Onze toeterman van de vakantiecursus, de ambassadeur van het Opencourseware, onze Universitair Hoofddocent, de stille kracht achter onze sectie heeft besloten om na 16 jaar trouwe (en vooral inspirerende) dienst onze sectie te verlaten. Voor ons is dit natuurlijk goed balen, maar voor de strategieafdeling van Evides is dit een heugelijk feit. Wij gunnen Jasper (Verberk) deze overstap van harte en ik krijg van alle kanten ook hele positieve reacties (alle ten gunste van Jasper overigens). Jasper heeft veel voor onze sectie betekend. Toen hij begon bij de sectie was hij 1 van de 2 stafleden van de drinkwatergroep bij een, toen nog, deeltijdhoogleraar Prof Hans van Dijk. Het accent lag toen op onderwijs en in het topjaar studeerden 16! (Nederlandse) studenten af op drinkwater. Met het begeleiden van deze studenten en het ontwikkelen van het lesmateriaal had je je handen vol. Promoveren deed je niet, maar Jasper was een van de eersten die zijn zinnen daar wel op had gezet. Hij promoveerde op het spoelen van membranen met lucht, wat inmiddels toch wel redelijk ingeburgerd is. Daarna is hij zich in gaan zetten voor allerlei nieuwe onderzoeken en heeft vele subsidies en promotieplaatsen weten binnen te halen, zelfs een prestigieuze NWO/WOTRO. Voor studenten is Jasper een lichtend voorbeeld en een vast baken in de tumultueuze studie zee. Zit je vast en weet je niet meer hoe je verder moet.. vraag het Jasper. De leukste stages krijg je ook via Jasper. Hoeveel studenten zijn niet gezondheidstechniek gaan studeren omdat ze eerst door Jasper lekker gemaakt werden voor een plek op Curaçao, in Indonesië of Australië?? Jasper, we gaan je missen. Je laat wel een hele leuke groep achter, vol met enthousiaste MSc ers en PhD ers. Wij zullen jou als voorbeeld houden en in de teamgeest hooghouden. Daarnaast zullen we je altijd weten te vinden voor advies, samenwerking en een gezellig samen zijn. Dat er een hoop veranderd is in de afgelopen jaren mag duidelijk zijn. Nu studeren er meer buitenlanders af dan Nederlanders bijvoorbeeld. Afgelopen maand heeft de Chinese student Mingyang Li bijvoorbeeld met succes zijn studie afgerond. Tijdens zijn afstudeerpraatje was hij al in China, dus hebben we dit praatje gehouden via video conferencing, geheel in het licht de ontwikkelingen op IT gebied. Gelukkig zijn er ook nog wel gewone studenten. Thijs Padmos studeert binnenkort af op een heel Nederlands onderwerp: de afvalwatercalculator. In deze nieuwsbrief staan samenvattingen van de onderzoeken en een volledige versie van het rapport is bij ons op te vragen. Dat het goed gaat met onze studenten volgt uit de vele prijzen die zij in de wacht slepen. De TU Delft reikt jaarlijks (gesponsorde) prijzen uit ter stimulering van studenten van de gehele TU. Bij 3 (van de 7) prijzen waren studenten van onze sectie betrokken (en hebben die ook gewonnen): David Moed won de UfD-Strukton Masteraward, Sid Vollebregt en Reinoud Feenstra wonnen de UfD-Cofely Energy Efficiency prijs en Martijn Sparnaaij was een van de winnaars van de UfD-Imtech Bachelor grants. Daarnaast mag vermeld worden dat Doris van Halem door Delft Women in Science (DEWIS) was genomineerd voor de DEWIS excellency award. Verder in deze nieuwsbrief nog enkele aankondigingen voor symposia en workshops. Ze zijn van harte aan te bevelen! Neem de NWO-workshop georganiseerd met Chinese collega s van de Tongji Universiteit in Shanghai over organische microverontreinigingen, de KNW workshop het beste IT-idee of de mooiste IT-toepassing in de watersector en de Young water professionals workshop. 3 Afstudeer verslagen Towards a wastewater treatment calculator Thijs Padmos For my thesis I chose to investigate the investmentand exploitation costs of wastewater treatment plants. The goal of this thesis was to develop a tool called the wastewater treatment calculator, making cost estimation easier. The tool is intended to be used by Water boards in the Netherlands. Therefore I interviewed Water Boards about costs and their estimation methods. The results indicated that Water Boards use their own terminology for costs. This leads to differences in the estimation of costs of wastewater treatment plants. A crucial part of the research was to get my hands on sufficient and reliable data. The data came as specification forms of earlier realized building projects. The costs I needed were costs for civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and process automatization. However, while analysing the data, it appeared that not much data was found on costs for electrical engineering and process automatization. The civil engineering costs were validated with a cost calculation model used by DHV. Next step was to combine the data with the wastewater treatment calculator. I developed a basic structure for this tool, based