1 European Day of Jewish Culture 2007 Belgium Programme Sunday 2nd September 2007 Theme TESTIMONIES PROGRAMME Anvers Excursion organisée par le B'nai B'rith dans la province d Anvers sur réservation (tel ) The idea of a European Jewish Heritage route was conceived a few years ago in Strasbourg. Our aim was to show the many aspects and rich variety of the Jewish culture in Europe, and how the threads of Jewish Culture are woven in our social fabric, via schools, synagogues and cemses our Province from its northern point to its southern tip. Throughout, the Jewish people have been an integral part of the artistic, cultural and economic development of the province while at the same time, remaining true to the tenets of Judaism. B nai B rith Antwerpen, together with help from the Province of Antwerp, is delighted once more to invite visitors to share some of the most precious landmarks of our Heritage Route. On September 2nd, the 8th European Day of Jewish Culture, guests are welcome to visit and learn more about some of the most important Antwerp sites In the history of Jewish culture. Outside Antwerp, these include: - The Jewish cemetery, Frechie Stichting at Putte: the final resting-place for many people of the Jewish Community in Flanders. - The first Jeshivah (Talmudic high school) founded in Heide Kalmthout where an important Jewish community settled there up to a quarter of a century ago. The Jewish synagogue, now in a sad state of disrepair, nonetheless remans an important Jewish landmark. The synagogue was officially declared a national monument by the Minister of Culture on 1 June Meanwhile, at its heart, the City of Antwerp itself is really a Jiddisch Stetl, incoporating more than 30 synagogues, 10 Jewish schools, a Jeshivah, several sporting clubs, hospitals and various other institutions. -The Dutch Synagogue, also known as the Synagogue of the Bouwmeesterstraat, an impressive building in grand art-deco style. Inaugurated in 1893, this prayer-house remains a source of pride and joy for the Jewish community. It is one of the monuments that made Antwerp one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.

2 - The Diamond Museum of the Province of Antwerp, located in the Jewish neighbourhood. The Museum is a fine example of the Jewish contribution to Flemish industrial and economic development. Unique in Europe, the Jews have played a leading role in Antwerp s diamond industry for more than a century. - Eugeen Van Miegem Museum. The Museum presents works from this late impressionist many of which show Jewish migrants at the Rijnkaai boarding boats of the Red Star Line bound for the USA. Half a million Jews emigrated to the States via Antwerp. - The Museum of Deportation and Resistance in Mechelen at the Dossin Kazerne. The Museum, with its sombre message, Never Again has become a pilgrimage for people of all faiths. More than Jews were deported from Mechelen to Nazi death camps. The one- day tour following the traces of Jewish heritage across the Province of Antwerp highlights many of the most important landmarks in our neighbourhood. We welcome your visit; we look forward to sharing our heritage with you, and hope that it will be the first of many tours to our proud Province. De kernidee van de Europese route van het Joods Erfgoed ontstond enkele jaren geleden in Straatsburg en heeft als doel de aandacht te trekken op de veelzijdigheid en de rijkdom van de joodse cultuur in Europa. Talrijk zijn de sporen van joodse aanwezigheid: in cultuur en kunst, in economische activiteiten, met synagogen, studiehuizen en begraafplaatsen. De Provincie Antwerpen vormt een uitermate belangrijke schakel in de Europese route van het Joods Erfgoed. De specificiteit van de joodse aanwezigheid in de provincie getuigt van een harmonieuze integratie in de lokale economische, industriële en culturele ontwikkeling, evenwel met een groot respect voor de joodse religie. De Antwerpse route van het Joods Erfgoed doorkruist onze provincie van noord naar zuid. B nai Brith Antwerpen, met medewerking van de Provincie Antwerpen, wil voor de 2de keer een aantal waardevolle ankerpunten laten bezoeken op deze 8ste Europese Dag van de Joodse Cultuur. Op 2 september 2007 zullen de volgende plaatsen toegankelijk zijn voor het publiek en toegelicht: - De begraafplaats Frechie Stichting in Putte Nederland is de laatste rustplaats voor heel wat leden van de Joodse Gemeenschap in Vlaanderen. - In het landelijke Heide-Kalmthout werd de eerste jesjiva (talmoedhogeschool) in Vlaanderen opgericht. Tot voor enkele decennia was er een belangrijke joodse gemeenschap. Het synagoge gebouw, vandaag jammer genoeg in verwaarloosde toestand, is een hoogtepunt in het Joods Cultureel Erfgoed. De Synagoge van Heide-Kalmthout werd op 1 juni 2007 door ministerieel besluit definitief als monument erkend. De stad Antwerpen, is zowaar een echte Jiddische sjtetl, met meer dan 30 synagogen, meer dan 10 joodse scholen, studie- en gebedshuizen. - de Hollandse Synagoge ook genoemd Synagoge Bouwmeestersstraat, zeer indrukwekkend, gebouwd in neomoorse art - deco stijl.ingewijd in 1893, blijft deze gebedsplaats een bron van vreugde en fierheid voor de joodse gemeenschap. Het is een van de mooiste juwelen van de Stad Antwerpen - het Diamantmuseum - Provincie Antwerpen, gelegen in de joodse wijk, een bewijs van Joodse bijdrage aan het Vlaams industrieel en economisch leven, een unicum in Europa. Sedert meer dan honderd jaar spelen Joden een belangrijke rol in de Antwerpse diamanthandel en industrie.

