2 Introductie Ik ontmoette Arno Brandlhuber van b&k+ architecten uit Keulen voor het eerst naar aanleiding van de tentoonstelling ArchiLab, door desingel in 2002 overgenomen uit Orléans. Bij deze gelegenheid overhandigde hij mij een publicatie van zijn bureau die nogal ongewoon oogde. Op de cover van dit kleine, slechts zestien pagina s tellende boekje stond een meisje afgebeeld dat een hertje aan een gele bloem liet ruiken. Binnenin werden, telkens op dubbelpagina s, zeven projecten voorgesteld: aan de linkerkant steeds een foto van een gerealiseerd gebouw, maar zodanig gemanipuleerd dat het als een maquette overkwam, en aan de rechterkant een afbeelding van een inheems dier. Zo stond naast Kölner Brett een vlinder, naast G55 een roodborstje en naast Vaalser Quartier een eekhorentje afgebeeld. Vorm en inhoud waren dusdanig afwijkend van gangbare architectuurpublicaties en van de manier waarop architecten zich gewoonlijk presenteren, dat mijn nieuwsgierigheid naar het werk van dit bureau gewekt was. Zo kwam ik tot de ontdekking dat b&k+ wel vaker eigenzinnige paden betreedt, zowel in hun architectuurpraktijk als in de manier waarop zij deze praktijk publiek maken. Reeds na de oprichting in 1996 van b&k+ realiseerde Arno Brandlhuber samen met zijn toenmalige partner Bernd Kniess een aantal gebouwen. Opvallend bij hun projecten was dat zij binnen de zeer restrictieve Duitse bouwvoorschriften een architectuur verwezenlijkten die aan de ene kant volledig aan de regels voldeed en anderzijds deze regels door de manier van toepassing perverteerde. Een goed voorbeeld van deze conceptuele invalshoek is een van hun eerste realisaties, het woonhuis >256 (1996). Een spatie tussen twee gebouwen in de binnenstad van Keulen van 256 cm breed 1

3 werd met een appartementsgebouw letterlijk en figuurlijk opgevuld. Het bijzondere daarvan is dat dit gebouw geen eigen brandmuren heeft en als het ware constructief tussen de brandmuren van de twee bestaande gebouwen verankerd werd. Op de begane grond leidt een lange gang naar de achterkant en de tuin waar een open trappenhuis de drie appartementen ontsluit. Een andere vroege veelbesproken en meermaals bekroonde realisatie is Kölner Brett. Dit project valt enerzijds op door de ingenieuze ruimtelijke flexibiliteit die door de individuele kopers naar hun eigen behoeftes mede bepaald kon worden en anderzijds door de aan de achtergevel opgehangen ontsluiting met terrassen, tuinen en gemeenschappelijke ruimtes. Realarchitektur en gepolitiseerd landschap, activisme en participatie behoren dan ook tot de sleutelbegrippen binnen de praktijk van dit bureau. Vanaf het begin stelde b&k+ zich op als collectief waarnaar de + in hun naamgeving verwijst dat naar synergie met andere disciplines zoekt. Zo werkten zij regelmatig samen met onder andere Thomas Demand (kunstenaar), Bart Lootsma (schrijver) en Stefan Schneider (componist). Naast het concreet realiseren van bouwopdrachten hecht b&k+ veel belang aan het reflecteren over, het bevragen en het vertalen van architectuur naar diverse media, door middel van onderzoek, uiteenlopende publicaties, cd s, tentoonstellingen, workshops en de oprichting van een opleiding architectuur in Nürnberg ( a42.org Masters of Architecture Nürnberg). In de aanloop naar hun tentoonstelling in desingel lanceerde b&k+ vorig jaar een oproep tot het brede publiek met de vraag om beelden op te sturen van plaatsen waar men het liefst zou willen wonen, de liefde bedrijven of sterven. Aan de hand van het ingezonden beeldmateriaal (meer dan tweehonderd inzendingen waaronder afbeeldingen van een iglo, een boeddhistische tempel, een tuin met een appelboom, een slaapkamer in het koninklijk paleis, een villa in Toscane, een eiland op de Bahama s...) maakte b&k+ samen met de opleiding a42.org van de Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Nürnberg een maatschappelijke analyse die in de tentoonstelling onder de naam New Antwerp als onderzoek in ontwikkeling met statistieken, grafieken en maquettes de wensbare stad van het collectief verbeeldt. De tentoonstelling zelf geeft een gecomprimeerd overzicht van de activiteiten van b&k+ brandlhuber&co, gerangschikt van 0001 (gemeenschappelijke werkruimte, Darmstadt, 