Een geïntegreerde aanpak, waarbij alle betrokken disciplines samen zoeken naar het meest gepaste resultaat, is daarbij ons uitgangspunt. Toch is het soms ook belangrijk om stil te staan bij de verschillende deelaspecten of -disciplines op zich. Zij functioneren binnen een geïntegreerd team, maar bieden elk hun eigen inzichten en meerwaarden. Deze editie van ALERT richt zich op onze interieurafdeling, waarbij we vertrekken vanuit hun specifieke blik en de belangrijke meerwaarde die dat met zich meebrengt voor onze projecten. BURO II & ARCHI+I is a multidisciplinary design office that unites different types of expertise based on the conviction that 1 plus 1 can make three. Our guiding principle is an integrated approach that brings together all the disciplines required to find the most appropriate result. But sometimes it is important to consider each of the distinct aspects or disciplines in their own right. While they operate as part of an integrated team, each contributes its own particular insights and added values. Het zijn deze waarden die we willen toelichten vanuit de praktijk en vanuit concrete voorbeelden. Als onafhankelijk studiebureau zoeken we keer op keer naar sterke concepten met zin voor realiteit en financiële haalbaarheid. De creativiteit van onze interieurarchitecten vertaalt zich in een totaalaanpak voor elk project, aangepast aan de specifieke randvoorwaarden en wensen van de opdrachtgever. Maar interieurontwerp staat bij BURO II & ARCHI+I niet op zichzelf. Het maakt integraal deel uit van een totaalconcept voor het volledige project. De synergie tussen architecten en interieurarchitecten leidt tot betere gebouwen en meer kwaliteitsvolle ruimten. Ook de samenwerking met landschapsarchitecten draagt bij tot een ruime interpretatie van ruimte : binnen- en buitenruimten krijgen dezelfde aandacht en kwaliteit van detaillering. Ook met ingenieurs wordt nauw samengewerkt om het concept ook technisch te optimaliseren. We hopen zo een inzicht te bieden in de kijk van een interieurarchitect en de meerwaarde die hieruit voortvloeit voor een project. Interieur is immers zoveel meer dan een verzameling van design objecten het is creëren van unieke ruimtes op maat van onze klanten. Nine interior architects work together at BURO II & ARCHI+I, united by shared values and principles. It is these values that we wish to explain, based on hands-on experience and using real-life examples. As an independent design office, we search for strong concepts for every project, while respecting reality and financial feasibility. Our interior architects creativity translates into a total approach to each project, tailored to fit the client s specific preconditions and wishes. However, interior design is not an island at BURO II & ARCHI+I. It is an integral part of an all-embracing concept for an entire project. The synergy between architects and interior architects produces better buildings and higher quality spaces. Similarly, the cooperation that exists with landscape architects is conducive to a broad interpretation of space : indoor and outdoor spaces receive equal attention and get the same quality of detailing. To optimise the concept technically, there is also close cooperation with engineers. We hope to give you an insight into the world as seen through the eyes of an interior architect and show you the added value that this generates for a project. After all, an interior is so much more than a collection of designer objects it is the creation of unique spaces tailored to fit our clients. Uit: Totalité et Infini (1961), p130, Emmanuel Levinas Als we de omschrijving van het woord interieur volgens Van Dale mogen geloven, dan betekent interieur: het inwendige van een gebouw m.n. wat de aankleding, meubilering en stoffering betreft. Deze enge interpretatie maakt van de interieurontwerper een tweederangsontwerper die zich bezighoudt met de verfraaiing van de architectuur. Zo wordt de eigenheid van het interieurontwerp ondergeschikt aan de architectuur. Interieurarchitectuur gaat niet over aankleden en verfraaien, maar over beleven, gebruiken, hergebruiken en toe-eigenen. De architectuur bezet een stuk grond met een gebouw en geeft die ingenomen ruimte terug aan de gemeenschap om deze te gebruiken. De gebruiker palmt die ruimte in om de wereld binnen te halen en de buitenruimte te organiseren. De architect kijkt vanuit de omgeving hoe hij die plek het best ruimtelijk dienstbaar kan maken. De interieurarchitect kijkt van binnen naar buiten en onderzoekt hoe die ruimte op verschillende manieren kan gebruikt worden binnen de vooropgestelde randvoorwaarden. Deze kunnen tegelijk beperkend en inspirerend zijn. Hij daagt de gebruiker uit om vanuit de ruimtebeleving de omgeving van het gebouw anders te beleven en te bekijken. Met andere woorden: het interieur is een belevingswereld die de gebruiker toelaat om zijn wereld te ontdekken. Het is dus aan de interieurontwerper om met de gebruiker op zoek te gaan naar de verschillende manieren waarop een ruimte kan gelezen en gebruikt worden. Vervolgens is het aan de gebruiker om aan te geven welke geborgenheid hij/zij nodig heeft om de beleving en het gebruik te maximaliseren. De interieurontwerper is dus niet degene die de architectuur aankleedt en bemeubelt, maar degene die de meerwaarde van de lege ruimte maximaliseert door het veranderend gebruik, en de veranderende beleving te concretiseren. Architectuurontwerp en interieurontwerp