3 - Het Eugeen Van Mieghem Museum stelt werken ten toon van deze schilder, waarvan de meeste werken Joodse landverhuizers voorstellen, die aan de Rijnkaai met de boten van de Red Star Line naar America vertrokken. Honderdduizenden Joden verhuisden naar de Verenigde Staten via Antwerpen. - Het Museum van Deportatie en Verzet te Mechelen in de Dossin kazerne is tegenwoordig een bedevaartplaats met de boodschap : nooit meer dit. Vanuit Mechelen werden meer dan Joden naar de nazi- uitroeiïngskampen gedeporteerd. De Dag van het Joods Cultureel Erfgoed in de Provincie Antwerpen is bedoeld als een verkenning van heel wat waardevolle historische plaatsen in de provincie. The last care for the defunct, the accompaniment to his last rest place, the eternal burial place and the donation of a tombstone are very important laws in the Jewish Faith. A fact is getting to ones last rest place is costing money. Misery and poverty are eventually worsening even more the big gloom. This is why Henrie Frechie had the idea to found a burial society were all Jewish families could affiliate when paying a monthly fee. So the families won t have to pay anything anymore when losing a dear one. The Antwerp Jewish Burial Society was founded March the 16th 1884 in Putte ( Noord Brabant )This happened in the Netherlands were burial grounds are eternal. The defunct, following Jewish laws, shouldn t be troubled in his last rest. The Frechie Foundation remains almost the only non profit making Jewish burial society. The aim of the foundation is to offer to all its Jewish affiliated members a ritual burial. Henri Frechie, founder of the the Antwerp Jewish Burial Society Frechie Stichting, born in Antwerp on September the 12th 1845, was a cigar producer; He became later a innkeeper and translator. He died in Amsterdam on April the 11th 1932 and was buried in Putte. De verzorging van de overledene, de begeleiding naar zijn laatste rustplaats, de eeuwige bodem en en et schenken van de gedenksteen zijn zeer belangrijke geboden in de joodse godsdienst. Het feit is dat sterven ook geld kost, soms is het een onoverkomelijke last. Nood en ellende verergeren meestal noch meer de grote smart. Zo kwam de heer Henri Frechie op het idee een begrafenis vereniging te stichten waar iedere joodse familie er lid kon worden mits een kleine maandelijkse bijdrage. Zodat in geval van overlijden geen betalingen nog moeten gebeuren. Op 16 maart 1884 werd overgegaan tot de stichting in Putte ( Noord Brabant ) van de Antwerpse Israëlitische Begrafenisvereniging. Het gebeurde in Nederland waar de grond eeuwigdurend is. Volgens joodse wetten mag de overledene niet in zijn eeuwige rust gestoord worden. De Frechie Stichting blijft om zo te zeggen de enige joodse begrafenis vereniging zonder winstgevend doel. Het doel van de stichting is een rituele begrafenis te verzekeren aan elke overleden Israëliet van de stichting. Henri Frechie, oprichter van de Israëlitische Begrafenis Vereniging Antwerpen, geboren te Antwerpen op 12 september 1845, van beroep sigarenfabrikant en later herbergier en vertaler, overleden te Amsterdam op 11 april 1932, begraven te Putte op Park B

4 B - le site de Heide Kalmthout Promenade 1. This tour brings us to 5 (Jewish) villas in the Nieuwstraat., the Vinkenhof & the Hachsara. The 5 Villas. Those 5 villas were built by Jewish diamantairs. They stood almost 20 years alone in the middle of the moors. The alley eventualy got the name Nieuwe straat ( the newstreet). The houses there are in the typical fin de siècle cottage style. Villa Vinkenhof. This villa was build by architect Vincke as holyday residence. This villa was later purchased by Mendel Kornreich, a leading diamantair who was at basis of the initiative to build a synagogue in Heide. The villa was occupied during W.W. II by the Germans. The building was after the war a resting place & an agricultural school for young Shoa survivors wanting to emigrate to the Holy Land. Promenade 2. This tour brings us to the Synagogue in the Leopoldstreet. At the end of the 19th century Jewish Antwerpian diamantairs build plenty of Jewish villas as well as Jewish hotels and shops in the Heide neighbourhood. Some residents decided to construct a synagogue due to the strong need of a prayer place. The Synagogue of Heide was inaugurated in 1929 and was thereafter