The conference dinner was hosted by Royal Delft, where 17th century Delftware connected to 21st century O2E Delftware. The EEMCS Faculty made a great start with its MOOCs: Arno Smets kick-started his Solar Energy course with 57, 000 online students; Pasquale Cirillo s Credit Risk Management attracted 22,000 and in round three, Erik Meijer is expected to reach global record numbers with Functional Programming. The MOOC teaching experience is not only very rewarding for the professors, it also boosts their international reputation. Celebrity teachers. Thereby it will improve the quality of our on-campus education too. Another sign of our excellent reputation in education is the double degree programme in Microelectronics signed with Tsinghua University in June. It was a lengthy process that started in 2009, but Kees Beenakker made it happen. Achieving a great reputation requires passion and persistence. The data science research agenda is shaping up nicely. After the great New Year s event, Delft Data Science (www. delftdatascience.tudelft.nl) paved the way to a Collaborative Innovation Center with IBM (the 2nd in Europe) supporting the Amsterdam Advanced Metropolitan Solutions Institute of MIT, TU Delft and Wageningen University with its big data programmes and taking a leading role in research on O2E-effectiveness. Several other research programmes connected to an external university or industry partners, for example Solliance will partner with us in solar energy research, and we are also planning a research centre on Human Disease Model Technologies hdmt (organ-on-chip) with several partners. This is quite a lot to handle, so a special team led by Inald Lagendijk has been created to provide guidance and support to such activities. And last but not least, Birna van Riemsdijk and Mark Veraar were each awarded a Vidi grant. Great news, boosting our research reputation. n Dankzij TU Delft s goede naam op het gebied van open & online onderwijs werd de eerste edx-conferentie buiten Boston in Delft gehouden. Delft Data Science timmert aan de weg: TU Delft is door IBM erkend als een Collaborative Innovation Center, DDS ondersteunt het Amsterdam Advanced Metropolitan Solutions Institute en leidt het onderzoek naar de effectiviteit van open & online onderwijs. Ook binnen andere programma s is samenwerking met externe partners geïnitieerd: zonne-energie gaat samenwerken met Solliance en er komt een onderzoekscentrum voor organ-on-chip-technologie. Een speciaal team o.l.v. Inald Lagendijk gaat dit soort activiteiten ondersteunen. Photo Annelies te Selle Positive vibes on first EEMCS Research Day We should do this more often Permanent Committee for Academic Practice members Marcel Reinders, Geert Leus and Paul Bauer look back on a successful first EEMCS Research Day. On a glorious day in May about sixty researchers gathered in the rurally located Art Centre Delft for the first EEMCS Research Day. The event was initiated by the Permanent Committee for Academic Practice (Vaste Commissie voor de Wetenschapsbeoefening). We realised that researchers know little about the activities of other groups, potentially resulting in missed opportunities for joint projects, says Committee Chair Marcel Reinders. In our view, collaboration can only be enabled and facilitated, not forced. People need to actually meet each other and discover common interests. This is why we decided to organise a Research Day, along the lines of Education Day. After conferring with the Faculty management team, we limited the event to an afternoon focusing on three attractive research themes with perspectives for the future: Quantum Computing, Smart Cities and Healthy Ageing. An interactive event The themes were introduced by distinguished keynote speakers and discussed in two rounds of three parallel sessions, where EEMCS researchers pitched their own work. At the end of the day the chairmen of the sessions - Geert Leus for Quantum Computing, Cees Witteveen for Smart Cities (replacing Paul Bauer) and Marcel Reinders for Healthy Ageing - reported the results in a plenary closing meeting. As the EEMCS research in these fields is in different stages of development, the discussions were diverse in character, Marcel sums up. Quantum Computing is a new field in our Faculty, so the sessions concentrated on what it is and how to contribute. Smart Cities, a theme that has recently started to develop, is a very broad concept, so here the discussion was taken to a more strategic level, focusing on how to define typical EEMCS research topics. Health is a more common theme at EEMCS, but lacks cohesion. Keynote speaker Frans van der Ouderaa s Vitality concept turned out to be an inspiration as well as a useful umbrella for integrating individual projects. Quantum Computing TU Delft has announced the founding of the Qutech Centre, where the world s first true quantum computer will be built. Leo Kouwenhoven s keynote speech and the pitches by Koen Bertels and Ryoichi Ishihara triggered a lively juli Ineke Temming

4 debate, Geert Leus reports. It gradually became clear what EEMCS can contribute to the new Centre. A quantum computer cannot be built by quantum theory alone, you also need Microelectronics. But Computer Science and Mathematics have a role as well, as the software and algorithms have to be adjusted. People realise that this naturally parallel and powerful kind of computing will have a big impact on our own work. As a consequence, some researchers already expressed an interest in exploring the field, such as cryptography specialist Jos Weber and programming languages expert Eelco Visser. Smart Cities Keynote speaker Haydee Sheombar from IBM gave a clear overview of the opportunities and challenges presented by the multi-faceted Smart Cities theme, while pitchers Laura Ramirez Elizondo, Han Lapoutré and Geert-Jan Houben demonstrated the involvement of all three EEMCS disciplines. Smart Cities has the potential to become one of TU Delft s major research themes, says Paul Bauer. There are many external incentives to conduct research in this field, such as the Amsterdam Smart City project and the European Horizon2020 programme. In the sessions, views were exchanged on how to identify strategic focus areas and create long-term vision. In my opinion, there are great opportunities for university-wide collaboration by developing an integrated design approach where all Smart Cities aspects - energy, ICT, mobility, sustainability - are taken into account right from the start. This