on the calculator for drinking water treatment, developed by DHV in In the tool a wastewater treatment plant is considered as a set of connected blocks representing the different unit operations: anaerobic tank, anoxic tank, aeration tank, secondary sedimentation tank and return sludge pump. The following components were used for process operation inside the blocks: bubble aerators and appendices, surface aerators, mixers, cranes and sludge removal arm. 4 When using the tool, the first step is to select the mentioned blocks and components. This is done manually. The next step is to specify the blocks. Specification is done by filling in a value of for instance surface loading rate [m/h], contact time [h], recirculation rate [m3/h] etc. When these steps are done the tool will estimate the building costs of the plant. It appeared that estimations of separate blocks and components were less accurate than an estimation of the total costs of a plant. Next to building costs the exploitation costs of the aeration process were added to the wastewater treatment calculator. Water Boards are nowadays keen on saving energy. In some plants the aeration process uses roughly half of the total energy consumption. To evaluate options for energy saving, an estimation of exploitation costs for aeration is required. These costs are added to the wastewater treatment calculator in order to be able to evaluate the pay-back time an investment. In my report I recommend to further develop the wastewater treatment calculator. This tool makes it easy to estimate building costs and exploitation costs. The performed research however focused on conventional wastewater treatment plants. Future research should therefore focus on new and upcoming technologies. Then it becomes possible to quantify the costs and benefits of new technologies in relation to the conventional ones. t.w.padmos@student.tudelft.nl Ceramic microfiltration Introduction Mingyang Li Ceramic microfiltration is becoming popular during the last years. However, membrane fouling is still a challenge for the development of ceramic microfiltration. Conventional methods for membrane fouling control concentrates on two issues: pretreatment (such as pre-coagulation) and frequent backwash. Both methods show good fouling control in membrane filtration, but meanwhile, pre-coagulation results in high amounts of solid wastes and frequent backwash brings high energy use. As a result a new and more economic way is required for fouling control in membrane filtration systems. Research In this research pre-coagulation without floc formation and long filtration times (more than 10 hours) were applied, so that there was less solid waste and less energy consumption for backwash. In this circumstance, an artificial cake layer formed from the coagulated pin-flocs precipitated on the membrane surface, which protected the membrane to some extent. Since the cake layer formation is highly dependent on the coagulation conditions (ph and coagulant dosage), different ph (4, 6, 8) and coagulation dosages (8mg/L and 16mg/L) were tested. Under these circumstances, the coagulation mechanisms were in the so-called destabilization zone, the adsorption zone, and the sweep coagulation zone. The cake layer characteristics were measured separately in order to show the relation between the cake layer and the membrane performance. 4

6 Studenten projecten Getaway to the Land of Sunshine Shirin Malek Pour Everyday sunshine! A multi-cultural society with great openness towards other nations! Diverse tasty food from all over the world! A real city life in a 24-hour active and lively place!... Aren t these enough reasons to leave the cold and gloomy Europe in November for warm and jolly Melbourne? As a second year master student at the Sanitary Engineering section, I worked on a research project in Australia for my internship. The project was performed by and between the Goulburn Valley Water (a water and wastewater corporation in the Goulburn Valley, Victoria) and the School of Land and Environment in The University of Melbourne. The period of this internship was from November 2011 to January Goulburn Valley Water (GVW) manages 26 sewage treatment plants (STPs) in Victoria, Australia, with treated effluent from 25 of these being used to irrigate pasture in the immediate vicinity of the STPs. The potential exists, however, to grow higher-value crops such as vegetables in place of pasture. Furthermore, competition for conventional surface water in a water scarce country like Australia could make recycled water a more economically attractive option for many irrigators in the long-term. A research project was defined in this regard to assess the options of recycled water irrigation of different crops in the Goulbrun Valley in Victoria. My