1992) tot 0101 (publicatie Brandlhuber / Een Fictie, Antwerpen, 2005). Dit laatste project neemt binnen de tentoonstelling een centrale plaats in. Niet omdat b&k+ eropuit is om bij elke gelegenheid een publicatie te lanceren, maar omdat dit een consequent gevolg is van hun denkwijze om architectuur als een levensnoodzakelijke voorwaarde te definiëren. Tegelijkertijd lanceert die publicatie ook een nieuwe, totnogtoe ongekende standaard binnen de praktijk van architectuurpublicaties. Nadat Rem Koolhaas in 1995 met zijn 1346 pagina s omvattend boek S M L XL furore gemaakt had en hiermee het credo size matters een nieuwe betekenis gaf, en de architecten Herzog & de Meuron in 2002 met Natural History een wetenschappelijke omkadering opeisten, ligt nu voor het eerst een roman over een levende architect klaar, geschreven door de Berlijnse cultuurtheoreticus Martin Burckhardt. 2 3

4 Introduction C est lors de l exposition ArchiLab, reprise d Orléans par desingel en 2002, que j ai rencontré pour la première fois Arno Brandlhuber des b&k+ architecten de Cologne. À cette occasion, il me montra une publication de son bureau, présentée de façon assez insolite : la couverture de ce petit livre d à peine seize pages montrait une fillette faisant sentir une fleur jaune à un faon. À l intérieur, toujours sur doubles pages, étaient représentés sept projets: à la gauche toujours la photo d une construction terminée, mais manipulée de telle façon à paraître une maquette, et à droite l illustration d un animal du pays. Ainsi un papillon figurait-il à côté de Kölner Brett, un rouge-gorge à côté de G55 et un écureuil à côté de Vaalser Quartier. La forme et le contenu étaient tellement différents des publications courantes d architecture et de la façon qu utilisaient les architectes pour se présenter habituellement, que ma curiosité pour le travail de ce bureau fut immédiatement éveillée. C est ainsi que je découvris que ce n était pas la première fois que b&k+ se distinguait par sa singularité tant dans sa pratique d architecture que dans la façon utilisée pour la rendre publique. Dès la création en 1996 de b&k+, Arno Brandlhuber réalisa plusieurs constructions avec son partenaire de l époque, Bernd Kniess. Ce qui était frappant dans leurs projets est qu à l intérieur des normes de construction allemandes très restrictives, ils réalisèrent une architecture qui d une part, se conformait tout à fait aux règles en vigueur alors que d autre part, ils pervertissaient ces règles par leur façon de les appliquer. Un bon exemple de cette approche conceptuelle est une de leurs premières réalisations, la maison d habitation >256 (1996). Un espace de 256 cm de large entre deux bâtiments du centre-ville de Cologne fut comblé -au sens littéral et figurépar cet appartement. Ce qui est remarquable, est que cette construction ne comporte pas de propres murs coupe-feu et qu elle fut de façon pour ainsi dire constructive ancrée entre les deux murs coupe-feu des deux bâtiments voisins existants. Au rez-de-chaussée, un long couloir mène vers l arrière et le jardin où une cage d escalier ouverte dévoile les trois appartements. Le langage formel est industriel et tributaire du modernisme. Une autre réalisation qui fut très vite connue et plusieurs fois couronnée est Kölner Brett. Ce projet se distingue d une part par l ingénieuse flexibilité de la structure spatiale qui put d ailleurs être déterminée par les acheteurs individuels d après leurs propres besoins, et d autre part par l espace situé à la façade arrière comprenant des terrasses, des jardins et espaces communs suspendus. Realarchitektur et paysage politisé, activisme et participation font donc partie des concepts clefs au sein de la pratique de ce bureau. D emblée, b&k+ s est positionné comme un collectif auquel se réfère le + du nom à la recherche de synergies avec d autres disciplines. C est ainsi qu ils ont collaboré régulièrement avec entre autres Thomas Demand (artiste), Bart Lootsma (écrivain) et Stefan Schneider (compositeur). Outre la réalisation concrète de constructions, b&k+ attache beaucoup d importance à la réflexion, le questionnement et la traduction de l architecture vers les divers médias, par le biais