could, for example, result in dwellings with rooftop solar panels that are used to power electric cars. Healthy ageing Due to better health care, people are getting much older than before, but not all senior citizens are full of vitality. Frans van der Ouderaa opened our eyes to a whole new aspect of ageing, resulting in new ideas for future projects, says Marcel. Current EEMCS health-related research is mostly medically oriented, covering both diagnostics and treatment, as was shown in the compelling pitches by Wouter Serdijn, Fred Vermolen and Willem-Paul Brinkman. But whether one feels vital is also defined by other factors than one s physical condition, Collaboration can only be enabled and facilitated, not forced like having a social network, hobbies, or a job. In the sessions we explored the possibilities for Vitality-related projects, such as dynamic phenotyping, where relevant bodily functions, such as transpiration, are continuously monitored. We all agreed on one thing: joint projects are only possible if we keep each other informed about our work. The first but not the last We should do this more often, was a frequently-heard reaction during the closing get-together. Rafael Bidarra commented: The atmosphere was very pleasant and there was plenty of opportunity for personal contacts. As a Serious Gaming specialist I have found new inspiration from the Healthy Aging theme. Michiel Pertijs said to have gained a better insight in the potential contributions of EEMCS to the QuTech Centre. As he is working on chips for medical ultrasound, he appreciated hearing more about other healthrelated research in the Healthy Ageing session. Meetings like this encourage collaboration, because they help reveal the hidden links between projects across the Faculty, he said. 5 Photos Annelies te Selle, image processing Scheepens TU Delft Extension School stilt wereldwijde honger naar kennis Een online education engine die aansluit bij de ambities van EWI Rob Fastenau, decaan van EWI en sinds januari ook van de Extension School, vertelt hoe het open en online onderwijs dat aan het TU Delftspectrum wordt toegevoegd ook het reguliere onderwijs ten goede komt. Eén dag per week is Rob Fastenau naast zijn functie als decaan bij EWI ook e-dean. Om online onderwijs te verbinden met het reguliere onderwijs is er bewust voor gekozen de leiding van de Extension School te beleggen bij een decaan van een faculteit. Aangezien EWI bezit over competenties die voor de ontwikkeling van dit innovatieprogramma een betekenisvolle rol kunnen spelen en Rob veel relaties in het internationale bedrijfsleven heeft, is de keuze voor hem niet verwonderlijk. Meer dan MOOC s Er is wereldwijd honger naar kennis en een enorme behoefte om opgeleid te worden; dat online onderwijs daar een belangrijke rol in speelt is inmiddels een gegeven. Niet alleen voor de wereld maar ook voor onze faculteit biedt online onderwijs talrijke kansen. Ik denk dat het goed voor ons is, zowel voor ons onderzoek als voor ons onderwijs, zegt Rob. Met twee spontaan ontwikkelde en zeer succesvolle MOOC s (Solar Energy en Credit Risk Management) heeft EWI zich al stevig op de kaart gezet en er komt in het najaar nog een derde MOOC (Functional Programming) bij. Daar kunnen we heel goed op voortborduren, ook met andere vormen van online onderwijs, aldus de e-dean. Kansen voor EWI Rob benadrukt dat het vinden van de juiste product-markt-combinaties op dit moment één van de prioriteiten is, want online onderwijs is meer dan MOOC s. Waar wij goed en uniek in zijn staat daarbij centraal; alle online onderwijsactiviteiten moeten immers bijdragen aan de versterking van onze wereldwijde reputatie. Het is mijn taak, samen met de directeur onderwijs Ernst ten Heuvelhof, om hier beleid op te maken. Het is zeker niet alleen om reputatie te doen. Online onderwijs levert volgens de decaan ook meer aanwas van campusstudenten op en kan enorm verrijkend werken voor het reguliere onderwijs. Bovendien biedt het EWI ruime kansen op onderzoeksterrein. Er worden big data-technieken gebruikt om efficiënt onderzoek te doen naar de werking van online onderwijs en er vindt onderzoek plaats naar de technologieën om on-campus en online onderwijs aantrekkelijker te maken (zoals software programming, visualisation en graphics). Geoliede machine Over twee jaar moet de Extension School staan: de businessmodellen moeten overdacht zijn en de organisatie moet op orde zijn, als een geoliede machine. Of dat gaat lukken? Het is spannend. We moeten leren wat wel en niet werkt, maar als ik er niet in geloofde was ik er niet aan begonnen. Hoe dan ook is er winst, want volgens Rob geeft dit programma dynamiek aan de TU Delft: mensen zoeken elkaar vanuit de Online onderwijs verrijkt het reguliere onderwijs en biedt ruime onderzoekskansen verschillende faculteiten weer meer op en vinden elkaar in iets dat hen energie geeft. Dat vind ik echt inspirerend, sluit hij af. n Claire Hallewas For one day a week EEMCS dean Rob Fastenau is e-dean of the Extension School, the innovation programme for open and online education, and TU Delft s response to the global thirst for knowledge. Online education has many benefits: it promotes the university s good name, it is good for regular education and for EEMCS it offers research opportunities in areas such as big data science, software programming and visualisation & graphics. Finding the right product-market combinations is one of the priorities. The intention is that the Extension School, which is already resulting in increased interfaculty collaboration, should be established within the next two years. n juli