work specifically consisted of assessing the Noroviruses disease risks in overhead irrigation of iceberg lettuce with the effluent of the Shepparton Sewage Treatment Plant in Victoria, and to come up with the interventions that shall be implemented in the treatment plant to produce an effluent which is safe enough for irrigation of lettuce, according to the Australian Guidelines for Water Recycling. Under the supervision of Dr Gertjan Medema from the Sanitary Engineering section, and a super enthusiastic and supportive professor at The University of Melbourne, Dr Andrew Hamilton, I managed to sneak into the world of health risk assessments. It was not an unfamiliar topic by name, but very much unknown to me (and certainly many engineering students) in practice. The journey I began to decode this unknown for myself, created one of my most enjoyable experiences ever! I got the opportunity to work in one of the most reputable universities in the world on an interesting project. In a world where 80% of its population live in areas with threats to water security, reusing wastewater to grow food is definitely a hot topic for the present and the future. At the same time, I experienced a unique social life in an amazing country which is very much receptive towards other cultures. Observing a diverse society with people from all colors and races living together in Melbourne gives a true sense to the title of Cultural Capital of Australia for this fantastic city. 7 Afstuderen in Kenia Alida Adams Van november tot en met februari ben ik drieënhalve maand naar Kenia geweest om gegevens te verzamelen voor mijn afstudeeronderzoek. Dit onderzoek gaat over het beheer van watervoorzieningen op het platteland en dan in het bijzonder over het onderhoud en de financiën. Ik vergelijk verschillende manieren waarop dit beheer geregeld kan worden, respectievelijk door de overheid, door de lokale gemeenschap of particulier. Deze drie managementmodellen bekijk ik in combinatie met verschillende technologieën die gebruikt worden. Wat die technologieën betreft richt ik me op grondwaterputten die voorzien zijn van een handpomp of een gemotoriseerde pomp. In het geval van een gemotoriseerde pomp komen er hele andere vragen kijken bij het beheer dan bij een handpomp en mogelijk is hier ook een ander managementmodel geschikt. Maar hoe zag die tijd er nu uit in de praktijk? Ik doe mijn onderzoek in samenwerking met SNV Netherlands Development Organization. Zij hebben in Kenia een groep die zich bezig houdt met Water, Sanitation and Hygiene en zij werken veel samen met de Keniaanse overheid en ook met UNICEF. Mijn onderzoek vindt plaats in de twee meest westelijke provincies van Kenia. Mijn basis voor het veldwerk was daarom Kisumu, een kleine stad in het westen, waar SNV een kantoortje heeft in hetzelfde gebouw als de Water Services Board van één van de twee provincies. De Water Services Boards zijn onderdeel van het ministerie van Water en per gebied verantwoordelijk voor alles wat te maken heeft met de watervoorziening. Uiteindelijk heb ik vooral met deze Boards van beide provincies samengewerkt. Zij waren de link met de nog lokalere staf van water, namelijk de District Water Officers. Voor mijn onderzoek bezocht ik per district dus een aantal watervoorzieningen op het platteland. Dit ging altijd samen met iemand van de lokale District Water Office. Meestal per motor en soms per auto. Deze persoon had ik meestal ook nodig voor vertaling omdat de lokale mensen vaak geen Engels spraken. Per watervoorziening volgde een uitgebreid interview over het management van het onderhoud en de financiën. Erg interessant om te zien welke problemen en uitdagingen er op dat gebied spelen. Mensen die niet willen betalen voor hun water, een verantwoordelijk comité met allerlei interne ruzies, een penningmeester die al het verzamelde geld gebruikt voor privédoeleinden in plaats van voor het onderhoud van de waterpomp, de overheid die de verantwoordelijkheid voor watervoorzieningen over wil dragen aan anderen maar hier niet erg succesvol in is, technici die als één van de weinigen snappen hoe ze reparaties kunnen uitvoeren en die kennis vervolgens gebruiken om s nachts allerlei waardevolle onderdelen van de pompen te stelen, et cetera. Al met al heb ik aardig wat gegevens kunnen verzamelen, die ik nu hier in Nederland verder uit ga werken. En naast het verzamelen van gegevens was het ook erg leuk om veel mee te krijgen van het Keniaanse leven. Door bij een Keniaans gezin in huis te wonen, veel met Kenianen samen te werken, mee te eten in de dorpen en veel in het openbaar vervoer te zitten. Een leven wat enorm verschilt van Nederland, maar waar ik erg van heb genoten! a.adams@student.tudelft.nl 8