kunnen daarom door een integrale benadering van bij de start van een project elkaar maximaliseren vanuit hun eigen specifieke benadering. Om dit uit te werken, vertrekt de interieurontwerper van het concrete gebruik, de technische mogelijkheden en de dagelijkse behoeften om zo te komen tot een leefomgeving die herkenbaar is voor de gebruiker. Belangrijk hierbij is dat verandering en ontwikkeling de rode draad vormen voor alle bewoners en alle gebruikers, en dus essentieel deel uitmaken van het ontwerpconcept. Daarom is een interieur nooit een afgewerkt geheel, maar een reeks van aanleidingen die de gebruikers toelaten hun leefwereld op te bouwen. Die aanleidingen vindt de ontwerper in het If we are to believe the definition of interior given in the Van Dale dictionary, it means: The inside of a building, especially the decoration, furnishing and upholstery. This narrow interpretation relegates an interior designer to a second-rate designer who simply brightens up the architecture. It makes the distinctiveness of interior design subordinate to the architecture. Interior architecture is not about furnishing and decorating. It is about experiencing, using, reusing and taking ownership. Architecture puts a building on a piece of land and returns the occupied space to the community for usage. The user embellishes the space to bring the world indoors and to organise the space outdoors. An architect looks from the surroundings towards a space at how it can be made useful spatially. An interior architect looks from the inside to the outside and explores how the space can be used in different ways within the defined preconditions. These may be restrictive and inspirational at the same time. Building on the experience conveyed by the space, he challenges the user to experience and view the building s environs differently. Essentially, the interior evokes an experience that allows the user to discover his world. It is up to the interior designer to embark on an exploration with the user to find different ways in which space can be read and used. Then it is the turn of the user to indicate what sense of security he/ she needs to maximise personal experience and usage. The interior designer is not the person who decorates and furnishes the architecture, but the person who maximises the added value of an empty space by concretising the changing usage and changing experience. Through their specificity architectural design and interior design can ideally complement each other by adopting an overarching approach right from the start of a project. To materialise this approach the interior designer works from the baseline of the specific usage, technical possibilities and day-to-day needs to arrive at a living environment the user recognises. It is important for change and development to be the guiding light for all occupants and users, and thus essentially form part of the design concept. That is why an interior is never a finished entity, but a series of triggers that enable users to assemble the world in which they live. The designer finds these triggers by producing user scenarios to visualise how differently people can experience a space, how differently they can use it, how differently they look from its inside to the outside and how differently they can organise themselves. These scenarios are the 2 3

Zoals het interieur de belevingsruimte is om naar onze omgeving te kijken, zo is de publieke ruimte ons collectief interieur om naar de stad te kijken en de stad te beleven. Het begrip interieur moet ten overstaan van de verklaring in Van Dale opgewaardeerd worden met een ruimere betekenis. Die volwaardige interpretatie moet meteen ook de rol van de interieurontwerper in het uitbouwen van onze leefomgeving duidelijk maken. Dit is noodzakelijk om te komen tot een volwaardige ontwerpopgave voor de binnenomgeving en buitenomgeving. Om die andere kijk, en dat ander gebruik te visualiseren, hebben wij de fotograaf Thomas De Bruyne opdracht gegeven om het concreet en veelzijdig gebruik van plekken en gebouwen in beeld te brengen vanuit zijn eigen autonome benadering. Interieurfotografie mag naar ons gevoel het dagdagelijks gebruik niet maskeren maar integendeel, het in al zijn varianten zichtbaar maken. foundations of the different embodiments that are possible within the available space. Just as the interior is the place from where we experience what surrounds us, public spaces are our collective interior for viewing and experiencing a city. The term interior requires upgrading from Van Dale s definition to take on a wider meaning. This mature interpretation must instantly make clear the interior designer s role in constructing our living environment. It is essential to do this in order to come up with an all-embracing approach to designing indoor and outdoor environments. To visualise this different vision and different usage, we commissioned photographer Thomas De Bruyne to capture the concrete and versatile use of places and buildings, using his own autonomous approach. To our mind, interior photography must not mask the everyday usage of space, but do exactly the opposite: visualise it, in all its variants. 4 5