Meet EEMCS Ambassador Laurentiu Catalin Stanculescu. Laurentiu Catalin Stanculescu is a Master student in the Media and Knowledge Engineering programme and an EEMCS Ambassador. Catalin chose to do a Master in Delft after completing his Bachelor s degree in Computer Science at the University Politehnica of Bucharest in TU Delft is highly ranked, so it provides good value for money, he explains. Why did you become a TU Delft Ambassador? More students should have the opportunity to study abroad, but they often don t apply due to the high expenses. As a student ambassador I can tell interested students about the experience of studying at TU Delft and give information about student grants in the Netherlands. Here you learn to develop critical thinking Why should students from Romania come and study at TU Delft? The university has many research projects and facilities, which makes it a really good place to study. Here at TU Delft you will develop better social skills too. Studying abroad is not just about what you learn: becoming more independent and learning how to deal with different people is the biggest gain. What were the first differences you noticed between Holland and Romania? In the Romanian education system you have to learn and reproduce information. Here you learn to develop critical thinking; nobody really cares about how much you can memorise and that makes exams easier in my opinion. I am also impressed by the close connection between students and professors; in Romania there is a strong hierarchy between these two groups. Did you experience any difficulties due to cultural differences? In the beginning I thought the Dutch were too honest. After the initial shock I thought this is actually a good thing and I embraced it. I even have to adjust when I go back to Romania, where you always have to be careful not to offend others. I (and most international students) also had to become familiar with interactive classes where professors engage students in discussions. Having an opinion is sometimes more important than being necessarily right. What cultural aspect of Romania should the Dutch adopt? In Holland you see too much order, which can be boring. I think from time to time it is good to spice your life with uncertainty. n Als EWI-ambassadeur deelt Laurentiu Catalin Stanculescu, een Roemeense masterstudent, zijn onderwijservaringen met potentiële internationale studenten. Hij roemt de hoge kwaliteit van de opleidingen en de vele onderzoeksprojecten en -faciliteiten. Er zijn grote verschillen tussen het Roemeense en Nederlandse onderwijssysteem, zegt hij. In Roemenië leer je te stampen en te reproduceren en is er een hiërarchische relatie tussen docenten en studenten. In Nederland leer je kritisch na te denken en staan docenten en studenten dichter bij elkaar. Catalin heeft de directheid van de Nederlanders leren waarderen. n 6 Quadraad

7 Claire Hallewas KOMEN en gaan Nynke Penninga Foto Annelies te Selle Nynke Penninga IS financieel projectmedewerker Microelektronica Met alle praktische vragen over financiën en personele inzet bij projecten kunnen onderzoekers en een deel van de afdeling Microelektronica sinds april terecht bij deze extraverte, open en spontane biologe. Met haar step overbrugt ze de afstand tussen wetenschappers en haar werkplek in een uithoek van de laagbouw. Ze vindt het jammer dat ze zo ver weg zit, maar ook rustig. En dat kan prettig zijn wanneer je de cijfers in duikt. Nynke kent de wereld van de wetenschap goed: maar liefst vijf Sicco Verwer IS UD Cyber Security Als tiener was hij voortdurend bezig met computers en programmeren, dus een studie Informatica was een logische keuze. Voor de Joint Strike Fighter deed hij patroonherkenningsonderzoek tijdens een internship bij Lockheed Martin. Hij promoveerde bij Cees Witteveen op algoritmiek in machine learning, wat de rode draad werd van zijn jonge wetenschappelijke carrière. Na zijn promotie ging zijn wetenschappelijke reis via Eindhoven, waar hij zijn postdoc deed en meewerkte aan een NWO-project Sicco Verwer Foto Annelies te Selle Met haar step overbrugt ze de afstand tussen wetenschapper en laagbouw Zijn VENI opende deuren bij de Cyber Security groep van TU Delft universiteiten genoten al van haar bestuurs- en beleidskwaliteiten. Via Groningen, Oxford, Newcastle en Leiden komt ze nu naar Delft. Ze vindt het erg leuk om wetenschappers te ondersteunen bij het najagen van hun passie. Als fanatiek danseres kan ze maar moeilijk stilzitten; in haar vrije tijd ontdekt ze met haar kinderen de omgeving via Geocaching, doet ze een opleiding tot trainer, duikt ze in social media en is ze draagconsulent. Ook wil ze nog leren lassen! Nieuwsgierig? Kom gezellig binnenlopen! n maatschappelijk verantwoord innoveren, naar de machine learning group van Leuven. Werken aan het leren van state-machines bracht hem daarna in Nijmegen, waar hij zich meer en meer bezig hield met machine learning voor Cyber Security doeleinden. De VENI die deze jonge vader daar binnen sleepte opende deuren bij de nieuwe Cyber Security groep van TU Delft. Een mooie kans om zich in het hart van de Security Delta te begeven. Bovendien voelt hij zich thuis in Delft met leuke collega s en enthousiaste studenten. Met de verminderde reistijd hoopt de voormalige DJ ook weer eens tijd te hebben om zijn Lego robot te programmeren. n Since April, Microelectronics researchers can direct their questions about the financial aspects of projects to spontaneous Nynke Penninga, a biologist by education. She uses a kick scooter to travel between her office in the low-rise building and her clients. Nynke knows the academic world very well and loves supporting scientists in pursuing their passion. She loves dancing and Geocaching, and also wants to learn how to weld. Feel free to drop in! n After completing his Computer Science degree, Sicco Verwer conducted research on pattern recognition for the Joint Strike Fighter. He then took his doctoral degree in machine learning algorithmics at EEMCS. Via Eindhoven and Leuven he ended up in Nijmegen where he specialised in machine learning for cyber security. The Veni grant he received here opened doors to the new Cyber Security group at TU Delft. This young father and former DJ hopes the reduced travelling time will give him more time to program his Lego robot. n juli

Photo Annelies te Selle Ineke Temming In February of this year, five TU Delft proposals were granted by NWO and Shell under the Uncertainty Reduction in Smart Energy Systems programme (URSES). Two very different EEMCS projects will receive a total of almost 1.4 million. The fortunate project leaders, Marjan Popov (Intelligent Electrical Power Grids) and Mathijs de Weerdt (Algorithmics), tell us all about it. In retrospect, Tuesday 23 September 2013 was a particularly good day in the career of Mathijs de Weerdt, although it didn t feel that way at the time. I had been working hard on the URSES proposal for over a month. The deadline was set for two o clock that afternoon and the final adjustments kept me busy until the last minute. As tired as I was, that same afternoon at 16:45 I had to convince the Career Development Committee that I was ready to be promoted to Associate Professor. Remarkably, both his endeavours turned out to be successful. Marjan Popov vividly recalls the moment he found out his URSES proposal was accepted. It was on 22 January I d just returned from a Horizon2020 meeting in Düsseldorf late that night and was deadbeat. The good news really refreshed me a lot! Intelligent control system The aim of the URSES programme is to develop the science and tools needed for smart energy systems that can tackle the uncertainty of power supply. Power systems have become more complicated than ever, Marjan explains. Due to the growing trend towards renewable generators it gets harder and harder to maintain a balance between electricity demand and supply, for the simple reason that the sun and the wind are not always available. It is also difficult to predict the voltage and frequency variation. The urgent question is how to monitor, control and protect the European networks of the future in order to decrease the risk of cascading outages and catastrophic blackouts. Power breakdowns are harmful for society and result in costly non-delivery fines for 8 Quadraad