8 Biogas digester project in Kenya Ravina R. Binol Throughout my scholarly years in Indonesia and the Netherlands I had been immersing myself in the study of environmental engineering. I was exposed to various technologically advanced concepts and my professors showed me the importance of environmental sustainability in an ever changing globalized world. During my studies in Indonesia I had also taken on a traineeship at a textile industry. The value of an traineeship is derived from the fact that as a student I am finally able to put those accumulated theories into practice. In addition to that I feel that a traineeship is necessary to experience the working world. In search of the traineeship, I was fortunate enough to set my eyes on a traineeship vacancy posted on the advertisement board of the Dispuut Watermanagement. A student was called upon to perform the preliminary studies of a biogas digester construction in Namanga, Kenya. I wanted to work in a developing country other than my own; the thrill of the unknown combined with the opportunity to conduct Biogas implementation was the main driver for choosing a traineeship in Kenya, Africa. I simply wanted to make a difference. The traineeship was made available by an NGO from the Netherlands, Catharina Fonds, which supports the improvement of education and the community in Namanga, South of Kenya. I had never been to Africa so it was definitely an unfamiliar context but I was eager to experience something new and different. This traineeship differed from my last traineeship in Indonesia because I worked within an African community, hired by non-profit organization as opposed to working in an Indonesian textile factory, which is clearly profit oriented. In terms of my expectations, the traineeship required me to develop a blue print of a fully functioning biogas reactor. I had never developed a biogas reactor before so this was quite a considerable challenge. However, previous to my traineeship I had done a case study based in Aruba to design and build a wastewater treatment plant. I had achieved a relatively high grade for the case study hence I felt confident in terms of fulfilling the traineeship tasks. Whilst I was confident about my technical skills I was not prepared for the social, political and cultural aspects of Kenya, Africa. Unlike the case study, I was living amongst and confronted with the aforementioned contextual elements. The tasks were mostly hindered and postponed due to transport unavailability, inaccessible roads and my low experience in actual construction works. Nevertheless, after adapting to local conditions, By the end of the third month I was able to adopt to the culture of expecting the unexpected. As stated earlier I simply wanted to make a difference. I wanted to contribute my skills as an engineer to society at large. I have always had the innate desire to work in a developing country. Upon the completion of my Master s studies in TU Delft I had originally intended to work in a developing country and improve the living and sanitary conditions there. Being in Kenya has given me a whole new perspective on my future goals. The challenges involved with emerging nations are not issues that could not be tackled overnight. I realized that it takes a long process to make a difference. Although I was not able to create a better future for the world during my internship, I learnt many things that helped me redirect my own future. ravina.rukmina@gmail.com 9

9 Stage in Durban Marleen Heidekamp Toen Nederland in februari in de ban raakte van de Elfstedentocht, zat ik al ruim een maand in de zomer zon van Zuid-Afrika. De afgelopen 2,5 maand heb ik aan de Durban University of Technology een onderzoeksstage gedaan op het gebied van membraanfiltratie. De afdeling Chemical Engineering van de DUT specialiseert zich op het gebied van toepassing van membraan filtratie in drink en afvalwater zuivering. Een van hun projecten is de ontwikkeling van een point of use watertreatment unit. Dit is een zuiveringsunit die in landelijk Afrika toegepast kan worden om water te zuiveren zodat het veilig gedronken kan worden. De unit bestaat uit een opgerold plat membraan met een outlet aan de onderkant van een emmer van 25 liter. De emmer kan gevuld worden met water uit een lokale rivier of dam en zodra de kraan geopend wordt, begint onder vrij verval het zuiveringsproces. Het gezuiverde water is vrij van zwevende stof en meeste bacteriën. Een paar druppels chloor dienen aan het effluent te worden toegevoegd om na-besmetting te voorkomen. De doelstelling is dat per uur ongeveer 20 liter water gezuiverd kan worden. Tijdens mijn verblijf in Durban heb ik onderzoek gedaan naar de hydraulische aspecten van het systeem. Daarvoor heb ik mijn eigen membranen gemaakt die bestaan uit twee gelijke sheets met daartussen een spacer. Mijn onderzoek omvatte in het kort het