de la recherche, de diverses publications, de cd s, d expositions et de workshops ainsi que par la création d une formation en architecture à Nuremberg ( a42.org Masters of Architecture Nuremberg). Au cours de la préparation de leur exposition à desingel, b&k+ a lancé l année passée un appel au grand public en demandant d envoyer des images d endroits idéaux pour vivre, faire l amour ou mourir. À l aide du matériel envoyé (plus de deux cents envois dont des images d un igloo, un temple bouddhiste, un jardin avec un pommier, une chambre à coucher au palais royal, une villa en Toscane, une îles des Bahamas ) b&k+ a réalisé avec les étudiants de a42.org de l Akademie der Bildenden Künste à Nuremberg une analyse sociologique intitulée New Antwerp qui à l occasion de l exposition, présente une recherche de développement étayée par des statistiques, des graphiques et des maquettes du modèle communautaire urbanistique. L exposition elle-même donne une vue générale des activités de b&k+ brandlhuber&co, classifiées de 0001 (espace de travail commun, Darmstadt, 1992) à 0101 (publication Brandlhuber / Een Fictie, Anvers, 2005). Ce dernier projet occupe une place centrale au sein de l exposition. Non pas que b&k+ soit à l affût de la moindre occasion de lancer une publication ; il s agit plutôt de la conséquence logique de leur conception de la définition de l architecture comme étant une condition absolument vitale. En même temps, cette publication lance aussi un standard neuf et jusqu à présent inconnu parmi les publications sur l architecture. Après que Rem Koolhaas ait fait fureur en 1995 avec son livre de 1346 pages, S M L XL, donnant ainsi au credo size matters une nouvelle signification, et que les architectes Herzog & de Meuron aient exigé un encadrement scientifique en 2002 avec Natural History, paraît pour la première fois un roman sur un architecte en vie, écrit par Martin Burckhardt, théoricien berlinois de la culture. 4 5

5 Introduction I first met Arno Brandlhuber of b&k+ architects in Cologne in connection with the ArchiLab exhibition which came to desingel from Orléans in On that occasion he gave me a publication by his firm which looked rather unusual. The cover of this small booklet, with only 16 pages, showed a girl letting a small deer smell a yellow flower. Inside, seven projects were presented, each on a double page: on the left a photo of a completed building, but adapted in such a way that it looked like a model, and on the right an illustration of a native animal. For example, alongside Kölner Brett it showed a butterfly, next to G55 a robin and next to Vaalser Quartier a squirrel. Its form and content was so different from normal architectural publications and from the way architects usually present themselves, that it aroused my curiosity about this firm s work. I thereby discovered that b&k+ often took a course of its own, both in its architectural practice and the way it publicised this practice. Arno Bradlhuber and his then partner Bernd Kneiss had already built a number of buildings shortly after the establishment of b&k+ in The striking thing about their projects was that, against the background of highly restrictive German building regulations, they managed to achieve an architecture which on the one hand complied fully with these rules and on the other perverted them by the way they were applied. A good example of this conceptual approach is one of their first buildings, the >256 house (1996). They literally and figuratively filled a space of 256 cm. wide between two buildings in Cologne city centre with a block of flats. The extraordinary thing about it is that the building has no firewalls of its own and its construction is anchored between those of the two existing buildings on either side. On the ground floor a long passageway leads to the back and the garden where an open staircase provides access to the three flats. The idiom is industrial and owes a lot to modernism. Another early, much-discussed building that won several prizes is Kölner Brett. This project is striking on the one hand for the ingenious spatial flexibility which the individual buyers were in part able to determine according to their own needs and