2 Het wereldwijd belang van CITES The Future We Want (paragraph 203) CITES and Rio+20 (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, June 2012) We recognize the important role of CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna), an international agreement that stands at the intersection between trade, the environment and development; promotes the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, should contribute to tangible benefits for local people, and ensures that no species entering into international trade is threatened with extinction. We recognize the economic, social and environmental impacts of illicit trafficking in wildlife, where firm and strengthened action needs to be taken on both the supply and demand sides. In this regard, we emphasize the importance of effective international cooperation among relevant multilateral environmental agreements and international organizations.

3 CITES Vision Statement To Conserve biodiversity and contribute to its sustainable use by ensuring that no species of wild fauna or flora becomes or remains subject to unsustainable exploitation through international trade, thereby contributing to the significant reduction of the rate of biodiversity loss crystallizes the role of the Convention in the future, with its continuing relevance coming into sharp focus every day. - CITES help wild dier- en plantensoorten te beschermen door te verzekeren en te regelen dat hun internationaal handel duurzaam, legaal en gedocumenteerd/traceerbaar verloopt - CITES draagt bij tot economische ontwikkeling en ondersteunt lokale gemeenschappen het (consumptive/non-consumptive) gebruik van wilde soorten valoriseert dieren en planten, biodiversiteit en ecosystemen - Maar het huidige tempo waarmee de biodiversiteit afneemt o.m. door niet-duurzame of illegale handel - vormt een direct gevaar voor zowel wilde dieren en planten als mensen en hun levensonderhoud

5 Vicuña (Vicugna vicugna) Andes (Argentinië, Bolivia, Chili, Ecuador en Peru) Vicuña wol: 5X duurder dan kasjmier; >>1000 EUR/sjaal 1960: aantallen gedaald tot ca : sommige landen verklaren vicuña uitgestorven Vicuñas onder CITES sinds 1975 Appendix I en II 1987: Regionaal verdrag; sommige populaties zodanig toegenomen dat handel in wol afkomstig van geschoren levende dieren terug wordt toegestaan (van Appendix I naar Appendix II) 2008: aantal vicuñas toegenomen 350,000 Tegenwoordig is de soort goed beheerd: pop. groeien en de lokale bevolking profiteert direct van de handel in vicuña wol

6 Crocodylia 23 soorten krokodillen, alligators, kaaimannen en gharials Azië, Afrika, Midden-en Zuid-Amerika, Australië Bedreigd door o.a. verlies van habitat en ongecontroleerde jacht voor huiden in 50 en 60 De afname van veel wilde krokodillen zorgde voor vrees voor uitsterven Alle soorten op Appendix I of II sinds 1975 Bultkrokodil Crocodylus moreletii van Midden-Amerika illustreert het succes van beheersmaatregelen en ranching: Nagenoeg uitgestorven in 1970 Totaal jacht- en exportverbod uitgevaardigd; CITES Appendix I in 1975 Bescherming; opstarten ranching programma's om duurzaam lokaal gebruik te stimuleren Soort grotendeels hersteld - in 2010 op Appendix II Handel is hervat valorisatie van een pest + wetlands crocodylus moreletii

7 Strombus gigas Grote zee schelp uit de Caraïben Wat handels volume en socio-economische waarde betreft veruit de belangrijkste CITES soort in de Caraibische region Handel vooral in vlees; ook schelpen en parels CITES Appendix II sinds 1992 CITES heeft enorme impact: verplichte samenwerking tussen export landen; export quotas en handlesbeperkingen; gericht export verbod tegen sommige landen; bestrijding illegale handel; technische steun; samenwerking met regionale visserij organisaties en import landen crocodylus moreletii

8 African cherry (Prunus africana) Tropisch Afrika, Madagaskar Schors van Prunus africana : middel tegen prostaatkanker, goedaardige prostaathypertrofie en andere aandoeningen zoals koorts, malaria en buikpijn De schors op de internationale markt: wild (kleinschalige teelten van de boom in Kameroen, Kenia en Madagaskar) Ongereguleerde handel van schors bedreiging CITES Appendix II in 1995 Wetenschappelijke gegevens werden verzameld om de soort beter te beheren Kameroen is nu in staat om op een duurzame manier het schors te oogsten en inkomsten te genereren voor lokale gemeenschappen. Ze vormen een voorbeeld voor andere landen.

9 Sneeuwklokjes (Galanthus woronowii) Vroege lente bloeiers West-Azië en Europa, vooral in de Kaukasus Georgia exporteert 15 miljoen wilde sneeuwvlokjes (bollen) / jaar TR en NL Hoge vraag en ongecontroleerde oogst vormde bedreiging voor de Georgische en Turkse wilde sneeuwvlokjes CITES Appendix II Georgië heeft met CITES de wilde populaties beoordeeld en duurzame oogst- en export quota vastgesteld Tegenwoordig is de sector goed gereguleerd waar mensen in de toekomst van kunnen profiteren