ontwerp en evaluatie van een membraan configuratie met meerdere outlets in het membraan, op verschillende hoogten. Ik heb diverse experiment reeksen gedaan om de flow rate en effluent kwaliteit te evalueren. De belangrijkste bevindingen zijn dat de flow rate aanzienlijk verhoogd wordt door meerdere outlets te gebruiken zodat de eis van 20 liter per uur bijna gehaald wordt. Door het toevoegen van meerdere outlets wordt het systeem echter gevoeliger voor lekkages en andere discontinuïteiten. Naast het technische aspect is er ook een NGO bij het project betrokken om te helpen bij de implementatie en acceptatie van het systeem in landelijk Afrika. Tijdens mijn verblijf heb ik een workshopsessie bijgewoond om deze aspecten te bekijken. Naast verschillende sessies en discussies hebben we ook een bezoek gebracht aan het dorp waar het systeem getest gaat worden. Het was erg leerzaam en indrukwekkend om te zien hoe de watersituatie van deze mensen is. Dagelijks lopen ze kilometers om water te halen uit een klein (vervuild) stroompje. Het viel me op dat de kennis van de bewoners over sanitatie en drinkwater goed is. Mensen zijn erg bewust dat ze van vervuild water ziek kunnen worden en dat ze de waterbronnen moeten beschermen. Echter zijn de middelen beperkt en ze zijn daarom ook erg dankbaar en bereid om mee te werken met dit project. Natuurlijk is er ook tijd om naast het project Durban en de rest van het land te ontdekken. Durban is een stad waar de zon bijna elke dag schijnt en kent vele culturen. Zo is de Indische gemeenschap hier zeer groot, in ieder restaurant is dan ook wel een spicy curry te bestellen. Daarnaast is er natuurlijk het strand met de warme Indische oceaan en het voetbal stadion als eyecatcher van de skyline. Mijn verblijf in Durban zit er helaas bijna op, maar voordat ik het Nederlandse voorjaar op kom zoeken, ga ik eerst nog reizen door dit mooie land! 10

10 Prijzen UfD-Cofely Energy Efficiency Award Reinoud Feenstra & Sid Vollebregt Net als in voorgaande jaren riepen het Universiteitsfonds en Cofely masterstudenten aan de TU Delft op na te denken over innovatieve oplossingen voor een lager energieverbruik, CO2-reductie en het efficiënter benutten van duurzame energiebronnen. De drie beste ideeën werden geselecteerd en op 23 februari zou de presentatie van het idee de doorslag geven, met de aanvullende criteria van innovativiteit, maatschappelijke relevantie, toepasbaarheid en originaliteit. Met het door ons ontwikkelde Renewable Energy Sources aangedreven ontziltingsconcept, welke continu stationair in bedrijf is en geen gebruik maakt van batterijen, leken we een realistische kans te maken op deze prijs. We werden dan ook uitgenodigd om op 23 februari ons idee te komen presenteren. Na het omschrijven van de moeilijkheden die remote communities ondergaan om aan veilig drinkwater te komen, hebben we het concept gepresenteerd met de resultaten uit de testperiode in Indonesië. Tenslotte is de wereldwijde potentie van het systeem beschreven en werd het tijd voor de jury om in beraad te gaan. De jury onder voorzitterschap van Hans Hellendoorn, hoogleraar Climate Design & Sustainability aan de TU Delft, gaf vervolgens tot onze vreugde aan dat wij de eerste prijs van euro in ontvangst mochten nemen. Dit is niet alleen voor ons, maar ook voor al onze begeleiders en betrokkenen in Nederland en Indonesië een groot compliment en een bevestiging van de maatschappelijke waarde van het concept. Onze ambitie ligt ook bij doorontwikkeling van het concept, en daarbij is alle hulp natuurlijk welkom. Wij zijn hier erg blij mee en willen bij deze ook alle betrokken personen bedanken. 11

11 David Moed winnaar van de UfD- Strukton MasterAwards! Donderdagmiddag, 8 maart, heeft de uitreiking van de UfD-Strukton MasterAwards 2011 plaatsgevonden. In een eerder beraad heeft de jury uit de 14 inzendingen 3 kandidaten genomineeerd. Zij mochten deze middag hun ideeën en oplossingen voor het verbeteren van de leefomgeving presenteren aan de leden van de jury en het publiek. Na afloop van de presentaties heeft de jury zich teruggetrokken voor een laatste juryberaad. De jury selecteert de winnaar op basis van de volgende criteria: haalbaarheid, inlevend, initiatief, innovatie en CO2-reductie. De winnaar van de UfD-Strukton MasterAwards is David Moed. Hij bedacht een duurzame en goedkope oplossing voor de verwijdering van arseen uit grondwater en ontving voor dit idee een cheque ter waarde van euro. Arseen in drinkwater kan leiden tot huidlaesies, verschillende vormen van kanker en hart- en vaatziekten. In Bangladesh, waar miljoenen pompen de bevolking van water voorzien, zorgt de concentratie arseen in grondwater voor de grootste problemen. David Moed deed onderzoek naar Subsurface Arsenic Removal (SAR). Door water met zuurstof de grond in te pompen