8 totaalbeleving als leidraad In de afwerking van een interieur wordt niets aan het toeval overgelaten. Hiertoe worden alle mogelijkheden of opties onderzocht en wordt uit deze opties de juiste oplossing gekozen. Ervaring leert dat dit een complex verhaal is. De samenhang tussen architectuur, technieken en interieur is van die aard dat ze onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden zijn. De benadering vanuit interieur legt de juiste accenten binnen het multidisciplinair bureau waar zowel architecten, ingenieurs-technieken als ingenieurs-stabiliteit samenwerken om nét dat iets meer aan te bieden. Het resultaat is geen aaneensluiting van toevalligheden maar een methodiek die we in elk ontwerp toepassen. De kantoren voor de firma Valcke in Vlamertinge zijn exemplarisch voor deze totaalaanpak en illustreren de verwevenheid tussen architectuur, technieken en interieur. Valcke is als familiebedrijf gespecialiseerd in geprefabriceerde betonconstructies en kent tot op vandaag een gestage groei. De personeelsleden zaten her en der verspreid over verschillende aaneensluitende lokalen die dateerden uit de jaren 60. Onderling contact tussen de collega s was eerder moeilijk. De bouwheer was quasi onmiddellijk vrij duidelijk over zijn visie: het kantoor moest open zijn, toegankelijk voor iedereen en leesbaar zijn als geheel. Deze keuze was meteen de aanzet voor een globale aanpak. Aanvullend op het programma van de bouwheer werd een uitgesproken duurzame visie vooropgesteld. De ambities op gebied van ecologie en duurzaamheid vormden een uitdaging in elk aspect van het ontwerp. An integrated experience as our guideline When finishing an interior nothing is left to chance: all the options and possibilities are examined and the right solution is chosen from these options. Our experience has taught us that this is a complex exercise. The relationship between architecture, engineering and the interior is such that they are inextricably linked. An approach starting from the interior allows us to to emphasise all the right points within a multidisciplinary office in which architects, technical and structural engineers work together to offer customers an even fuller experience. The outcome is not an amalgamation of coincidences but a method that we apply in every one of our designs. The offices of Valcke in Vlamertinge are a good example of this integrated approach, illustrating how architecture, engineering and the interior are interwoven. Valcke is a family-owned company specialising in prefab concrete constructions and has known a steady growth over the years. The employees were spread out over various, connecting offices dating from the Sixties, which did not really facilitate contacts between colleagues. The principal was quite clear about his vision: an open office that was accessible for everyone and that could be managed as a unit. This choice was an ideal impulse for a global approach. In addition to the principal s programme the aim was also to build a sustainable building. The ambitions in terms of ecology and sustainability were a challenge at every level of the design. De uitdaging was duidelijk: het ontwerpen van een nieuw open huis van beton. De footprint vloeide voort uit de contouren van het perceel en de opgelegde stedenbouwkundige voorschriften. Het bouwen van de vanzelfsprekende toren op de hoek van het perceel was misschien de meest evidente oplossing maar bood geen antwoord op de vraag van de bouwheer naar een directe relatie tussen de afdelingen. Deze uitgangspunten resulteerden in een architecturale tentstructuur hoge slanke kolommen ondersteunen een hellend betonvlak. De gevels zijn vrij gesloten enkel de schijnbaar willekeurig geplaatste strookramen en lichtkoepels doorbreken het volume. De kolommen en de volumes waarin de gesloten functies werden ondergebracht, volgen de lijnen van de contouren van het gebouw. Ook de bouwheer stond voor een uitdaging bij de uitwerking van deze structuur. Geen enkele balk, geen enkel plafond of wandpaneel was orthogonaal de volledige balk- en dakstructuur ligt onder helling. Het resultaat is een levensgroot visitekaartje voor de firma Valcke. Binnen deze context was de interieuropdracht veelzijdig. Samen met de bouwheer werd de werking van het bedrijf geanalyseerd en kreeg het programma vorm. Gesprekken met de bouwheer en het personeel vormden de basis voor het in kaart brengen van de dagelijkse werking. Uit de analyse bleek dat het aantal gesloten functies volledig integreerbaar was in enkele losstaande volumes volumes als ordende eenheden binnen het open landschapskantoor. Hierdoor werd de volledige stroom van bezoekers en gebruikers in kaart gebracht. Vanuit dit gegeven werd de architectuur van het gebouw aangepast het gebouw kreeg enkele uitsnijdingen die verschillende ingangen omvatten. Deze studie had ook als resultaat dat de bebouwde oppervlakte niet groter moest gemaakt worden dan oorspronkelijk was gedacht. De bouwheer heeft voor dit project gebruik gemaakt van een nieuw soort cement, Cemroc een product van Holcim waarbij de CO²-uitstoot 95 % lager ligt dan tijdens de productie van standaardcement. De burelen van Valcke Prefab Beton zijn een testproject, dit cement werd hier voor de allereerste keer in prefabelementen gebruikt. De bouwheer slaagde er ook in om met dit cement egaal witte betonpanelen te fabriceren, waardoor de keuze werd gemaakt om deze betonpanelen ook aan de binnenzijde zichtbaar te houden. Ook van binnenuit wordt op deze manier de vakkundigheid van de bouwheer geïntegreerd. Hierbij was de ruimte-akoestiek een belangrijke uitdaging. Aangezien zoveel mogelijk betonwanden en betonplafonds vrij moesten blijven om warmte en koude te kunnen opslaan, waren