9 utility companies. This is why the Netherlands, following in the USA s footsteps, has just begun installing so-called Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs), vital equipment that collects online data about the electricity system s performance. It is our ambitious objective to create a closedloop wide-area intelligent control system, supported by these PMUs. This will not only provide extensive synchronised information in real time, but will also be able to perform timely corrective actions in case of disturbances, such as generating extra power or disconnecting parts of the system. Energy flow scheduling Mathijs project focuses on a completely different strategy for balancing demand and supply, namely by scheduling the energy flow in advance. Our results will be interesting for large distributed generators, such as greenhouses that use Combined Heat & Power units. As the surplus energy they generate is fed into the local utility grid, they can help prevent transmission congestion during, for example, calm windless weather when a shortage of electricity is anticipated. The idea is that, if the wind Power breakdowns are harmful for society and result in costly non-delivery fines for utility companies shift their schedule and what it will cost them. The greenhouses must be convinced they re better off providing truthful information. To design such mechanisms we will use concepts from Game Theory. Collaboration Power Engineering is sexy again was the eye-catching heading of Mart van der Meijden s article in Quadraad s December 2011 issue. The EEMCS professor of Large-Scale Sustainable Power Systems, also Innovation Manager at TenneT, argued that the many exciting new challenges caused by the radical changes in the energy sector can only be met by interdisciplinary collaboration and partnerships with industry. Both awarded EEMCS URSES projects clearly demonstrate this development. Marjan s project requires expertise in power engineering as well as in telecommunications (including GPS technology), and will be carried out in collaboration with TenneT, the Van Swinden Laboratory and the American consultant Quanta Technology. Mathijs project not only involves Computer Science researchers from his own Algorithm Design group (such as Artificial Intelligence expert Matthijs Spaan), but also from Electrical Power Systems (Laura Ramirez-Elizondo) and the Energy & Industry section of the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management, while it is advised by a User Committee of six companies from the energy sector. TU Delft s PowerWeb is expanding rapidly! n Marjan Popov: PMU Supported Frequency- Based Corrective Control of Future Power Systems Mathijs de Weerdt: Gaming beyond the Copper Plate: scheduling flexible consumption and decentralized generation within distribution constraints is expected to drop at some unknown point during the day, the CHPs are not switched on until that very moment. The greenhouses will, of course, receive a financial compensation for their flexibility of consumption and production. An arrangement like this not only requires planning algorithms that take uncertainty into account, but also rules of play to discourage strategic behaviour among companies. Naast planningsalgoritmen die rekening houden met onzekerheid worden er ook mechanismen ontworpen die strategisch gedrag voorkomen. Beide projecten zijn sterk multidisciplinair en worden in nauwe samenwerking met de energiesector uitgevoerd. n juli

11 Hoogleraar Embedded Software Koen Langendoen, O&S manager Dagmar Stadler en Bioelectronics-student Matthijs Weskin praten na over de laatste editie van de Onderwijsdag, die op 14 april in het Erasmus Expo-en Congrescentrum plaatsvond. Na een boeiende keynote speech door de oud-rector van de Erasmus Universiteit Henk Schmidt, gingen circa 100 docenten en een select groepje studenten actief aan de slag met het onderwerp de ideale relatie tussen docent en student. Zo n breed thema leent zich uitstekend voor een onderwijsdag, zegt Dagmar. Iedereen heeft er wel gedachten over en de verschillende deelaspecten laten zich goed in afzonderlijke workshops uitwerken. Koen en Matthijs, die allebei panelleden waren in de paneldiscussie, blijken nog lang niet uitgepraat over de stellingen. Begeleiden We laten er een aantal de revue passeren. Door het mentorsysteem in het eerste jaar worden studenten te veel gepamperd, luidde de eerste stelling. Koen is het hiermee eens: Het lijkt hier soms net het HBO. Ze moeten wel 45 EC halen, zegt Dagmar. Voorheen signaleerden de studieadviseurs op basis van tentamenresultaten dat het fout ging, maar dan was je al te laat. Matthijs zit bij de 78% van de studenten die persoonlijke aandacht van docenten belangrijk vindt, maar je moet dit volgens hem niet geforceerd organiseren. Niet iedereen heeft dezelfde behoeften, onderwijs is maatwerk. Als studentmentor merkte ik dat verplichte gesprekken en voorgeschreven agendapunten niet werken. Via informele contacten kom je meer te weten. Dagmar geeft aan dat de rolverdeling tussen studentmentor en docentmentor strakker kan: De studentmentor is er voor de eerste opvang, het sociale netwerk en de hulp bij praktische zaken, zodat de docentmentor zich meer inhoudelijk met de studievoortgang kan bezighouden. Inspireren Dan de vraag of 1-op-1-begeleiding een taak is van alle docenten. Volgens Koen heeft een docent daar te weinig tijd voor. Dagmar oppert dat hij voor studenten die individuele aandacht echt nodig hebben wellicht tijd kan creëren door intensiever gebruik van ICT, zoals hoorcolleges op video. Koen kijkt bedenkelijk. Voor