on the other by the terraces, gardens and common areas that opened up the flats and which are suspended from the rear facade. Realarchitektur and a politicised landscape, activism and participation are in fact key concepts in this firm s practice. From the very beginning b&k+ set itself up as a collective to which the plus sign in their name refers that seeks a synergy with other disciplines. They have for example regularly joined forces with Thomas Demand (artist), Bart Lootsma (writer) and Stefan Schneider (composer). In addition to the actual realisation of buildings, b&k+ attaches a great deal of importance to reflection on, inquiry into and the translation of architecture into a variety of media by means of research, a range of publications, CDs, exhibitions, workshops and the establishment of an architectural course in Nuremberg ( a42.org, Master of Architecture, Nuremberg). In the run-up to their exhibition at desingel, last year b&k+ sent out an appeal to the public at large to send in images of the places where they would most like to live, make love or die. More than two hundred people submitted entries, including pictures of an igloo, a Buddhist temple, a garden with an apple tree, a bedroom in the Royal Palace, a villa in Tuscany, an island in the Bahamas, and so on. On this basis b&k+, together with people from the a42.org course at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Nuremberg, carried out a social analysis which in the exhibition represents the collective s ideal city under the name New Antwerp, in the form of a study-in-progress using statistics, charts and models. The exhibition itself presents a condensed survey of the activities of b&k+ brandlhuber&co, arranged from number 0001 (collective workspace, Darmstadt, 1992) to 0101 (the publication Brandlhuber/Een fictie, Antwerp, 2005). This last project occupies a central position in the exhibition. Not because b&k+ is out to launch a new publication for every occasion, but because this is a logical consequence of their way of thinking, defining architecture as an essential condition for life. At the same time this publication sets a new and unprecedented standard in the practice of architectural publications. After the furore Rem Koolhaas made in 1995 with his 1346-page book S M L XL, thereby giving the credo size matters a new meaning, and the architects Herzog & de Meuron had in 2002 demanded an academic frame of reference in their Natural History, here was the first novel about a living architect, written by the Berlin culture theorist Martin Burckhardt. 6 7

6 Werken in de tentoonstelling / oeuvres / works: 1) Oproep / Appel / Public appeal New Antwerp b&k+ brandlhuber&co+ a42.org tafels, 560 x 160 cm / 180 x 160 cm diverse maquettes, monitors, grafieken Afgelopen zomer lanceerde b&k+ samen met desingel een oproep tot het brede publiek om beelden op te sturen van de plaats waar men het liefst wilde wonen / de liefde bedrijven / of sterven. Hierop reageerden honderd eenentwintig personen uit zeven verschillende landen die meer dan tweehonderd illustraties opstuurden. Deze werden als basis gebruikt voor een analyse om een ontwerp van een nieuwe leefomgeving te maken die beter aan de fantasieën en wensen van het collectief beantwoordden. De ingezonden beelden werden zowel kwalitatief als ook kwantitatief geanalyseerd. - De grote tafel representeert het stadsmodel New Antwerp, resultaat van de transformatie of ruimtelijke inplanting van verschillende aspecten van de ingezonden beelden. - In een fotoalbum werden alle ingezonden beelden gearchiveerd. De cijfers hebben betrekking op de verschillende maquettes en diagrammen. - In de Stadsatlas New Antwerp werden de beelden volgens schaal in plattegronden vertaald en volgens gelijkenissen tot een algemene kaart samengevoegd. De verschillende plaatsen en het aantal vermeldingen ervan werden in de vorm van de door Buckminster Fuller ontwikkelde dymaxion-projectie op een wereldbol gesitueerd. - Het cirkelmodel representeert de ideale ruimte van elke inzending op een concentrisch abstracte manier. Op basis van analogieën voegen de meer dan tweehonderd inzendingen zich samen tot de nieuwe totaalruimte New Antwerp. - De dia