the place of the first Jeshivah (Jewish Talmudic high school) in Belgium. The Jewish settlement in Heide had is golden age in the period between the 2 World Wars. The decline came after the Shoa due to sufferings inflicted to local Jewish residents. The Synagogue (which since June the 1st 2007 is recognised by the autorithies, as a protected national monument thanks to efforts by provincie deputy Ludo Helsen ) came in the news again due to Monuments Day in An action group Synagogue Heide was formed to protect and renovate this monument which is the only remaining Village Synagogue in Europe. Individuele en groepsbezoeken. Twee korte wandelingen worden voorzien, die de Joodse aanwezigheid in Kalmthout perfect belichten. Bezoekers ontvangen aan het infopunt een routebeschrijving. Op regelmatige tijdstippen zijn er wandelingen onder leiding van een gids. WANDELING 1 Deze wandeling brengt ons naar de 5 ( Joodse ) villa s in de Nieuwstraat (nrs ), het Vinkenhof en het gebouw van de hachsjara. De vijf villa s : Deze vijf villa s werden gebouwd door Amsterdamse Joodse diamantairs. Bijna 20 jaar lang stonden deze vijf huizen op een rij temidden van de heide. De straat kreeg trouwens de naam Nieuwe straat! Zij vertonen een typische Fin de siècle architectuur: voornamelijk cottagestijl

5 Villa Vinkenhof Deze villa werd in 1910 gebouwd door arch. Jozef VINCKE als zijn buitenverblijf. Later verkocht hij de villa aan Mendel KORNREICH, een zeer sociaal bewogen man, die een grote rol zou spelen in de diamantnijverheid en tevens een initiatiefnemer was voor de bouw van de synagoge. In Villa Vinkenhof was er van 1938 tot 1943 in een van de bijgebouwen een hachsjara. Na de oorlog diende het huis als een transitplaats voor overlevende joodse jongeren, die ongeveer in groepen van 20 personen naar Palestina trachtten te emigreren. WANDELING 2 Deze wandeling brengt ons naar het sinds 1 juni 2007 definitief beschermde synagogegebouw in de Leopoldstraat nr 20, via de Heidestatiestraat, waar men ook nog (joodse) villa s aantreft in cottage-stijl. Eind 19de eeuw vestigde de zich snel uitbreidende diamantsector rond het Centraal Station in Antwerpen. Niet lang daarna doken ook in Heide gegoede diamantairs op. De wijk Heide nam vanuit Antwerpen snel uitbreiding. Er kwamen pensions, hotels, winkels; vooral tijdens de zomermaanden ging het er druk aan toe. Joden die in Heide verbleven hadden nood aan een gebedshuis. Een aantal families besliste tot de oprichting en de bouw van een synagoge. Het gebouw werd in 1928 opgetrokken en in 1929 ingewijd. Het werd voor de eredienst gebruikt tot in In 1929 nam de eerste jesjiva van België heel even zijn intrek in de synagoge, daarna was het studiehuis in pension Meijer. In 1938 werd met de bouw begonnen van een grote jesjiva in de Leopoldstraat, schuin tegenover de synagoge. In de jaren dertig kende de Joodse gemeenschap hier een grote bloei. De gruwel van de Tweede wereldoorlog trof echter ook deze gemeenschap. Open Monumentendag 2002 bracht het gebouw terug in het nieuws. Een werkgroep met gedreven vrijwilligers werd samengesteld. Zij verenigden zich vanaf 2005 Synagoge Heide. Met de steun van Monumentenwacht Provincie Antwerpen vzw, het Departement Cultuur en de Dienst Erfgoed van het Provinciebestuur onder leiding van gedeputeerde Ludo Helsen, bekwam de vzw de definitieve bescherming van het gebouw. Het synagogegebouw is voortaan een erkend monument. De synagoge is een blijvende herinnering aan de vroegere Joodse inwoners in Heide- Kalmthout. Hun geschiedenis zal er na renovatie op verschillende manieren in woord en beeld gebracht worden. In fact, the diamond district in the city centre, an area of barely one square kilometre, has played a leading role in the diamond trade for more than 500 years. What better reason then for the Diamond Museum, a Province of