de klas staan vind ik juist het leukste onderdeel van onderwijs geven. Het is altijd spannend of je de groep meekrijgt. Ik gebruik allerlei technieken om studenten te inspireren en discussies op gang te brengen. Ik stel vragen, vertel anekdotes, ik daag studenten uit de fout in de slide te vinden of loof prijzen uit voor slimme opmerkingen. Hij voegt eraan toe dat hij vooral een click heeft met studenten die hun mond opendoen, interesse tonen en creatief zijn. De liefde moet wel van twee kanten komen. Matthijs is het niet eens met de stelling dat je juist jonge docenten moet inzetten. Een oudere docent kan net zo goed dicht bij de student staan. Het gaat erom of een docent liefde heeft voor zijn vak. Als dat goed zit, kun je bij zo iemand altijd aankloppen. De liefde moet wel van twee kanten komen Fuikmodel De vijf workshops waaruit de deelnemers konden kiezen gingen over coaching, het ontwerp van leertrajecten, de beïnvloedbaarheid van studiegedrag, motivatiebevordering, en het omgaan met ongewenst gedrag. We hadden dit jaar uitsluitend externe workshopleiders, vertelt Dagmar. Het voordeel van interne mensen is dat ze beter aanvoelen wat voor vlees ze in de kuip hebben, maar het nadeel is dat je in je eigen cirkeltje blijft ronddraaien. Een ander verschil met voorgaande edities is dat we bewust hebben toegewerkt naar concrete deliverables. De Onderwijsdagen zijn altijd succesvol, maar het is onduidelijk wat ervan beklijft. Het programma was daarom opgezet volgens het fuikmodel. Het idee was dat de docenten eerst zouden warmlopen door een enthousiast verhaal, dan zelf aan de bak zouden gaan tijdens de paneldiscussie, vervolgens iets nieuws zouden leren in de workshop, om tot slot per opleiding vast te stellen wat er met de bevindingen in het eigen onderwijs kan worden gedaan. Dat laatste bleek best lastig. Wie een idee heeft hoe dit beter kan: we staan open voor suggesties! n Education Day 2014 was dedicated to the ideal relationship between teacher and student. The many aspects of this broad theme were explored in Henk Schmidt s captivating keynote speech, a lively panel discussion and five parallel workshops - led by external trainers to encourage out-of-thebox thinking. According to E&SA manager Dagmar Stadler, ideally the day would have resulted in concrete to-do lists for the three educational programmes, but this turned out to be difficult. She welcomes any ideas to achieve this goal. Nu kijkt deze voormalig chemisch analist terug op een leuke tijd, met een gezellige club mensen. De veiligheid van onze faculteit was bij hem in goede handen. Trots is hij op de invoering van de inspectiemodule, een digitaal plan van aanpak voor de RI&E (Risico-Inventarisatie en -Evaluatie). Bert is een TU er in hart en nieren, hij geniet van de universitaire wereld en het bijbehorende internationale karakter. Delft verlaten Niet verwonderlijk dat hij in Delft - Natuurkunde - studeerde; zijn ouderlijk huis op de Julianalaan grensde aan de TUcampus. In Rotterdam doceerde hij na zijn afstuderen aan het Sint-Montfort College, maar al snel vertrok hij naar de universiteit. In 86 kwam hij binnen bij Wiskunde; de ontwikkelingen in het vak Informatica trokken hem echter zo aan dat hij na anderhalf jaar de overstap waagde. De opleiding bestond net, ook docenten studeerden 50% van hun tijd om zich het nieuwe vak eigen te maken. Hans leerde de hele TU Hans Geers Foto Annelies te Selle Een andere faculteit is prima, als het maar niet EWI is! Laptops in de zaal verboden doet hij dan ook niet: hij keert terug naar CiTG waar zijn carrière ook begon. Door de praktische techniek is de veiligheidscultuur daar anders en de voeten in de klei - mentaliteit bevalt hem wel. Met zijn hobby s scouting en Geocaching staat hij ook geregeld met zijn voeten in de klei, of op andere bijzondere plekken; het is maar net waar de GPS-coördinaten hem brengen. Dit keer naar de overkant. n programmeren; pas in 90 kregen de faculteiten computers en werden er bij informatica docenten aangesteld. Ook ging hij zich op voorlichting concentreren. De mastercoördinator Computer Science waardeerde zijn vrijheid bij de TU Delft: het was altijd mogelijk nieuwe ideeën uit te proberen. Zijn interactieve colleges werkten van probleem naar oplossing, en waren streng: laptops in de zaal verboden. Nu neemt hij afscheid, om te gaan genieten van kleinzoon en musea. n Seven years ago Bert Meijer was not sure if he would like EEMCS, now he is looking back on a great time there. As Health, Safety and Environmental advisor he is proud of the introduction of the Risk Inventory and Evaluation module. Every inch a TU Delft man, he is not leaving the university, but merely crossing the street to Civil Engineering and Geosciences, where his career began and where he likes the down-to-earth and hands-on mentality. His hobbies are scouting and Geocaching. n Hans Geers joined the Mathematics department in 1986, but soon switched to Computer Science. The CS programme was brand new, and the teachers still had to make themselves familiar with the field. The coordinator of the master programme taught all TU Delft how to program and focused on giving information to prospective students. His teaching method was interactive, problem-based and strict: no laptops allowed. He is looking forward to spending time with his grandson and visiting museums. n 12 Quadraad

EWI-alumni Siem Kok en Elger Lambert, informatici met ondernemingszin en hart voor onderwijs, pitchen de (complementaire) digitale onderwijsplatforms FeedbackFruits, respectievelijk Projectcampus. Siem: De wereld van het hoger onderwijs is drastisch veranderd. Vroeger gingen studenten voor hun boeken naar de bibliotheek, nu halen ze allerlei bruikbare informatie van het internet. Bovendien wisselen ze kennis uit via de social media. FeedbackFruits faciliteert dit nieuwe studeren. Elger: Daar komt bij dat er tegenwoordig veel meer projectonderwijs wordt gegeven. Traditionele leermanagementsystemen, zoals Blackboard, bleken daar niet geschikt voor. Vanuit die behoefte is Projectcampus ontstaan. Parelduiken Siem: Met FeedbackFruits willen we de betrokkenheid en motivatie van studenten bevorderen. Dat doen we door middel van de drie basistools LIVE, DIALOG en SHARE. LIVE is een toepassing voor in grote collegezalen waar interactie met studenten moeilijk is. Docenten kunnen hiermee vragen in hun presentaties opnemen die de studenten met hun smart devices beantwoorden. Zo controleert de docent meteen of de stof aankomt en toetsen studenten hun