oxideert het ijzer in het grondwater. Het geoxideerde ijzer vangt het arseen af middels adsorptie. De jury was zeer te spreken over het feit dat David Moed zijn civiele achtergrond combineerde met het chemische vakgebied. Hij heeft met zijn onderzoek een groot maatschappelijk probleem aangepakt en zijn oplossing voldoet aan alle criteria, aldus de jury. Eefje van der Werf kreeg de tweede plaats. Zij ontving een cheque ter waarde van euro voor haar master scriptie over bewonersbelangen bij renovatie in bewoonde staat. Met dit onderzoek is vanuit de bewoner gewerkt naar een aanpak voor renovatie die zowel qua oplossing, uitvoering als procesmatig meer afgestemd is met zijn of haar belangen, gebruik en wensen. Op deze manier wordt het proces om huurders mee te krijgen voor een hoog niveau renovatie versoepeld. De jury was te spreken over haar net uitgewerkte scriptie over een realistisch probleem. Zij heeft zich in haar onderzoek, naast de standaard renovatie, ook op het procesmatige en psychologisch vlak gericht. Haar inlevende aanpak en de concrete conclusies en oplossingen worden door de jury gewaardeerd. 12

Therefore on the 10th of May, IWA-YWP Benelux organises a mini symposium about developing new technologies to full scale applications. Different speakers will guide you along current developments in new aerobic granular sludge technologies (Nereda and Anammox granules) and especially discuss what it takes to make an economically viable technology from an interesting scientific finding. Accurate information about rainfall and flooding is needed to be able to prevent such damage. This information, however, is very difficult to acquire, especially for cities with their highly variable urban landscapes that cause storms and water flows to move in unpredictable ways. Whether we want to model flooding, explain occurred flood damage or flood complaints, accurate rainfall data are an absolute necessity and precisely this type of data is lacking for urban areas. That is why we started the RainGain project: to obtain detailed data about peak precipitation and flooding at an urban scale. Rainfall radars will be implemented at four pilot locations: Leuven, London, Paris and Rotterdam, using the latest available technologies. The pilots serve as test sites to demonstrate the capabilities of radar technology for urban rainfall estimation and forecasting. The aim of one of the work package in the project is to develop and implement a system for estimation and forecasting of local rainfall on the basis of data acquired from rainfall radars in combination with traditional rainfall measurement devices. This system will be applicable for urban areas of North- West Europe. It will make use of fine scale radar technology (X-band and super-resolution C-band), and will allow local city managers to forecast, warn about and control urban pluvial flood impacts such as inundations at street- or house-scale. An international workshop will be organised in April by KU Leuven to exchange experiences gained on the use of fine scale (X-band and super-resolution C-band) radar data, combined with other existing rainfall data, for street level rainfall estimation. International radar experts will be invited to share knowledge from their experiences and discussions will be organised with the final aim to agree upon common methods for street level rainfall estimation. 16 Nieuwe medewerkers Guendalina Bruni Hello, my name is Guendalina Bruni and I come from Grottammare, a beautiful little town along the Adriatic coast, in Italy. I got graduated as environmental engineer at the University of Bologna, in Once finalized my study I moved to Spain where I started working as hydrologist for the Basin Authority of Jucar, which is the main river system of Valencia region. I have been working in catchment hydrology as well as in drinking water network design. I dedicated the last 2 years to the River Basin Management Plan, under the Water framework directive, and in particular to the assessment of environmental minimum flows of the whole Jucar basin (in the picture I was measuring the discharge of one of the most beautiful and natural branches of Jucar river, near Cuenca). Since February I am here in Nederland, I have started working at TUDelft as PhD candidate. My work is part of an EU project, RAINGAIN, dealing with urban flood forecast. It will be focused on the coupling of rainfall forecast from new generation radar technology with sewer network model (combined with a 2D overland flow model). g.bruni@tudelft.nl Haoyu Wang I was born in 1985 in the city of Harbin, which is named as Pearl on the swan s neck in China. Both my bachelor degree (2008) and master degree (2010) were gotten at the major of Environmental Science and Engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT). Now