standaardoplossingen niet mogelijk. De gesloten volumes leverden de oplossing: ze werden bekleed met verticale latten en op het betonplafond werden geluidsabsorberende schotten aangebracht. Door al tijdens de ontwerpfase doordacht om te gaan met het akoestisch probleem, is de oplossing zo goed als onzichtbaar. De aanwezigheid van het witte beton werd aangevuld met een beperkt materialenpallet. De kleur van de gietvloer is dezelfde als die van de betonwanden. Het accent werd gelegd op de afwerking van de vrijstaande volumes en het (op maat van het gebouw) ontworpen meubilair. The challenge was clear: to design a new, open concrete house. The footprint was the outcome of the site s contours and the valid urban planning requirements. Although building the obvious tower on the corner of the site was the most evident solution it did not provide an answer to the principal s request in terms of a direct relationship between the departments. These starting points resulted in an architectural tent structure - tall slender columns support a sloping concrete plain. The walls are rather closed in appearance the seemingly randomly placed ribbon windows and the skylights are the only openings in the volume. The columns and the volumes housing the closed functions follow the lines of the building s contours. The principal also faced a challenge when it came to building this structure. Not a single beam, not a single ceiling or wall panel was at a right angle the entire beam and roof structure is sloped. The result is a life-size business card for Valcke. Within this framework the assignment for the interior design was multifaceted. Together with the principal we analysed the company s operations and the programme was defined. Discussions with the principal and with the employees helped us map the daily operations. The analysis revealed that the closed functions could be easily integrated in a few separate volumes volumes as organising units within the open landscape office. This allowed us to map the complete flow of visitors and users. This led to an adaptation of the building s architecture some excisions were made in the building to house various entrances. This study also revealed that the orginally conceived built-up surface did not have to be extended. The principal used a new type of cement for this project called Cemroc, a product by Holcim. The CO²-emissions during production are 95% lower than during the production of conventional cement. The offices of Valcke Prefab Concrete are a pilot project. It was the first time that this cement was used in prefabricated elements. The principal also succeeded in manufacturing smooth white concrete panels with this cement, prompting us to choose to leave the panels exposed on the inside as well. The principal s expertise is thus also incorporated in the building from the inside out. To do this, the acoustics of the space were an important challenge. In view of the fact that the concrete walls and ceilings had to be left maximally exposed in order to be able to store heat and cold, conventional solutions were not applicable. The closed volumes provided the alternative: they were clad with vertical strips and sound-absorbing partitions were installed against the concrete ceiling. Because the acoustic issue was already tackled during the design phase the solution is almost invisible. The presence of the white concrete was completed with a limited range of materials. The colour of the screed floor is the same as that of the concrete walls. The emphasis was on the finishing of the separate volumes and on the (customised) furniture

11 De kleuterafdeling van de gemeenteschool van Oostduinkerke was aan uitbreiding toe. Door de gestage groei van het leerlingenaantal gedurende de voorbije jaren werden een aantal klassen in klascontainers ondergebracht. Plaatsgebrek was de grootste uitdaging voor dit project. Het nieuwe gebouw is een passieve school waarbij de speelzone zich op het dak bevindt meteen de oplossing voor het plaatsgebrek. De school bevat zeven klassen, een gemeenschappelijke ruimte, sanitair en een gemeenschappelijke berging. De keuze voor één bouwlaag voor een gebouw voor kleuters is een logische keuze. De zeven klassen worden rond een polyvalente zaal georganiseerd in functie van een optimale toegankelijkheid en overzichtelijkheid. Er is een rechtstreekse verbinding met het speeldak via een trapmeubel of kinderzittribune. Het interieur vertrekt van de leefwereld van de kleuters. Alle klasjes hebben hun eigen kleur, die ook terug te vinden is in de signalisatie, in de looplijnen naar de verschillende klasjes en aan de binnenzijde van de lichthappers die voor aangenaam daglicht zorgen. De polyvalente ruimte kan bij slecht weer gebruikt worden als speelruimte, en de trap in de zaal is tegelijk een kindertribune. In de zaal zelf kunnen de kleuters hun werkjes tentoonstellen in speciaal daartoe voorziene vitrinekastjes. Het nieuwe gebouw combineert de voordelen van een landschappelijke inpassing en aansluiting op de bebouwde omgeving met een kwalitatieve buitenspeelruimte voor de kinderen. Om de impact op de omgeving en het hoogteverschil naar het dak te beperken, zit de nieuwbouw gedeeltelijk ingegraven in het terrein. In het verlengde van alle klassen bevindt zich een windvrij en beschut klastuintje dat dienst doet als een veilige buitenruimte. Kinderen kunnen zowel op de grasvlakte rondom de school als op het dak spelen. Die speelzone