begrip. De communicatietool DIALOG stelt studenten in staat elkaar te helpen - heel waardevol, want iemand die de stof nog maar pas heeft begrepen is de beste docent. Met SHARE delen studenten studiemateriaal, zoals artikelen of videos, met anderen. Doordat FeedbackFruits de mogelijkheid biedt de belangrijkste passages te markeren en te becommentariëren, ontdekken studenten sneller de parels in de oceaan van beschikbare informatie. Iemand die de stof nog maar pas heeft begrepen is de beste docent Kruisbestuiven Elger: Voor docenten is Projectcampus de ideale omgeving om overzicht te bewaren over de voortgang van projecten die tegelijk lopen. Studenten zien in de loop der tijd een portfolio ontstaan van activiteiten die ze in achtereenvolgende projecten hebben uitgevoerd. Maar het belangrijkste voordeel is dat Projectcampus mensen met gemeenschappelijke interesses weet te binden, doordat het mogelijk is ook andere projecten te volgen. Zelfs mensen van buiten, bijvoorbeeld uit het bedrijfsleven, kunnen worden uitgenodigd mee te kijken en een bijdrage te leveren. Zo faciliteert Projectcampus de kruisbestuiving tussen opleidingen, universiteiten en bedrijfsleven, bevordert het de groei van kennisnetwerken en stimuleert het valorisatie. Via interactieve communicatie, en het delen van bestanden en video s slaagt Projectcampus erin alle stakeholders letterlijk en figuurlijk op dezelfde pagina te krijgen. n EEMCS Computer Science alumni and entrepreneurs Siem Kok and Elger Lambert pitch their trademark products, the digital education platforms FeedbackFruits and Projectcampus respectively. 14 Foto Annelies te Selle Domenico Lahaye wint DIG-it!-innovatie van de maand-prijs De oplossing blonk uit in eenvoud Ineke Temming Een gesprek met Domenico Lahaye, UD bij Numerieke Wiskunde en winnaar van de eerste DIG-it!- innovatie van de maand-prijs, en DIG-it!-projectmanager Susanne Sleenhoff (Valorisation Centre), die de competitie organiseert. In 2009 zocht het bedrijf Almatis, wereldwijd marktleider op het gebied van hoogwaardige specialistische Aluminamaterialen, contact met het Delft Institute for Applied Mathematics. Het verzoek was om het productieproces in een draaiende cementoven zodanig te optimaliseren dat zowel de afvalproductie als het energieverbruik zouden worden verlaagd. Typisch een uitdaging voor wiskundige modellering en numerieke simulatie. Domenico Lahaye en zijn student Michele Pisaroni gingen enthousiast aan de slag. En met succes: uit hun wiskundige model bleek dat er maar een kleine aanpassing nodig was om de oven veel beter te laten lopen. 14 Quadraad

15 Innovatie van de maand Op 20 februari j.l. werd deze toepassing van numerieke wiskunde op industriële processen uitgeroepen tot het meest innovatieve idee van EWI. Dit gebeurde tijdens een pitchcompetitie om de eerste DIG-it!- innovatie van de maand-prijs. 1 In de loop van het jaar kiezen ook de andere faculteiten hun meest innovatieve idee, waarna de facultaire kandidaten het tegen elkaar opnemen in de strijd om de TU-brede DIG-it!-innovatie-van-het -jaarprijs. Susanne Sleenhoff van het Valorisation Centre, die de competitie coördineert: Voorheen was er de Delft Innovation Award, maar die werd maar eens in de twee jaar uitgereikt, vertelt Susanne. We vonden dat te weinig aandacht voor innovatie, want daar wordt aan de TU Delft iedere dag heel veel aan gedaan. Via het programma DIG-it! organiseren we nu het gehele jaar door activiteiten om innovatieve ideeën te stimuleren en voor het voetlicht te brengen. Er bestaat een sterke wisselwerking tussen applicatiegericht en fundamenteel onderzoek DIG-it! De naam DIG-it roept uiteraard associaties op met de voor Delft karakteristieke begrippen digit en digitaal, maar de letters DIG staan ook voor Delft Innovation Galery. Bovendien verwijst dig it naar het spitwerk dat Susanne en collega Danielle Ceulemans verrichten als innovatie-archeologen en naar de ondersteuning die zij bieden om innovatief onderzoek voor leken toegankelijk te maken ( do you dig it? ). Ons motto is Xplore, Xplain & Xpose, licht Susanne toe. We brengen het innovatie-ecosysteem in kaart, bijvoorbeeld via interviews, we helpen onderzoekers hun ideeën te vertalen naar aansprekende verhalen of beelden, en we bieden een platform om die ideeën met de buitenwereld te delen. Dit takenpakket sluit nauw aan bij Susannne s eigen interesse: van huis uit ecoloog, doet zij promotieonderzoek naar hoe mensen kunnen worden betrokken bij technologieontwikkeling, met name in de Biobased Economy. Succesverhaal Voor Domenico is de prijs een erkenning van zijn succesvolle samenwerking met het bedrijfsleven. Bij Almatis is het niet bij dat ene project gebleven. Er zijn weer nieuwe vragen gerezen waarbij onze expertise is ingeschakeld. Nu het gas in Nederland opraakt, krijgt het bedrijf te maken met geïmporteerd gas met een andere samenstelling. Uiteraard beïnvloedt dat de werking van de ovens. Om die te kunnen voorspellen, zijn nog nauwkeuriger modellen nodig. Een andere vraag is wat er gebeurt met het materiaal in de oven - ons oorspronkelijke model ging namelijk uit van een lege oven. Maar ook andere bedrijven met soortgelijke ovens hebben hem inmiddels weten te vinden. En het valorisatiesuccesverhaal is compleet doordat Michele Pisaroni zelf een ingenieursbureau is begonnen. Crossovers Susanne wordt duidelijk vrolijk van deze casus. Maar niet overal verloopt de vertaling van innovatieve ideeën naar concrete toepassingen zo soepeltjes, nuanceert ze. Sommige onderzoekers vinden het moeilijk om relaties aan te knopen met een bedrijf. Of ze hebben een supergaaf idee, maar weten nog niet precies hoe dat gebruikt zou kunnen worden. Daarom organiseren we jaarlijks samen met M&C een dag waarop het innovatiepotentieel van de TU Delft aan bedrijven wordt getoond. Daar zou zelfs Domenico nog leuke nieuwe contacten kunnen leggen, want soms ontstaan er heel verrassende out-of-the-box crossovers. Voor onderzoekers die iets met hun innovatieve idee willen doen ontwikkelt DIG-it! speciale workshops die aansluiten op hun persoonlijke behoeftes, zoals pitchworkshops en innovatie-canvasworkshops. Verder adviseert het Valorisation Centre bij de aanvraag van onderzoekssubsidies of octrooien, en biedt het ondersteuning bij het leggen van contacten met de industrie of de start van een onderneming. Nieuwe wiskunde Het laatste woord is aan de prijswinnaar. Domenico: De oplossing die uit ons model voortkwam blonk uit in eenvoud, maar er lag zeer geraffineerde wiskunde aan ten grondslag. We moeten niet vergeten dat er een sterke wisselwerking bestaat tussen applicatiegericht en fundamenteel onderzoek. De vraag van een bedrijf kun je vaak beantwoorden met bestaande theorieën, maar nieuwe vragen vereisen meestal nieuw onderzoek en nieuwe wiskunde. Dat maakt contractonderzoek voor ons interessant. Bovendien steunen innovaties vaak voor een groot deel op onderzoek dat geen toepassingen heeft. Dus ook dat moet alle ruimte krijgen. n De andere deelnemers waren: Alan Hanjalic, Andrea Ingenito, Bram Ferreira, Claudia Hauff, Eelco Visser en Teun de Groot Domenico Lahaye, Assistant Professor in the Numerical Analysis group, has won the first DIG-it!