I am a PhD candidate at State Key Laboratory of Urban Water Resource & Environment at HIT. Sponsored by Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC), I started working at Section of Sanitary Engineering of UNESCO-IHE as a PhD researcher for two years from December Since this February I started doing research at TUDelft for several months. At TUDelft, I join in a project which focuses on wastewater treatment by using EGSB system, cooperating with DSM. My previous studies were about microbial fuel cell (MFC) and microbial electrolysis cell (MEC). I like yoga very much. Moreover, I like playing chess and enjoying movie. I come from Portugal and I am at TU Delft doing my Master Thesis in order to obtain the degree of Master in Environmental Engineering from Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto (Portugal). I am working at the Sanitary Engineering section of Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences on Specific Methanogenic Activity and Phosphatase Activity of an anaerobic reactor used to treat the sludge resulting from marine Recirculation Aquaculture Systems. My research is supported by the project Emission Minimization of Marine Aquaculture Recirculation Systems (EM-MARES) carried out by PhD researcher Xuedong Zhang who is my daily supervisor. I am a PhD student of the faculty Civil Engineering & Geosciences at TU Delft and I started on the 1st of January The subject of my doctoral thesis is about the enhanced elimination of viruses in household water treatment processes by conventional and laser/led UV irradiation technologies, oxidation processes and by filtration, by ceramic, activated carbon and sand filters. I am doing this PhD research at Wetsus in Leeuwarden. My hobbies are having a good time with friends, being outside in the nature, athletics, travelling, and a huge interest for other cultures and languages. l.bachert@tudelft.nl Marta Frolova I was born in 1990, in Rezekne, that is a town on the East of Latvia (one of the most beautiful countries in the world). I have been studying in Norwegian University of Science and Technology as an exchange student in autumn 2010 and this year came to Delft for an internship for a time period Here I work together with Ran Shang and my topic is Rejection of EfOM and ions from WWTP effluent water by back-washable ceramic tight UF membranes (BCNF). 18 Naresh Singhal I am an Associate Professor in Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Auckland (UoA) in New Zealand and am visiting TU Delft for a period of 5 months (February to June) as a part of my Sabbatical leave. During this time I will be working on the Emerging substances: Towards an absolute barrier (ESTAB) project. This area overlaps with the investigation of fate, transport, and impact of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) being carried out by me research group. Funding for my visit to TU has been provided by De Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO) via a visitors grant to Prof. Jan Peter van der Hoek. Over the past month I have had the pleasure of getting to know as well as work with Prof. Jan Peter van der Hoek, Prof. Arne Verliefde, Cheryl Bertelkamp, and Franca Kramer. During this time I have been involved with the experimental design of batch experiments to assess the degradation of organic micropollutants (OMPs) in the laboratory under a variety of environmental conditions (e.g., carbon source availability and redox potential). We have gone through several iterations of the experimental plan, which has been iteratively modified following new ideas put forward by someone in the team this exchange of ideas has been quite rewarding. These experiments will feed into column experiments whose design will pose other hurdles and challenges (and I look forward to these discussions with interest). The overall scope of the ESTAB project is massive with the involvement of 10 organizations from three countries working on three separate technologies in an integrated manner. The project covers aspects of groundwater flow, biogeochemical interactions in soil, membrane filtration, and sorption phenomena, coupled with new product development and QASAR modelling to predict the fate of OMPs. My background is in groundwater fate and transport, having done my PhD from Princeton University (USA) on in-situ bioremediation. Since joining UoA in 1996 I have been involved with research spanning bioclogging of soils, metal speciation kinetics in leachate contaminated groundwater, microbeorganic ligand-heavy metal interactions in stormwater runoff, biological nitrogen removal processes (lately with a focus on nitrous oxide emissions from these processes), in-situ bioremediation of hydrophobic organic pollutants, Fenton and catalytic (ZVI, nano