3 SYNOPSIS Woody Allen speelt Murray, een boekhandelaar met nijpende geldproblemen. Maar wanneer zijn aantrekkelijke dermatologe (Sharon Stone) hem vraagt of hij niet een leuke man weet, dient zich een onverwachte oplossing aan. Hij weet zijn vriend Fioravante (John Turturro) over te halen om zich als gigolo te verkopen, waarbij Murray uiteraard een percentage opstrijkt. Niet echt een straf, vooral niet met klanten als de wulpse Selima (Sofia Vergara). Maar dan wordt de kersverse gigolo verliefd. En de charmante orthodox-joodse weduwe Avigal (Vanessa Paradis) heeft geen idee van Fioravante's beroep. 3

7 OVER JOHN TURTURRO JOHN TURTURRO Regisseur / Schrijver / Acteur (Fioravante) John Turturro is in de afgelopen vijftien jaar gestaag uitgegroeid tot een van de meest bekende karakteracteurs van de Amerikaanse cinema. Ook zijn status als regisseur en scenarioschrijver groeit in bekendheid. Turturro volgt een opleiding aan de Yale School of Drama. Na zijn afstuderen maakt hij in 1983 zijn theaterdebuut met de hoofdrol in Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, een rol die bekroond wordt met zowel een Obie Award als een Theater World Award. Inmiddels is hij ook voorzichtig aan een carrière op het witte doek begonnen, met onder meer een piepklein rolletje in Raging Bull (1980). Er volgen in de jaren daarop nog verschillende kleine rollen in films als To Live and Die in L.A. (1985), Woody Allens Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) en The Color of Money (1986) van Martin Scorsese. In 1987 valt Turturro pas echt op met een aanzienlijke rol in ensemblefilm Five Corners, waarvoor hij genomineerd wordt voor de Independent Spirit Award voor beste bijrol. Ook aanstormend regietalent Spike Lee is onder de indruk en cast Turturro in Do the Right Thing (1989). Er volgt een lange samenwerking tussen Lee en Turturro, resulterend in films als Mo Better Blues (1990), Jungle Fever (1991) en Clockers (1995). Ook met regisseurs Joel en Ethan Coen heeft John Turturro een langlopende relatie. In 1990 maakt hij zijn opwachting in hun gangsterfilm Miller s Crossing en het jaar daarop speelt hij de hoofdrol in de Coens zwarte komedie Barton Fink, waarvoor hij voor verschillende acteursprijzen wordt genomineerd. 7

8 In 1992 maakt John Turturro zijn debuut als regisseur en scenarioschrijver met Mac, een lichtvoetig familiedrama waarin hij, zijn broer Nicholas Turturro en zijn vrouw Katherine Borowitz de hoofdrollen spelen. De film wordt genomineerd voor twee Independent Spirit Awards, voor beste regisseur en beste debuut. Op het filmfestival van Cannes wint Mac de Camera d Or, de prijs voor beste debuutfilm. Volgt in 1998 Illuminata, een film die Turturro regisseert, produceert en schrijft (samen met Brandon Cole). Ook maakt hij deel uit van de cast, net als echtgenote Katherine Borowitz. De film wordt geselecteerd voor de competitie van het filmfestival van Cannes. In 2005 regisseert Turturro Romance and Cigarettes, een internationale arthousehit die tijdens het filmfestival van Venetië genomineerd wordt voor een Gouden Leeuw. En in 2010 voegt hij nog een muziekdocumentaire (Passione) aan zijn oeuvre als regisseur toe. John Turturro Ook als acteur gaat het Turturro voor de wind. Voor zijn hoofdrol in Quiz Show (1994) wordt hij voor verscheidende belangrijke acteerprijzen genomineerd. In 1998 volgen rollen in Rounders en The Big Lebowski, een film van de gebroeders Coen. Twee jaar daarop speelt hij een van de hoofdrollen in de nieuwste van de Coens, O Brother Where Art Thou?, en in 2003 is hij onder meer te zien in de zeer uiteenlopende films Fear X van Nicolas Winding Refn en komedie Anger Management met Jack Nicholson. Recent zien we hem terug in de drie Tranformers-films. Binnenkort is hij te zien in Ridley Scotts bijbelepos Exodus. In maart van dit jaar ontvangt John Turturro een oeuvreprijs tijdens het Miami International Film Festival. 8