op het dak is volledig betreedbaar en wordt bereikt via een groene helling en een luie trap. Het creëren van een totaalmilieu zit ons in het bloed. Dagelijks maken we elkaar en onze klanten erop attent dat alle aspecten eigen aan een nieuw gebouw onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden zijn. Van in het basisconcept wordt rekening gehouden met bouwkundige, ecologische, technische, economische en esthetische aspecten die eigen zijn aan het bouwproces. De synthese van al deze aspecten is de voedingsbodem voor een rijk concept waarbij de verschillende deelaspecten gemaximaliseerd worden. The kindergarten of the municipal school of Oostduinkerke was in need of expansion. As a result of the steady growth of the number of pupils in recent years, several classes were housed in class containers. The greatest challenge in this project proved to be a lack of space. The new building is a passive school with the play area on the building s roof, thus solving the issue of the lack of space. The school has seven classrooms, a common space, sanitation facilities and shared storage. The choice for a one storybuilding for small children is a logical one. The seven classrooms were organised around a multi-purpose hall in function of optimal accessibility and a good overview. Children can access the play-roof via a stair structure which can also be used as seating for the children. The interior was designed in function of the children. All the classrooms have their own colour, which is also used in the signage, in the walk lines to the various classes and on the inside of the light-catchers, which provide pleasant daylight. The multi-purpose hall can be used as a play area on rainy days and the staircase in the hall can also be used as a stand. The children can exhibit their work in the hall in specially designed display cases. The new building combines the advantages of spatial integration and integration in the built-up surroundings with a qualitative outdoor playing area for the children. The new-build has been partly dug in to limit the impact on the surrounding area and the level difference with the roof. Each classroom is prolonged with a wind-free, protected classroom garden which is used as a safe, outdoor space. Children can play in the grassland around the school as well as on the roof. The play area on the roof can be fully used and is accessed via a green slope and low-raise stairs. Creating an integrated environment comes naturally to us. Every day we remind ourselves and our clients that all the aspects that are typical of a new building are inextricably linked with each other. We take into account architectural, ecological, technical, economic and aesthetic aspects that are characteristic of the building process from the very beginning, when we start working on the basic design concept. The combination of all of these aspects provides the starting point for a multi-layered concept in which the various sub-aspects are maximised

12 interieur als aanleiding voor een nieuwe manier van wonen, werken, leven Interior as impulse for a new way of living and working eerste voorstel optimalisatie Het reconstrueren van hoe een probleem ontstaan is, volgt niet dezelfde logica als het nadenken over een oplossing. Vanuit de wisselwerking tussen de bouwheer en ontwerper en de gedachtewisseling die tussen hen ontstaat, komen er nieuwe inzichten. Dit is een groeiproces. Tijdens het ontwerpproces is het niet zo vreemd dat een bouwheer zelf inziet dat hij anders kan gaan wonen, werken of leven. Dankzij deze wisselwerking tussen bouwheer en ontwerper ontstaan er gaandeweg nieuwe inzichten. Bij de inrichting van de kantoren van de IT-servicecompany M-team (voorheen GFDI-Hearis-CPC) ging de opdracht een stuk verder. M-team levert hoogtechnologische diensten aan de neutrale, liberale en onafhankelijke ziekenfondsen. De bouwheer vroeg ons om op zoek te gaan naar een nieuwe locatie voor zijn steeds groeiende organisatie. Dat lukte vrij snel een nieuwe site in Anderlecht was qua mobiliteit het best gelegen. De site bleek ook geschikt voor de bouw van het gevraagde bouwprogramma. Het werd duidelijk dat de interne bedrijfsorganisatie efficiënter herdacht kon worden. Bevragingen, verregaande analyses en voorstellen gingen vooraf aan de uiteindelijke inrichting. Bouwheer en architect herschreven samen het gevraagde bouwprogramma. Oorspronkelijk wou de bouwheer het bestaande kantoormeubilair behouden. In onderling overleg bleek dat het oppervlaktegebruik van het gebouw geoptimaliseerd kon worden door het gebruik van benches in plaats van de bestaande burelen in L-vorm. Hierdoor kwam de vierde verdieping vrij. Die was voorzien op een mogelijke uitbreiding en kon nu worden verhuurd, wat de kosten in de eerstkomende jaren drukte. De stap om van gesloten kantoren deels over te stappen naar landschapskantoren (waar de teamleden samen zitten met hun teammanager) was een gedachtegang die vorm kreeg doorheen de gesprekken met de bouwheer. De interne manier van werken werd gewijzigd als gevolg van het oplossen van het interieurvraagstuk. De bouwheer heeft gaandeweg ingezien dat een nieuwe manier van werken geïntroduceerd kon worden. Ook het bedrijfsrestaurant op het gelijkvloers is herdacht. De semi-open keuken is een ontmoetingsplek voor de maandelijkse teamactiviteiten. Het aansluitende buitenterras is een ideale uitbreiding van het restaurant en wordt ook gebruikt voor informele vergaderingen. Veel