-innovation of the Month award. The winning innovation is a mathematical model used for optimising a rotary cement kiln at Almatis. Many additional spin-off-activities have emerged, making this a true success story in valorisation. DIG-it! is a new programme to encourage and facilitate innovation at TU Delft. Project manager Susanne Sleenhoff (Valorisation Centre) explains its goals: to map out the university s innovation ecosystem, to help researchers translate their ideas into appealing stories or images, and to offer a platform for sharing these ideas with the outside world. According to Domenico, innovation is a result of the interaction between applied and fundamental research. n juli

16 Keeping all the balls in the air Successful tenure track candidates are skilled jugglers Ineke Temming The lunch meeting for assistant professors on the theme Towards Tenured and Associate Professorship (2 April) revealed a need for more information regarding policy and procedures. Quadraad invited tenure track candidates Dion Gijswijt and Felienne Hermans to exchange questions, answers, experiences and opinions with HR manager Elly Pauw. The key question, asked by Dion, came halfway through the meeting: How many of us are intended to get tenure? Elly s answer seems to come as a surprise. Although we copied the tenure track system from the US, the implementation at TU Delft differs substantially. While at American universities the system is very competitive, here we only deny tenure when someone is clearly not suited for an academic career. People who leave prematurely have usually decided for themselves they ll perform better in other working environments. Another big difference is that all tenured assistant professors with high qualities can be promoted to associate professor, regardless of vacancies. Psychological threshold Nevertheless, Dion and Felienne report there is a lot of insecurity among the candidates. Felienne: Many of us put our lives on hold. Compared to our peers in industry, we have to wait a long time before we can settle down, although we are in a life phase where we want to buy a house and start a family. The prospect of having to relocate yet again is also difficult for our working partners. Dion admits feeling hesitant to buy a house in Delft: It s a psychological threshold that is holding me back. It feels like I m investing a lot in my work, without my commitment being returned. Meanwhile my children are going to school elsewhere, making it harder for me to make the switch. Apart from that, I have a good job that allows me to live the life I want. Probationary period Before the tenure track system was introduced, academics got tenure after a probationary period of two years, Elly recalls. This has now been extended to a maximum of five years, with an extra year to find another position if tenure is denied. Two years turned out to be too short a period to evaluate someone s aptitude for an academic career. Sometimes people were granted tenure for opportunistic reasons. When they Photo Annelies te Selle later turned out to be incompetent, they fell into a career trap, being the last to be selected for promotion and the first to be declared redundant in a reorganisation. The tenure track system, which has been adopted by universities worldwide, offers the institute as well as the candidates the opportunity to assess if someone is in the right place. For TU Delft it s an instrument for improving the quality of its staff and for retaining talent - due to the career perspectives offered -, while it helps employees choose the appropriate career path and avoid frustration. 16 Quadraad

17 departmental management team, who evaluates whether you are still on track. This body also advises the dean on tenure, because we think that locally defined criteria should be decisive in a multidisciplinary Faculty like EEMCS. and managerial skills. According to Felienne there is insufficient information about this (relatively new) programme, which Elly endorses. It s not mandatory, like the University Teaching Qualification, but we strongly encourage Here, we only deny tenure when someone is clearly not suited for an academic career Milestones The programme has been gradually introduced at TU Delft, so it has not yet been uniformly established in all places. Elly: Ideally, it begins with a written agreement with the supervising professor, stating what your activities will be and on what criteria you will be judged. Because TU Delft wants to be a world-class university, all professors are responsible for education, research and valorisation, while they also have to perform organisational tasks. Progress is monitored in the regular Result & Development Cycle. The Midterm Review includes a presentation to the The promotion to associate professor is a separate decision. Under pressure Both candidates feel the pressure of having to keep many balls in the air at the same time. Felienne: There are about 300 first-year students who need computer programming education. Two of our staff members who were teaching full time have just retired, so I m afraid our research will suffer. However, I expect the tenure track agreement to protect me against an excessive teaching workload. As all TU Delft students have to take maths courses, Dion is also heavily (and happily) involved in teaching duties, including the development of new course material. It sometimes worries me that my research is lagging behind. When I joined the Optimization group there were no PhD students for me to supervise, so I first had to secure funding. It would have been great to start with a budget. Personal development Despite all the challenges, they both feel pretty confident. After all, they have already passed the rigorous selection process, they are hardworking and ambitious, and they love every aspect of their job. Dion is participating in the Personal Development Programme, as a means to develop his communication everyone to participate, she explains. It allows you to work on your personal learning targets in a group of candidates from all Faculties, while it also facilitates peer-to-peer review and mentoring by experienced academics. Tenure track is ingesteld om de kwaliteit van het WP te waarborgen en talenten te behouden, maar ook om te voorkomen dat medewerkers in een loopbaanfuik terechtkomen, zegt Elly. Kandidaten worden beoordeeld op van te voren vastgelegde criteria die per afdeling worden bepaald. Aangezien tenure trackers veel ballen tegelijkertijd in de lucht moeten houden, worden ze ondersteund door het Personal Development Programme. n juli

