Met om en bij 2000 personeelsleden vormt het bedrijf in Turnhout het kenniscentrum voor de ontwikkeling en productie van hogedrukgasontladingslampen en metalen componenten. Het bedrijf werkt samen met onderzoekscentra inbinnen- en buitenland voor alle innovaties, van concept tot productie. Bij Philips Lighting Turnhout bundelen specialisten uit verschillende disciplines hun krachten. Ze werken aan innovatieve producten met een hoge toegevoegde waarde in een marktsegment in volle expansie. Hogedrukgasontladingslampen worden wereldwijd toegepast. Meer dan de helft van alle voetbalstadions zijn verlicht door Philips Lighting. Bijna alle Belgische wegen worden verlicht met hogedrukgasontladingslampen uit Turnhout. Ook in het segment van de winkelverlichting is de Turnhoutse vestiging toonaangevend. De kwaliteitsgedachte loopt als een rode draad door alle activiteiten in Philips Lighting Turnhout. Het bedrijf verwierf als één van de eerste in België het label voor milieuzorg. Daarnaast is het ook koploper in verschillende kwaliteitsprogramma s. Met de stad Turnhout onderhoudt Philips Lighting een nauwe band. Actief sinds 1955 is het bedrijf niet alleen een van de grootste werkgevers van de streek, er wordt ook veel belang gehecht aan de relatie met medewerkers en de sociale invloed op de omgeving. 3 Toevoersysteem voor zeer kleine producten The Mechanization department of Philips Innovation Services in Turnhout is divided into several competence groups; process development, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and machine vision and measurement group. The mechanical group consists of engineers with different mechanical competences. Philips Turnhout heeft tientallen jaren ervaring in het bouwen van machines waarmee steeds kleiner wordende producten alsmaar sneller moeten verwerkt worden. De goede werking van deze machines staat of valt met de kwaliteit van de toevoersystemen voor de productonderdelen. Hieraan worden dus steeds hogere eisen gesteld zodat er ook ruimte blijft voor nieuwe ideeën. Assigment: Het bedenken, bouwen en testen van een systeem waarmee zeer kleine specifieke producten gericht aan een machine kunnen worden toegevoerd. 4 Search of a new standard vision camera The Mechanization department of Philips Innovation Services in Turnhout is divided into several competence groups; process development, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and machine vision and measurement group. The mechanical group consists of engineers with different mechanical competences. The Marlin camera from AVT camera supplier is reaching its life cycle. This camera type is the standardized vision camera in Philips Turnhout Lighting factory, within the off/inline measurement systems. Therefore, there is a need for a new standard camera with corresponding drivers and software packages. The goal is to find a camera that fits with the hundreds vision applications that are running in the factory, to develop the needed tools (HW, SW) and to test the camera in one, or several, industrial applications. The assignment consists of: 1. Digital camera supplier inventory 2. Search for the new standard digital camera 3. Implementation of HW and SW components 4. 5 Low cost detection of defects in Quarts glass tubes (study of vision sensors) GTD Mechanization of Philips Innovation Services in Turnhout has a vast experience in industrial, and high-end, vision applications. The alternatives for visual inspection of defects are low-cost vision sensors that can also distinguish good and bad quality products. Generally, a vision sensor can compare and distinguish between good and bad products. For quarts glass, this would be using parameters such as dimension, visual aspects and quality of cutting. Example: crack Knots chips off,305 skewness, 308 protuberance--- it s all about cutting airlines. Is it possible to distinguish closed or open airline? 6 GPU programming for High Performance Inline Measurement System Vision & Measurement Group Introduction : The need of high resolution imaging with multiple images and high speed or real-time processing time has been clear in the new generation of vision inspection systems, such as the inspection of large size OLED panels, where high resolution images and 2D filtering are required for detecting various types of defects. Though current affordable multi-core processors have improved overall performance of vision systems but it is still often not sufficient for high speed and realtime vision applications. It becomes a big challenge to have affordable systems with high performance in computation time and cost. Massively parallel computing based on a general purpose graphics processing unit (GPU) can be a good solution to this challenge: GPU can provide 1 teraflops (1000 gigaflops) execution resource compared to 100 gigaflops of Intel duo-core CPU in With a proper parallel computing algorithm, the processing speed can be more than 40 times faster in some applications. It is maturing to use GPU as a modified form of stream processor with the boost factor that the graphic cards companies such as nvidia and ATI have been also providing APIs using C like languages and/or OpenCL to attract scientists and engineers to make use of this new powerful tool. Project Definition In this project, we aim at building a C/C++/Labview GPU parallel image processing library and demonstrating this library in an existing project with the following targets: 1. Investigate a good parallel image capturing and processing hardware and software structure. 2. Collect, evaluate, and build library of frequently used image processing operations: 2D Filtering, FFT, Wavelet analysis and so on. 3. Integrate nvidia CUDA/OpenCL interface into one of the existing V&M projects with a friendly and repeatable manner. 4. Redesign and reimplement one of the existing projects in a manner of parallel GPU computing using results of 1-3. 7 Optimalization of PLC-PC communication via Ethernet for Siemens PC s Philips Innovation Services, Electrical Engineering A. Introduction: For communication between Siemens-PLC and PC application programs written in Labview and C + +, there is currently a limited implementation available: - For one Ethernet protocol : ISO-on-TCP - In one direction only : PLC takes initiative to communicate - No built-in debugging tools B. Goal : Examining which protocol is best choice for fast and robust communications. - Based on standard Ethernet - Based on Profinet Implement the protocol so that the communication from both the PLC and the PC can be initiated, and this on different platforms (Siemens S7/Labview/C + +). Implement the necessary debug tools - to monitor the communication - that assists in rapid diagnosis in case of problems. C. Investigate the possibilities to use PROFINET for communication between PLC and PC: - PROFINET works on IO-base. Figuring out what mechanism based on IO is possible. - Can PROFINET use the existing Ethernet adapter of a PC? What is the performance? - Which PCI Express cards are available? Cost? - Implementation in Labview/C++ from a chosen PROFINET-card. D. 8 On line monitoring Xenon verbruik Productie-unit SON OB; HID outdoor Bij de productie van hogedruk natriumdamp gasontladingslampen worden de ontladingsbuizen (burners) met een bepaalde hoeveelheid Xe als startergas gevuld. Dit gebeurt in een gesloten kamer (oven) waarin de buizenen zich bevinden en die volledig wordt gevuld met (zuiver) Xe-gas aangevoerd vanuit een gascilinder op hoge druk. Vervolgens worden de buizen gasdicht gesmolten waarna het overtollige gas dat zich nog in de oven bevindt wordt afgepompt. Dit gerecupereerde gas wordt opgevangen in een gesloten vat (gascilinder). De hoeveelheid gas dat per cyclus wordt verbruikt, is afhankelijk van het type ontladingsbuis dat wordt geproduceerd. Het reële verbuik van Xe-gas kan bepaald worden a.h.v. verschilmeting gasinhoud cilinder zuivere Xe en gasinhoud cilinder recup Xe. De gasinhoud wordt berekend uit een gewichtsbepaling (cilinders geplaatst op digitale weegschaal). Om het Xe-vebruik te monitoren en te registreren voor verdere analyse, dient een data-acquisitie (uitlezing digitale weegschalen) en data verwerking (monitoring) software toepassing (cfr.