6 Antwerp initiative, to draw special attention to the city s inextricable links with diamond in its revamped and now even more stylish home. Following its makeover, the Diamond Museum can now take a fresh look at the wondrous world of the hardest and most fascinating stone in the world which can be transformed into a dazzling diamond jewel, brilliantly cut by Antwerp craftsmen: an ANTwerp story that is now more brilliant than ever! Periodical update The Diamond Museum is Antwerp s first and so far only interactive museum. The story of diamonds is brought to life here as a multimedia total experience comprising rare photographs and extracts from its sound and film archives. An interactive museum requires a periodical overhaul for which the Province of Antwerp is setting aside an additional 400,000 euros so that this can be done every four years. Location and raison d être The main innovation introduced during the 2006 makeover is an additional display area known as the Welcome Wing 360, where an audiovisual introduction sheds light on the role of the Diamond Museum in Antwerp from a cultural and historical point of view and on the so-called Diamond Heritage of Antwerp city and province. Visitors are also given a short written guide/index to the story of diamond. As visitors will learn, it is no accident that the Diamond Museum is based in the metropolis of Antwerp and in the immediate vicinity of the diamond district, the hub and heart of the diamond trade and industry - an aspect of its social heritage the Diamond Museum is determined to safeguard. The makeover has also literally opened up the museum onto the Koningin Astridplein where Antwerp s Central Station is located and around which Antwerp s diamond trade developed. Consequently the bond with the diamond district has been strengthened, anchoring the museum in the area and underlining its raison d être. The fascination of diamond Alterations have been made to the structure of some parts of the museum display, such as the chapter on The fascination of diamond, thereby streamlining the diamond story and bringing it up to date. More than 2000 years ago, Indian rulers wore diamonds as talisman and to make themselves invincible, but the new kings of our modernday society also flaunt magnificent diamond jewels and in so doing perpetuate the status of diamond as a symbol of beauty, love, wealth and power. Film stars at major award ceremonies, sports celebrities, top models on the catwalk they all embody the exclusivity of diamond. The current youth culture is also infatuated by diamonds. ECONOMISCHE CONTEXT Meer dan 50% van de wereldproductie in ruwe diamant, alsook van geslepen edelsteenkwaliteit én industriediamant, wordt in Antwerpen verhandeld en is jaarlijks goed voor een omzet van meer dan miljoen euro. Met de nadruk op al wat schittert, is een bezoek aan het Diamantmuseum vooral een zintuiglijke ervaring waarbij je niet alleen kijkt, maar werkelijk ondergedompeld wordt in de boeiende wereld van diamant. Specialisten, liefhebbers of kinderen: iedereen vindt er de antwoorden die hij/zij zoekt. Bovendien verrast het Diamantmuseum haar publiek in de schatkamers met een prachtige collectie juwelen. De bezoeker maakt er kennis met het diamantjuweel van de 16e eeuw tot nu. Maar ook hedendaagse, artistieke diamantcreaties komen uitgebreid aan bod. D - la Synagogue Hollandaise de la Bouwmeesterstraat The Central Israêlite Consistory was established right after the independance of the Belgian State. This institution was founded with the aim to promote a Belgian Jewry. Soon afterwards, Antwerp Jews introduced a demand for the right to get a Jewish Temple. On December the 22nd 1891, as the cornerstone of the Dutch Synagogue was laid, members of the board of the Israëlite Community of Antwerp had a very good reason to be proud. The Synagogue was eventually inaugurated on September the 7th 1893, one day ahead the eve of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. This event was a real source of pride for the Jewish community. This brought along too a golden age for the Antwerp Jewry. The Dutch Synagogue, also known as the Synagogue of the Bouwmeesterstraat, an impressive building in grand art-deco style. The many synagogues of Antwerp show a strong Jewish identity. There is a very specific Jewish religious activity in Antwerp. But Jewish activity in the Antwerp economy, industry & finance has developed too Bij de oprichting van de nieuwe Staat België in 1830 werd ook het Centraal Israëlitisch Consistorie in het leven geroepen om een Belgisch Jodendom op te richten. Antwerpse Joden dienden een verzoek in om een tempel te krijgen. Op 22 december 1891 hadden de leden van de raad van bestuur van de Israëlitische Gemeente van Antwerpen een goede reden om trots te zijn toen de eerste steen van de Hollandse