10 OVER WOODY ALLEN WOODY ALLEN Acteur (Murray) Woody Allen is een ongekend populaire regisseur, scenarioschrijver en acteur. Zijn rol in Fading Gigolo is zijn eerste optreden in een film die hij niet geregisseerd heeft sinds Allen begon zijn carrière als broodschrijver en komiek in de jaren vijftig. In de jaren zestig maakte hij de overstap naar het witte doek, waar hij als acteur, scenarist en regisseur aan de bak kon. Inmiddels heeft Allen, die een film per jaar draait, meer dan 40 films op zijn naam als regisseur staan. Voor Annie Hall (1977) won Woody Allen zowel de Oscar voor beste film als die voor beste regie en beste scenario. De Oscar voor beste scenario won hij ook voor Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) en Midnight in Paris (2011). In zijn meer dan 50 jaar durende carrière ontving hij in totaal drie nominaties voor de Oscar voor beste film. Hij werd zeven keer genomineerd voor de Oscar voor beste regie en vijftien keer voor de Oscar voor beste scenario, recent nog voor zijn script voor Blue Jasmine (2013). Ook werd hij genomineerd voor beste acteur voor zijn rol in Annie Hall. 10

12 OVER FADING GIGOLO HOW IT ALL STARTED The idea for John Turturro s new comedy FADING GIGOLO first surfaced in a playful improvisation he did for a friend s amusement over lunch. I was just riffing, and then he kept laughing and I kept going more with it, says Turturro. It was only afterwards that he started to think this concept might be something worth exploring further. He talked about it to a few friends, including his barber. The barber mentioned it to another of his customers who happened to be Woody Allen. Allen loved the idea so much he, in turn, reached out to John. At this point Turturro didn t have much more than the basic story. I went over to Woody s place and I talked him through it, says Turturro. He d say that s funny or that s not funny or that could be funny. As Allen remembers: I thought John had come up with an unusual and amusing notion; it had a group of entertaining characters, it had a little taste of romance to it, and there were moments of real human interest. When Turturro started to write the script, Allen agreed to continue offering feedback. He was very generous with his time, says Turturro, but he was also merciless, and if someone like Woody Allen takes the time to do that, I felt that there mustbe something there. Turturro adds: I think Woody encouraged me in his own way to go deep, and by the end there was a lot more of me in the movie. He encouraged me on how to do that in my own way. I wound up with much more of a nuanced film than a silly comedy. 12

13 WOODY FADING GIGOLO marks one of the rare occasions in which Woody Allen acts in a film by another director. I have great respect for John s work as a director and an actor, and I felt this was a role that was within my range, says Allen. If John had given me a script where I had to play a policeman or something, I wouldn t have been able to do it, because I m not really an actor, but this was something I could handle. Turturro and the rest of the cast do not share Allen s modesty about his talents. When you re acting opposite him, you see how fantastic he can be, says Turturro. He did some really delicate things. He liked to improvise and it was fun to try things a couple of different ways. He s a very underrated actor and he was always on time, ready to work. Says Allen: Knowing what it s like being a director myself, I tried to be as accommodating as humanly possible and do every single thing John wanted me to do, because I come from a director s point of view. I tried to completely abandon any directorial impulses of mine, or writer impulses or anything, and do as many takes as he wanted, and do them the way he wanted them, as this is strictly his baby. THE WOMEN Turturro has created several highly diverse portraits of women for FADING GIGOLO. As he explains: I wanted the women to be very different: small, big, black, white, Spanish; women that are evocative of different things. In an early draft I had much older women too. Turturro continues: I ve worked very closely with the women in the movies I ve directed. They interest me more. If I could make five movies in a row I would never make an all male movie. I don t even want to see an all male movie. Some of my favorite directors are Ingmar Bergman, Jean Renoir, Truffaut, and Louis Malle, because they created such vivid female characters. 13
