grote Meren Regio (Afrika)" refereert naar "de verdeling van inkomen, rijkdom en macht over verschillende groepen in de maatschappij". Deze themagroep tracht deze intellectuele traditie toe te passen op de ontwikkelingen in Sub-Sahara Afrika en meer specifiek de Grote Meren Regio. Ze laat toe om transformatie processen te bestuderen op verschillende schaal, van de lokale naar de regionale naar de globale ontwikkelingen. Aangezien de landen in de Grote Meren Regio zich in verschillende fasen van conflict en heropbouw bevinden, kan de onderzoeksagenda van de themagroep worden samengevat onder de titel: "van conflict naar inclusieve ontwikkeling". Political Representation in Diverse Societies Political representation is a crucial concept in political science. In essence, representation entails something or someone (the agent) standing for an absent thing or person (the principal). Political representation thus places an intermediary (agent) between citizens (principals) and political decision-making. These agents are called representatives. The fact that every society contains different interests and nodes that want to be represented at the government level is clearly part of all democratic processes. Political parties and their parliamentarians and ministers stand for different perspectives on society, and citizens vote for the party or person that best represents their vision. This representation of classic groups and group interests is a familiar notion: liberal parties traditionally appeal more to the liberal professions and the self-employed; socialist parties speak to the working classes; and regional parties address issues that concern specific ethnically, linguistically, or geographically identifiable groups. The political representation of societal groups that have surfaced more recently is a great deal more problematic. This concerns groups that are distinguished on the basis of gender, age, ethic/cultural background, or sexual orientation. Classic fault lines such as class or education also rear their heads in this regard. Different studies show that these groups are often insufficiently represented in political structures. This political underrepresentation of socially disadvantaged groups is now more and more seen as a societal and political problem undermining the representativeness of political institutions and, by implication, the democratic integrity of the decision-making process. The underrepresentation of societal groups and the lack of representativeness of the political decision-making process can however manifest in different ways. The literature points to the (im)possibility of participating in elections, the physical absence/presence in representative institutions, and the (lack of) substantive representation of certain groups' interests as possible manifestations. These manifestations concern, respectively, the formal, descriptive, and

17 substantive dimensions of representation as a concept. There has not yet been much research into the political representation of societal groups in Belgium, and the studies that do exist have often been the work of one or a handful of researchers. In the last few years, however, several researchers have started to engage with these matters (or elements thereof). By joining the forces of different researchers in this developing research domain we hope to further build on the scientific research in this field and on the expertise these two partners have accumulated. This would then also solidify and further develop the leading role of both partners in this research domain. By joining their potential, the concerned partners aim to realize three matters in their research: First, to continue, structurally secure, and, where possible, advance the existing collaboration between their two research groups. Researchers from both partner institutions will, where possible and when opportune, work jointly on journal articles, conference papers, and book chapters. (Further) co-advisorship of PhDs and joint memberships to supervisory research committees will also be sought where possible. Second, the partners wish use their alliance to initiate new joint research into the political representation of social groups. Joint research proposals will address the following well-known sources of funding: the specific research funds of both their institutions, the Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO), the research projects of the Belgian Federal Science Policy Office, as well as ad hoc sources of policy-related funding. We here envisage research that is more theoretical in nature, but also empirical research in Belgium and, as much as possible, research that takes up an international-comparative perspective. The researchers concerned already have access to existing scientific networks and wish to further develop these to use them for research purposes (e.g. ECPR Standing Groups on Gender & Politics, Committee on Political Sociology of International Political Science Association, ECPR Standing Group on Political Parties). Third, to realize these research objectives, investments will have to be made to further familiarize the two research groups with each other's expertise. Meetings and discussions will make the partners more familiar with each other's research domains and current research projects. The mutual consultation through these meetings and brainstorm sessions will also result in working out a joint research agenda and concrete initiatives in terms of project proposals. Possible connections to the international research agenda will here too, as noted above, be an important criterion. The main research themes for this joint research about the representation of social groups are rooted in the three dimensions of representation: - Formal dimension: this, among other matters, concerns the election regulations and techniques that are used to determine citizens' preferences and to convert those to the appointing of representatives. Relevant themes include the discussion about active and passive voting rights for certain social groups, the extent to which these voting rights are exercised, and the extent to which political parties push forward candidates from these social groups so that voters can express their thoughts on this. - Descriptive dimension: this takes a closer look at who the representatives are, what their characteristics are, and to what extent they/these mirror the population composition. Research themes here include mapping out underrepresentation, studying the roles of parties and voters in the underrepresentation of certain groups in parliament, and examining the desirability and effects of introducing quota. - Substantive dimension: This concerns the way the interests of social groups are represented in terms of content. The study of this dimension was long limited to analyses of the ways parliamentarians take up their mandate in terms of content and of the actions representatives take to look after the interests of the people they represent. Recent developments in the literature, however, argue for a broadening of this approach. On the one hand, scholars are suggesting studies look beyond the parliamentary arena and include other actors that take part in substantive representation - this would mean including civil society organisations, civil servants, and the media. On the other hand, some scholars defend the argument that representation need not always be a one-way process that runs from the voter to the representative; representatives can also themselves define interests and constituents that they wish to