Synagoge aan de Bouwmeestersstraat werd gelegd. Op 7 september 1893, op de vooravond van Rosj Hashana, het joodse nieuwjaar, werd de synagoge ingewijd. Het betekende een echte opluchting voor de joodse gemeente. Het bracht ook een merkwaardige bloeitijd mee voor het Antwerps jodendom. De stijl van de Synagoge is resoluut Oosters, geïnspireerd door de middeleeuwse synagogen van Toledo en heeft een imposante westfront met peristilium. De gebedsruimte bestaat uit een driebeukige hallevorm met halfronde apsis. Het interieur wordt vooral bepaald door de monumentale aron, bergplaats van de Thora. De verschillende Synagogen van Antwerpen zijn een teken van de bewustwording van de joodse identiteit. 8 E -EUGEEN VAN MIEGHEM ( ) MUSEUM Eugeen Van Mieghem Museum, Beatrijslaan 8, 2050 Antwerp - Left Bank Tel. 03/ In recent years the work of the Antwerp artist Eugeen Van Mieghem has been rediscovered internationally (exhibits in Geneva, Berlin, New York and Amsterdam). Born in the old port, Van Mieghem was confronted with the harsh reality of life at the waterfront. Around 1900 he watched the Jewish East-European emigrants leave for the New York and made unique drawings and pastels about their last moment before the departure with the ships of the Red Star Line. In European social art of the turn of the century, international art critics compare his work to that of figures like Käthe Kollwitz, de Toulouse- Lautrec and Steinlen. Like the precursor of social art Jean-François Millet, Van Mieghem never had to leave his own environment in search of subjects. The world was on his doorstep... Geboren in de oude Antwerpse haven werd de kunstenaar er van jongs af aan geconfronteerd met het harde leven aan de waterkant. Rond 1900 observeerde hij het komen en gaan van de Oost-Europese joodse emigranten die met de boten van de Red Star Line vertrokken naar New York voor een betere toekomst. Internationale kunstcritici vergelijken zijn werk vandaag met dit van Käthe Kollwitz, de Toulouse-Lautrec and Steinlen. Net als bij de grondlegger van de sociale kunst, Jean- François Millet moest Eugeen Van Mieghem niet op zoek gaan naar mogelijke onderwerpen. Deze historische plaats is tevens een oord van herinnering. Hier, halfweg tussen Brussel en Antwerpen, organiseerden de Nazi s het SS-Sammellager Mecheln, het verzamelkamp voor de deportatie van de Joden van België. Het SS-Sammellager Mecheln is het vertrekpunt van een deportatie zonder terugkeer. Tussen 1942 en 1944 voeren 28 konvooien gevangenen van Mechelen naar Auschwitz in Polen. Twee derde van hen worden bij hun aankomst vergast. Bij de bevrijding van de kampen zijn er nog slechts in leven. De kazerne Dossin was, in de meest letterlijke betekenis van het woord, een wachtkamer van de dood. Het Museum van Deportatie en Verzet toont en vertelt de geschiedenis van de Endlösung in België en in Europa. In het museum komen meerdere onderwerpen aan bod: de moord op bijna de helft van de Joden tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Het verzet van de Joden die aan de deportatie weten te ontsnappen. De hulp en demedewerking van een brede laag van de Belgische bevolking waardoor velen konden ontsnappen aan de Nazi s en hun aanhangers. The Museum of the Deportation and Resistance, in Belgium is established in a place with which it has historical connections: a wing of the former General Dossin de Saint-Georges barracks in Malines. This small Flemish town is located halfway between Brussels and Antwerp where most of the Jews in this country live. This is where the Reich s Security detachment set up its assembly camp. This Sammellager Mecheln was the starting point of a one-way deportation route. Between 1942 and 1944, some 28 convoys of 25,257 prisoners were shipped from Malines to Auschwitz. Two-thirds of them died upon arrival. Of the other third, only 1,207 prisoners survived an inhuman captivity to see the liberation of the Nazi camps. The museum in Malines, a memorial, has been designed as the antechamber of death. Centering on this fatal deportation, it presents the history of the Final Solution in Belgium and in Europe. It allows us to understand how in Belgium nearly one out of two Jews perished during the Second World War. Furthermore, it is not only a museum about the deportation of Belgian Jews, but also about their resistance.