aandacht ging naar de koffiehoeken, terrassen en binnentuinen waardoor de relatie tussen binnen en buiten in elkaar overloopt, en de leefbaarheid van het gebouw voor de gebruiker toeneemt. When trying to understand how a problem came about you use a different reasoning than when you are trying to devise a solution. Starting from the interaction between the principal and the designer and the exchange of ideas between them, we arrive at new insights. This is an organic process. During the design process the principal may come to understand that he can live or work in a different way. New insights are often the result of the interaction between the principal and the designer. Our mission was slightly more complicated when we are asked to design the offices of the IT services company, M-team (formerly GFDI-Hearis-CPC). M-team provides hightechnological services to the neutral, liberal and independent health insurance funds. The principal asked us to go in search of a new location for its growing organisation. We found one quite quickly a new site in Anderlecht proved to be ideally suited in terms of mobility. The site was also deemed suited for building the requested building programme. It soon became clear however that the company s internal organisation could become more efficient. Surveys, farreaching analyses and proposals preceded the final design. The principal and the architect together rewrote the requested building programme. Originally the principal wished to retain the existing office furniture. But after mutual consultation it became clear that the building s surface could be optimised by using benches instead of the existing L-shaped desks. As a result the fourth floor became vacant. This was included with a view to a potential extension and could now be rented out, which reduced the costs for the next few years. The decision to switch from closed offices to some landscape offices (where team members share an office with their team manager) was an idea which gradually took shape during the discussions with the principal. The internal work methods changed as a consequence of the solution for the interior. The principal gradually understood that a new way of working could be introduced. The company restaurant on the ground floor was also rethought. The semi-open kitchen now is a meeting place for the monthly team activities. The adjacent outdoor terrace is an ideal extension of the restaurant and is also used for informal meetings. A lot of attention was paid to the coffee corners, terraces and indoor gardens. As a result the indoors and outdoors seamlessly blend in with one another, increasing the building s viability for users

14 Bij complexere dossiers met een langere looptijd zijn vaak meerdere personen als bouwheer betrokken. Door te luisteren naar alle partijen proberen we de verkregen informatie analytisch te verwerken. Op deze manier groeien concepten die niet enkel de duurtijd van een bouwproces overleven maar ook de (nabije) toekomst. Een voorbeeld van zo n complex project is de verbouwing van het vroegere KBC-gebouw in Roeselare. We vertrokken er van de traditionele bibliothecaire voorziening maar moesten het gebouw verbouwen en uitbreiden tot een voor Roeselare en voor heel Vlaanderen vernieuwend platform dat levenslang en levensbreed leren ontwikkelt. Het moet ook toegankelijk zijn voor een breed publiek. De bouwheer, vzw Het Portaal, zal daarvoor alle culturele, wetenschappelijke, educatieve en andere activiteiten ontwikkelen en partnerships uitwerken. De ambities liggen erg hoog: de stad mikt op een intense en brede samenwerking met verschillende sectoren. Het nieuwe platform moet de vooruitstrevende, maatschappelijke en culturele inzichten en verwachtingen van verschillende sectoren samenbrengen en een volledig opzet verwezenlijken. De denkoefening resulteerde in het concept stad en kennis, bedoeld voor een zeer breed en divers publiek. Het platform moet uitgroeien tot een plaats van beleving en ontmoeting en zal een grote toevloed van mensen, o.a. scholieren, winkelende passanten en bewoners, ontvangen die van de voorzieningen zullen gebruik maken. De uiteenlopende activiteiten zullen de buurt dynamiseren en de mensen naar het nieuwe gebouw brengen. Twee bestaande stadsbibliotheken fusioneren en worden in het nieuwe gebouw geïntegreerd. De stad stelde een heterogeen projectteam samen, waarbij elke actor zijn eigen belangen behartigt. In een dergelijke context staan soms behoudsgezinde argumenten tegenover de vooruitstrevende visie van anderen. Daarnaast is er het gegeven van de snelle evolutie van communicatiemiddelen waardoor er voortdurend sprake is van nieuwe programmatorische input. Bovendien is er permanent de uitdaging van het veranderend gebruik. Welke toekomst is weggelegd voor de traditionele bibliotheek? Boeken en CD s dreigen immers te verdwijnen. Nieuwe inzichten worden samen met de bouwheer tijdens het ontwerpproces uitgedacht zodat het gebouw straks een aanleiding zal zijn tot de verandering van een bibliotheek in een echt innoverend platform. De ontwerpers luisteren naar alle partijen. Ook de uiteindelijke gebruikers die straks het gebouw zullen bezoeken geven daarbij belangrijke input. In more complex commissions with a longer duration, the principal is often in fact represented by a combination of several individuals. By listening to all the stakeholders we try to process the information obtained in an analytical