metal oxides, Fe-TAML etc.) and phyto degradation of organics, and fate and impact of EDCs/PPCPs in treatment processes and the environment. This breadth is proving useful in my involvement with the ESTAB project. The objectives of this project are complementary to the activities that my group has conducted on EDCs/PPCPs our focus has been on the oxidative and reductive transformation of OMPs by microbes, plants, chemicals and catalysts, with particular attention to the formation of intermediates and the change in impact via quantification of estrogenicity. Recently, we have initiated research on developing a theoretical framework based on electron density distribution in chemicals for modelling their sequence and rate of degradation under specific environmental conditions. These activities fit hand in glove with the goals of the ESTAB project that I am involved with. 19 Ric van de Water Since October 1st 2011, I am working as a program director Industriewater within CiTG. This is a parttime job for roughly 1 to 1.5 days per week. After a career of 32 years with Royal Dutch Shell, the water supply company Evides asked me for this position. I am a graduated chemical engineer (Ir.) from the Technical University of Eindhoven (1976). With Shell I had several positions ranging from technology, operations, trading and logistics. My last positions were within global procurement. I was responsible for the sourcing of many chemical products, catalysts and additives for Shell s refineries and chemical sites worldwide. One of my core activities was the contacts and global contracts with suppliers like Nalco and GE in the field of watertreament and process. So the link with water is clear. Also my name is quite appropriate. I am 60 years (1951). I have two children and my partner is Elly who is a teacher at a primary school. My hobbies are golf, piano playing, wine and dine and gardening. I love to travel as I did many years with Shell. My new role at TU Delft is to liaise between the TU and more specific the department Section Sanitary Engineering (CiTG) and the industry. My main task is to promote research that can be performed by MSc students and PhD s or Post-Docs on industry water/ waste water, which is funded by the industry. I m 24 years old and am studying environmental technology in the faculty of bioscience engineering. I m in Delft as an exchange student, and am finishing my thesis here in Delft. I have Prof. Verliefde as my supervisor. My thesis deals with the removal of pharmaceuticals using activated carbon, and it s thus part of the ESTAB project Emerging Substances: Towards an Absolute Barrier. I m working together with David, Jenny and Cheryl on different kinds of experiments, which include relating adsorption to solute and carbon properties, and removing natural organic matter prior to activated carbon adsorption and its influence on the adsorption of pharmaceuticals. I also have an experiment running in the University of Ghent which involves the dehalogenation of pharmaceuticals prior to activated carbon adsorption. But something about myself now: I m from Belgium, so guess what I like? ( ) Yes indeed: Belgian French fries, Belgian be(v)er(ages), Belgian chocolate, and Dutch stroopwafels. Other than that I like music and play the horn in an orchestra. My favorite sport is cycling, and (although it s still early) throwing in a little guess: I think Fabian Cancellara will win the Tour of Flanders, and Tom Boonen will win Paris-Roubaix the week after. 20 Dispuut Watermanagement Het Dispuut is bezig met een brede reorganisatie op verschillende vlakken van de organisatie. Na het verbouwen van het hok zijn er nieuwe snellere computers gekomen, een nieuw administratief systeem en is er een nieuwe website in aanbouw. Deze veranderingen hebben ook al een merkbaar effect op de bezettingsgraad van het hok, wat bijna elke dag tot laat in de avond vol zit met meerdere studenten. Ook de commissies zijn allemaal druk bezig. De studietour naar Mozambique, Zimbabwe en Malawi heeft al de maximale hoeveelheid inschrijvingen, ondanks dat het nog steeds een paar extra sponsors nodig heeft. Het jaarlijkse symposium dit jaar over de samenhang van energie en water heeft het hele programma al vast staan en zal plaatsen vinden in het Deltares gebouw op 9 mei aanstaande. De nieuwe activiteiten commissie is druk bezig met de organisatie van een zeil weekend en de Druppel commissie heeft net een extra dikke tweede editie van het blad dit collegejaar naar alle leden verzonden. Al dit harde werk wordt elk jaar beloond met een speciaal uitje voor alle bestuur en commissie leden. Dit jaar was dat een kookworkshop waar we met zijn twintigen eerst zelf moesten koken. Na twee uur in de keuken staan werden we beloond met een heerlijke Indisch maaltijd.