represent. Research around this dimension quite logically explores both these fields not just by mapping out to what extent (other) actors engage in representation, what the effects of this are, and which factors influence this, but also by studying which new groups are addressed by representatives, how this is done, what effects this has, and how people in these groups deal with this 'reverse' act of representation. Persoonlijkheidsstoornissen Onderzoek naar persoonlijkheidsstoornissen bij volwassenen en ouderen vanuit dimensionale benaderingen Persoonlijkheids- en Sociale Psychologie "Sommige standaard persoonlijkheidsvragenlijsten (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory - 2, Baron Emotional Quotient Inventory, Klinische miljoen Multiaxional Inventarisatie) zijn vertaald naar het Nederlands en onderzoek is verricht met het oog op de bouw van lokale normen en het valideren van de verschillende vragenlijsten in verschillende klinische settings en met verschillende groepen van patienten. Tegelijkertijd worden nieuwe schalen geconstrueerd voor het meten van persoonlijkheidsstoornissen (DSM-IV taxonomie) en zijn we op zoek naar 'type' vanverschillende vormen van psychopathologie (alcoholici, pedofilie, Recidivists, enz.). Overzicht van de belangrijkste onderzoeksthema's van PESP: 1. Normen en validatie van persoonlijkheid of psychopathologie vragenlijsten; 2. Structuur van persoonlijkheidsstoornissen; 3. Attribution Theory / Connectionist models." Persoon en vermogen De missie van het onderzoeksprogramma Burger en Recht is, op grond van een wederzijdse maatschappelijke verankering, private rechtsverhoudingen rechtsvergelijkend, interdisciplinair en intradisciplinair te onderzoeken. Private rechtsverhoudingen zijn onderhevig aan snelle maatschappelijke evoluties. Die evoluties hebben een weerslag op de wijze waarop de overheid private rechtsverhoudingen dient te reguleren. In het onderzoeksprogramma Burger en Recht worden private rechtsverhoudingen daartoe onderzocht. In verschillende onderzoekslijnen worden de actuele rechtsvragen uitgediept. Deze betreffen private rechtsverhoudingen waarbinnen een onevenwicht (in kennis, kapitaal,...) bestaat, familiale verhoudingen en private rechtsverhoudingen in kunst en cultuur. Pediatrie " PEDI behandelt de meeste actuele klinische onderzoeksonderwerpen in de kindergeneeskunde. Het personeel van de afdeling omvat kinderartsen, neurologen pediatrische, pediatrische psychiaters, enz. Klinisch onderzoek wordt verricht in alle pediatrische subspecialiteiten. Belangrijkste onderwerpen zijn: intensive care bij het oudere kind; hoge frequentie ventilatie, oscillerende ventilatie, metabole ziekten, adolescent geneeskunde, psychosomatische aandoeningen, bronchoscopie, cystic fibrosis, gastro-oesofageale reflux, voedselallergie, endoscopie, diabetes, enz." 18 The area of scientific research realised by the Department of Educational Sciences is situated in the large field of education and training. The research activities range from theory building to the investigation of educational practice and from local management and implementation strategies of education policies to the study of educational systems for international comparison. Current or recently finished research topics are more specifically located in the following content areas: For the unit of "General Education": 1. Educational policy and equity; 2. Information and communication technology in education (classroom level, school level, policy level); 3. Implementation of metacognitive strategies in schools and classes; 4. Development of quality indicators at system level (classroom processes and school functioning); 5. Evaluation of "lifelong learning" - initiatives from the European Union. For the Unit of "Special Education": 1. Depression at children's age; 2. Psychological and social guidance of cancer patients; 3. Conflict handling in residential settings; 4. Functioning of special school for children mentally retarded. Joint research activities: 1. Inclusive education in Flanders; constraints and implementation strategies; 2. Effectiveness of training modules in inclusive education at teacher training level. The different units of the department participate in international research and development programmes in the same content areas. Pedagogie en Didactiek in de Wetenschappen The research unit DIWE is mainly developing research on the education of ß-sciences during the candidate years at universities and other institutes of higher education, but also has research interests in the final years (3rd degree) of secondary education. Most research activities are oriented towards the learning process of the student and the development or activation of capabilities stimulating self-learning, in-depth analysis and knowledge development during the study of sciences. This research led, among other things, to an analysis of the learning process and awareness of a more adequate learning process through the testing of foreknowledge, learning method inquiries and interviews. Within the subject-specific interactive working groups (IWG), which are product of this research, the necessary capabilities can be acquired through a process-oriented approach. This research has already resulted in a number of different side-products, as the continuous education of teachers in secondary education. Since 1997 an important part of research has been oriented towards problem-focused education. A fine example is the development of an electronic workbook in which the student himself can acquire and process his knowledge (especially in the area of physics) according to a specific study trajectory. In many developing countries tourism is the major driving force behind economic growth and social improvement, thanks to its labour-intensive nature and the substantial side-effects it generates on other economic activities. OSTO intends to study the conditions for a harmonious advancement of the economic, cultural and ecological outcome of tourism development. Its composition is therefore, evidently, of a multidisciplinary and interfaculty nature to cover the multiple aspects of the tourism phenomenon. In our approach we investigate these topics at 3 different production phases: at the input we concentrate on access and specificity of the target group and their problems; we look at the process step in terms of division of labour, the allocation of capacity and use treatment forms as well as the form of the relationship with clients; at the outcome level we investigate the changes in the state of the client as well as his satisfaction. We studied specific types of services (e.g. ambulatory mental health centres) but also the relationship between types of services as well as the policy related to one of these service types. //..B. We were able tot develop instruments and models e.g. on the workload management of general personal social services; on the cohesion and collaboration of different types of services; on the determinants of demand and use of services for dependent elderly; on the effects of the use of services for the well-being of elderly; on the introduction of personal care budgets for persons with physical handicaps. //..C. De onderzoeksgroep focust hierbij op verschillende deelaspecten (productie, representatie en receptie) van uiteenlopende media (film, televisie, internet, fotografie, etc.) en culturele fenomenen, via een uitgebreid arsenaal aan (innovatieve) methoden (tekstuele analyse, publieksonderzoek, productioneel onderzoek, visuele etnografie, systematische observatie, arts-based methodieken, etc).