manner. This helps us develop concepts which do not only outlive the duration of a building process but are also durable in the (near) future. An example of such a complex project is the renovation of the former KBC building in Roeselare. We started from the idea of a traditional library facility but were then asked to renovate and expand the building converting it into an innovative platform for Roeselare and for Flanders, which develops lifelong and life-wide learning. It also has to be accessible for a wide audience. The principal, the nonprofit organisation Het Portaal, will develop all the cultural, scientific, educational and other activities as well as the partnerships within this framework. The ambitions are high: the city hopes to achieve an intense and wide collaboration with several sectors. The new platform seeks to gather the progressive social and cultural insights and expectations of the various sectors and achieve an integrated global objective. The outcome of the reflection process was the city and knowledge concept, designed for a very wide and diverse audience. The platform must become a meeting place and space for experiences and will receive a large influx of people, including students, passersby who are shopping and locals, who will use the facilities. The wide range of activities will introduce a new dynamic in the neighbourhood and attract people to the new building. Two existing municipal libraries will merge and will be integrated in the new building. The city put together a heterogeneous project team, in which each stakeholder defends his own interests. In such a context conservative arguments may sometimes clash with the progressive views of others. Next to this there is also the issue of the rapidly changing communication tools, resulting in continuous new input into the programme. And naturally there is also the ongoing challenge of the changing use. Which future does a conventional library have? Books and CDs may gradually disappear entirely. New insights are developed, together with the principal, during the design process so that the building may one day transform the library into a true innovative platform. The designers listen to all the stakeholders. The end users who will one day visit the building also provide important input in this frame. Beschikbare informatie wordt verzameld, geïnterpreteerd tot een eenduidig beeld waarbij de kantlijnen uitgezet worden om zo tot een totaalconcept te kunnen komen. De uitdaging van dit langlopend project is om het veranderend gebruik te detecteren en een sterk concept neer te zetten, dat voor langere tijd een antwoord kan bieden op de vragen van alle betrokken partijen. Naast de inhoudelijke component, gaat het bovendien om een complexe verbouwing. De bestaande structuur van het vroegere kantorencomplex wordt niet alleen uitgebreid, maar het volledige volume krijgt een nieuwe buitenschil. In de zone tussen de structuur en de gevel bevinden zich alle trappen. De vormgeving van de structuur van het vroegere kantoorgebouw met verschillende complexe betonstructuren wordt gecombineerd met de nieuwe structuur in gladde betongewelven. Dit gegeven, en het uitgangspunt dat zo goed als alle structuren en alle technieken zichtbaar zullen blijven, zorgt voor een aantal parameters die voor interieurarchitecten een voortdurende uitdaging vormen. Keuzes worden hierop gebaseerd: de betonstructuur wordt zichtbaar gehouden, vloerbekleding blijft neutraal. De accenten worden gelegd in een opvallend kleurgebruik in specifieke interieurelementen, onder meer bij het op maat gemaakt meubilair. Ook het concept van de signalisatie is als kleurrijke leidraad in het project opgenomen. De ultieme test of een concept een sterk concept is, is de periode na de ingebruikname. Dan pas is te zien of de insteek aanvaard wordt. De uitdaging van een complex project is dan ook om een concept neer te zetten dat langere tijd voldoet aan de vragen van de betrokken partijen. The available information is gathered, interpreted until a coherent image is obtained, and the margins are set out for an integrated concept. The challenge of this long-term project is to detect the changing use and create a strong concept, which can provide an answer to the questions of all the stakeholders in the long term. In addition to the substantive component this project is also a complicated renovation. The existing structure of the former office building will not only be extended, but the entire volume will also be given a new building envelope. The stairs are situated in the area between the structure and the façade. The design of the structure of the former office building with several complex concrete structures is combined with the new structure with smooth concrete vaults. This design aspect, and the notion that almost all of the structures and techniques will remain visible, has resulted in a number of parameters which constitute a continuous challenge for the interior architects. Choices are made based on this: the concrete structure will remain visible, the floor covering will be neutral. The accents consist of striking colours for specific interior elements, such as the customised furniture. The signage concept has also been incorporated in the project as a colourful guideline. The ultimate test of whether a concept is a strong concept comes in the period after the building is taken into use. It is only then that you can see whether your approach has been accepted. The challenge of a complex project is to design a concept that will meet the requirements of stakeholders for a longer period of time