s op de lichtbakken tonen een selectie van de ingezonden beelden (middelste reeks) met aan de ene zijde illustraties uit de reclame (links) en aan de andere zijde uit het toerisme (rechts). - De iglo is een voorbeeld van de interpretatie en omzetting van de inzending nr 038 naar een typologisch model. De rotsformaties van inzending nr 100 komen overal ter wereld voor. Ze zijn onder de vorm van roze kegels over de maquette verdeeld. - De parkeerplaats staat symbool voor alle ingezonden voorstellen. - De ingesproken tekst bestaat uit fragmenten van reclamecampagnes en vakantiefolders. - De film Themroc (1972, DVD, 104 minuten) van Claude Faraldo functioneert als insert. Deze klassieker binnen het genre van de anarchistische film is een associatieve aanvulling op de genoemde oproep. De arbeider Themroc (Michel Piccoli) heeft op een zekere dag genoeg van zijn monotoon, door derden bepaalde leven. Hij neemt ontslag, maakt zijn zus tot zijn geliefde (Miou-Miou), metselt zijn voordeur dicht en breekt op een andere plaats de muren naar de straat open. Themroc muteert tot holmens zonder ethiek en manieren. De buren zijn eerst geschokt tot ze zijn voor beeld volgen en de hele stad een anarchistische zone wordt Zo komen wij bijvoorbeeld te weten dat: - New Antwerp honderd vijftig keer groter zal moeten zijn dan België; 8 9

7 - bij deze behoefte aan oppervlakte 99% van de mensheid de planeet aarde zal moeten verlaten; - 68% van de mensen hun geboorteland willen verlaten; - de gemiddelde reisafstand naar de geliefkoosde plek 5400 km is; - alle denkbare individuele levenswensen in de reclameen toerisme-industrie reeds vooraf gesuggereerd en beschikbaar zijn. L été dernier, b&k+ a lancé avec desingel un appel au grand public pour envoyer des images de l endroit où l on aimerait le plus vivre/faire l amour/mourir. Cent vingt et une personnes de sept pays différents ont répondu en envoyant plus de deux cents illustrations. Celles-ci ont été utilisées comme point de départ pour analyser le plan d un nouvel environnement de vie qui correspondrait mieux aux rêves et aspirations du collectif. Les images envoyées furent analysées tant du point de vue qualitatif que quantitatif. - La grande table représente le modèle urbain New Antwerp, résultat de la transformation ou de l implantation dans l espace de différents aspects des images envoyées. - Les illustrations envoyées sont toutes archivées dans un album de photos. Les chiffres ont trait aux différentes maquettes et diagrammes. - Dans le Stadsatlas New Antwerp les images ont été traduites à l échelle sur des plans et reprises sur une carte générale d après leurs ressemblances. Le nombre de fois que ces images ont été mentionnées et leurs différentes localisations sont représentés sur un globe terrestre sous la forme de la projection-dymaxion élaborée par Buckminster Fuller. - Le modèle circulaire représente l espace idéal de chaque envoi de manière abstraite et concentrique. Sur base d analogies, plus de deux cents envois s assemblent dans le nouvel espace global New Antwerp. - Sur les écrans, les diapositives montrent une sélection des images envoyées (série du milieu) avec d un côté des illustrations extraites de publicités (à gauche) et de l autre côté du tourisme (à droite). - L igloo est un exemple de l interprétation et de la transformation de l envoi n 038 d après un modèle typologique. Les formations rocheuses de l envoi n 100 se retrouvent partout au monde et sont réparties sur la maquette où elles sont représentées par des cônes roses. - L espace de stationnement symbolise toutes les propositions envoyées. - Le texte enregistré est composé d extraits de campagnes publicitaires et de brochures de vacances. - Le film Themroc (1972, DVD, 104 ) de Claude Faraldo, un classique au sein du cinéma anarchiste est un supplément associatif à l appel susmentionné. Un jour, l ouvrier Themroc (Michel Piccoli) en a assez de sa vie monotone et régie par des tiers. Il démissionne, devient l amant de sa sœur (Miou-Miou), cimente sa porte d entrée et démolit ailleurs des murs donnant sur la rue. Themroc se transforme en homme des cavernes dépourvu d éthique et de manières. D abord, les voisins sont choqués mais ensuite, ils