Clubhuis, 8. Renbaan Bij de start van een project vragen we onze bouwheren naar de invulling van hun project. Niet naar het programma, maar naar het gebruik ervan. De meeste opdrachtgevers weten immers perfect welke functies ze willen onderbrengen in hun project. Samen denken we na over hoe ze die ruimtes willen gebruiken. Een (interieur)ontwerp vertrekt van koken eerder dan van de keuken. Vaak leidt de opmaak van deze scenario s tot een andere invulling van de ruimtes. Bouwheren krijgen inzicht in hoe ze een ruimte kunnen gebruiken en we leggen samen met hen de grenzen van het gebruik vast. Die grenzen vloeien voort uit het wezenlijk verschil tussen de polyvalentie en de beschikbaarheid van een gebouw. Polyvalentie roept al snel een neutraliteit op de meest makkelijke weg is hier om de ruimte niet in te richten onder het mom van: het kan voor alles gebruikt worden. Door op zoek te gaan naar (de grenzen van) de beschikbaarheid van een ruimte proberen we de beschikbaarheid van deze ruimte te optimaliseren. De Wellingtonsite in Oostende omvat een aantal projecten waarbij deze scenario s van gebruik een grote rol spelen. Een masterplan ligt aan de basis van de renovatie van de Wellingtonsite in Oostende. Het belang van deze historische plek is groot voor de stad Oostende, wat ondermeer bepaald wordt door de ligging: vlak aan zee, vlakbij de Koninklijke Gaanderijen en het historisch belangrijke Thermae Palace. BURO II & ARCHI+I tekende dit masterplan en voerde de renovaties uit in een Tijdelijke Vereniging met Ro Berteloot, nu Arch & Teco. De nieuwe uitbater van het gerenommeerde viersterrenhotel Thermae Palace in Oostende organiseerde een wedstrijd in zijn zoektocht naar een geschikte ontwerper. De volledige site werd ontleed. Als start van dit onderzoek brachten we in kaart hoe hedendaagse verwachtingen van een hotel inpasbaar zijn in een historisch gebouw zonder het onrecht aan te doen. Eén van de vragen was om de circulatiestromen van de hotelbezoekers, wellnessbezoekers en het publiek voor de seminarieruimtes gescheiden te houden, maar onderlinge verbindingen wel mogelijk te maken. Om een correct antwoord te kunnen geven op deze vraag zijn we op zoek gegaan naar het oorspronkelijke ontwerp van het gebouw. Vanuit die analyse en het plaatsbezoek is een circulatiepatroon uitgewerkt die een antwoord gaf op alle vragen die de bouwheer had gesteld. Meer nog: het totaalconcept bood meteen ook een antwoord op het erfgoedvraagstuk. Het vroegere zwembad krijgt in het ontwerp zijn oorspronkelijke functie terug en vormt samen met de zuidelijke vleugel het hart van de wellness. Ook de When we start to work on a new project we ask our principals for more input about their project. Not about the programme, but about how it will be used. Most principals, after all, know exactly which functions they want to incorporate in their project. Together, we think about how they want to use these spaces. A(n) (interior) design starts from cooking, rather than from the kitchen. The development of these scenarios often gives rise to a different use of the spaces. Principals gain insight into how they can use a space and together we set the boundaries of that use. These boundaries are a natural consequence of the essential difference between a building s multifunctionality and its availability. Often multi-functionality implies neutrality the easiest option then is to do nothing with the interior under the excuse that it can be used for anything and everything. By going in search of (the boundaries of) the availability of a space we try to optimise that availability. The Wellington site in Ostend comprises a number of projects in which these user scenarios played a major role. A master plan was designed for the renovation of the Wellington site in Ostend. This historic site is quite important for the city of Ostend, and this, among others, is due to its location: near the sea, near the Venetian Galleries and the historically important Thermae Palace. BURO II & ARCHI+I designed the master plan and implemented the renovations in a temporary association with Ro Berteloot, currently Arch & Teco. The new manager of the renowned four-star hotel, Thermae Palace in Ostend organised a competition to find a suitable designer. The entire site was analysed. We started our research by mapping how a hotel s contemporary expectations can be incorporated in a historic building without doing it an injustice. One of the requests was to separate the circulation flows of the hotel visitors, the wellness visitors and the audience for the meeting rooms, while allowing for interconnections. In order to offer a suitable solution, we started by re-examining the building s original design. Based on this analysis and the site visit we developed a circulation pattern which met all the principal s requirements. Better yet: the integrated design concept also provided an answer to the heritage question. The original function of the former swimming-pool was restored in the design and together with the southern wing makes up the centre of the wellness facility. The galleries will once again be used to connect with the sea and are thus restored to their former function. By opening up the building to the sea again we are restoring the building to its original context. In 34 35