suivent son exemple jusqu à ce que toute la ville se transforme en zone anarchiste C est ainsi qu on apprend par exemple que: - New Antwerp devra être cent cinquante fois plus grand que la Belgique; - qu à cause de ce besoin d espace, 99% de l humanité devra quitter la planète terre; - 68% des personnes veulent quitter leur pays natal; - la distance moyenne vers l endroit rêvé est de 5400 km; - toutes les aspirations de vie individuelles imaginables ont déjà été préalablement suggérées et sont disponibles dans l industrie du tourisme et de la publicité. Last summer b&k+ and desingel made a broad public appeal for pictures of the place where one would most like to live / make love / die. One hundred and twenty-one people from seven countries responded with more than two hundred pictures. They were used as a basis for an analysis leading to a design for a new living environment that corresponded more to the fantasies and desires of the collective. The pictures submitted were analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively. - the large table represents the model city New Antwerp, the result of the transformation or spatial implantation of various aspects of the pictures submitted. - all the pictures sent in were archived in a photo album. The figures refer to the various models and diagrams. - in the New Antwerp City Atlas the pictures were converted into plans 10 11

8 according to scale and were then merged into a general map on the basis of their similarities. The various places and the number of times they are mentioned were marked on the globe of the world in the form of the dymaxion projection developed by Buckminster Fuller. - the circular model represents the ideal space of each entry in a concentric abstract way. On the basis of analogy the more than 200 entries are merged together to form the new total space of New Antwerp. - the slides on the light-boxes show a selection of the pictures submitted (middle series) with on one side illustrations from advertising (left) and on the other from tourism (right). - the igloo is an example of the interpretation and conversion of entry no. 038 into a typological model. The rock formations in entry no. 100 appear all over the world. They are distributed all over the model in the form of pink cones. - the car park is symbolic of all the suggestions submitted. - the voiceover comprises excerpts from advertising campaigns and holi day leaflets. - The film Themroc (1972, DVD, 104 ) by Claude Feraldo. This classic of the anarchist film genre is an associative complement to the abovementioned appeal. On a certain day, the worker Themroc (Michel Piccoli) has had enough of a monotonous life determined by others. He resigns, make his sister his mistress (Miou-Miou), bricks up his front door and knocks a hole through another part of the wall into the street. He mutates into a caveman without ethics or manners. The neighbours are at first shocked but soon follow his example and the whole city becomes an anarchic zone. In this way we learn for example that: - New Antwerp would have to be one hundred and fifty times larger than Belgium - this need for land area would mean that 99% of humanity would have to leave the planet Earth - 68% of people would like to leave their native country - the average distance to the preferred location is 5400 kilometres - every imaginable individual life-wish has in every case been previously suggested or made available by the advertising and tourism industries. 2) Andreas Roth How do you want to live?, x 2000 cm Werk in situ, witte markeerstift op glas Naar aanleiding van de b&k+ oproep concipieerde de Zweedse kunstenaar Andreas Roth voor de tentoonstelling een op vragen en antwoorden gebaseerde tekst tussen twee fictieve personen (de kunstenaar en de architect?). Deze tekst verloopt niet lineair maar als een hypertekst, waarbij elk nieuwe vraag of opmerking meerdere richtingen voor het verdere gespreksverloop creëert. De dialogen vormen clusters met ideeën, meningen, feiten, misverstanden en leugens waardoor de tekst naargelang de leesrichting een andere inhoud krijgt. À l occasion de l appel de b&k+, l artiste suédois Andreas Roth a conçu pour l exposition un texte basé sur des questions et réponses entre deux personnes fictives (l artiste et l architecte?). Ce texte n évolue pas de façon linéaire, mais plutôt comme un hypertexte, où chaque nouvelle question ou remarque crée plusieurs directions qui déterminent le déroulement ultérieur de la conversation. Les dialogues forment des clusters d idées, d opinions, de faits, de malentendus et de mensonges qui confèrent au texte un contenu différent d après le sens dans lequel on le lit. On the occasion of the b&k+ appeal, the Swedish artist Andreas Roth conceived for the exhibition a piece of writing based on questions and answers between two fictional characters (the artist and the architect?). It does not run in a linear fashion but is like a hypertext, whereby every new question or comment creates several directions for the further course of the conversation. The dialogues form clusters of ideas, opinions, facts, misunderstandings and lies, so that the content changes depending on the direction one reads in

De auteur stelde aan de architect voor een roman over hem te schrijven. Algauw werden de rollen tussen auteur en architect verwisseld, hun identiteiten omsluierd, de grens tussen realiteit en fictie vervaagde. Het dubbelzinnige van deze opzet versterkt de psychologische, sociologische, theoretische en soms neurotische dimensie van de dagelijkse praktijk van een architect. Brandlhuber: Een Fictie is tweedelig en bevat naast de tekst van Martin Burckhardt een actueel werkoverzicht van honderd projecten en honderd vijfendertig zwartwitillustraties. Uit de inhoud: waardoor ik me thans in de bizarre situatie bevond dat ik in de biografie van iemand anders ingreep, in die van een Keuls architect, die met een overzichtstentoonstelling van zijn werk werd geëerd omdat hij op een bepaald punt van zijn loopbaan was beland, en die mij, Burckhardt, had gevraagd hiervoor een tekst te schrijven. Niet zo n soort van officiële bewieroking die als theoretisch gezwets de catalogi over architectuur maar al te vaak ontsiert, maar een op zichzelf staand werk. Op het moment dat Brandlhuber mij had gevraagd een tekst te schrijven, was het voor mij duidelijk geworden dat niet de parallelle handeling het belangrijkste was, maar wel de interventie op zich, dat de enige zin van die handeling het ruilen was, een ernstig bedoelde ruil, en dat ik om die reden van Brandlhuber had geëist dat ik als Brandlhuber mocht optreden, zijn existentie als het ware mocht overnemen. Ik wilde Brandlhuber tot Brandlhuber-materiaal, tot een kneedbare stof maken, hem met de mogelijkheid van zijn verdwijnen confronteren. Lorsque Brandlhuber me demanda d écrire un texte, il m apparut clairement que ce n était pas l acte parallèle qui était le plus important, mais plutôt l intervention en soi, que le seul sens de cet acte était l échange, un échange sérieux, et que c était pour cette raison que j avais exigé de Brandlhuber de pouvoir me mettre à sa place, pour ainsi dire reprendre son existence. Je voulais que Brandlhuber se transforme en «matériel Brandlhuber», une matière pétrissable que je puisse confronter à la possibilité de sa propre disparition. Andreas Roth, born in 1965, is an artist and lives in the Swedish city of Göteborg. He studied at the Academy of Art in Valand and has worked with b&k+ on several occasions. Martin Burckhardt, geboren in 1958, woont in Berlijn, is schrijver en cultuurtheoreticus. Naast zijn artistiek werk (hoorspelen, performances) bestudeert hij op intensieve wijze de genealogie van de machine, niet als geschiedenis van de techniek, maar als een vraag van het onderbewuste binnen de cultuur. Outre son œuvre artistique (audiodrames, performances) il étudie de façon approfondie la généalogie de la machine, non pas vu sous l angle de l histoire de la technique, mais sous celui de la recherche de l inconscient au sein de la culture. Martin Burckhardt, born in 1958, lives in Berlin and is a writer and culture theorist. In addition to his artistic work (radio plays and performances) he is engaged in an intensive study of the genealogy of the machine, not in the form of a history of technology, but as a question arising from the subconscious as a part of the culture.