18 Photo Annelies te Selle A valuable contribution to a sustainable future Hossein Khalilnezhad wins Shell BaMa Master Thesis Award 2014 Hossein Khalilnezhad recently won the Shell BaMa Master Thesis Award with his graduation project entitled The Influence of 380 kv AC Underground Cables on the Dynamic Stability of the Dutch Transmission System. Laya Zindel Hossein, born in Iran and living in Delft since 2011, was encouraged to enter the Shell BaMa competition by his supervisor Marian Popov. After the first application round, consisting of writing a non-technical summary of his thesis and producing a flyer, he was one of the three nominees for the Master Thesis Award. The final was exciting: he had to present his research in a two-minute elevator pitch to the jury and the audience, and then answer questions from the jury. The rectors of the four technical Universities in the Netherlands and the Vice President of Shell eventually granted Hossein the Master Thesis Award, because his research contributes to a sustainable future, while also being practical and easy to implement. As Hossein himself puts it: It is not only a theoretical project, TenneT will use the results to answer societal needs. TenneT will use the results to answer societal needs be better to place the transmission grid underground using underground cables. This would remove the visual effects and health issues of overhead lines in densely populated areas. To use this technology in the existing extra high-voltage grid, several technical aspects must be investigated. My research focused on the influence of 380kV underground cables on Dutch grid instability when more cables are integrated. Instability is the main reason for large-scale blackouts in electricity grids. I determined the maximum cable length for minimum risk of blackouts. Academic career Hossein considers the Award to be an acknowledgment of the societal value of his research. It also opened doors to future career opportunities: I had never considered pursuing an academic career, but I was very happy to accept the PhD position that TenneT and TU Delft offered me. Now I have the chance to complete my work in the Cable Research Programme. n Maximum cable length Electricity transmission grids have reached the limits of their capacity and need to be upgraded to keep pace with the rapidly developing energy landscape. This means there is a need for the Dutch transmission System Operator, TenneT, to build new transmission lines to transport huge amounts of electricity over long distances to consumers. Traditionally, grid upgrades are accomplished by building new overhead lines, but this comes with public opposition and negative impacts on health, landscape, etcetera. Hossein: It would therefore 18 Quadraad Hossein Khalilnezhad, masterstudent Electrical Power Engineering, heeft de Shell Bachelor-Master Prijs gewonnen. In zijn afstudeerproject onderzocht hij het gebruik van ondergrondse kabels voor de modernisering van bestaande elektriciteitsnetten. Volgens de jury levert zijn onderzoek een waardevolle bijdrage aan een duurzame toekomst. Hossein heeft een promotieplaats geaccepteerd die mede wordt gefinancierd door TenneT. n

19 Qandid Qamera Qiekjes Inspired by? De inspiratiebron van twee Vidi-grant winnaars Inspired by? The source of inspiration of two Vidi grant winners Vier toponderzoekers van TU Delft ontvingen onlangs een Vidi-subsidie van NWO, waaronder maar liefst twee EWI wetenschappers. Met deze Vidi kunnen zij elk vijf jaar lang onderzoek doen. Quadraad feliciteert Birna van Riemsdijk en Mark Veraar van harte met deze mooie prestatie! Two of the four Vidi grants recently awarded to TU Delft go to EEMCS. Congratulations to Birna van Riemsdijk en Mark Veraar! Birna ontleende tijdens haar voorbereiding voor haar Vidi-interview inspiratie aan de documentaire over het project The Gates (Central Park, NYC), van de kunstenaar Christo en zijn vrouw Jeanne-Claude. Het kostte hen 25 jaar om dit project te realiseren. Het lange-termijn-perspectief inspireerde haar: als het nu niet lukt dan misschien later. Dat bleek voor het project Computational Reasoning for Socially Adaptive Electronic Partners echter niet nodig! If it doesn t happen now, then perhaps later, was Birna thinking when preparing her Vidi interview. The inspiration for this thought came from the artist Christo and his wife; their project The Gates took 25 years to become reality. But for Birna it s happening right now! Photos M&C EWI Józef Marcinkiewicz inspireerde Mark. Deze beroemde wiskundige leefde maar kort, maar heeft in een paar jaar tijd werk verricht dat nu standaard in de analyse en kansberekening is geworden. Marcinkiewicz combineerde als een van de eersten kansrekening en analyse technieken. Mark was bij de conferentie van zijn 100e verjaardag en werkte als Post-doc in Polen, waar Józef vandaan kwam. Dit voorbeeld droeg bij aan het succes van Mark s Vidi voorstel Harmonic Analysis for Stochastic Partial Differential Equations. Mark was inspired by the Polish mathematician Józef Marcinkiewicz, who was one of the first to combine probability theory and analysis techniques. He visited the conference celebrating Marcinkiewicz 100th birthday and worked as a post-doc researcher in Poland. Volgende keer: teamuitjes! 20 Studying swarm robots in the Cyber Zoo Meet Thijs Castelein and Zebro. Thijs is working on a graduation project for The Hague University of Applied Sciences while participating in TU Delft s Electrical Engineering bridging programme. Zebro is a six-legged, beetle-like swarm robot that is able to climb stairs, get over obstacles and navigate through rubble. Since 5 March the Zebros have been sharing a new home with the dragonfly-inspired DelFlies: the Cyber Zoo, a new research and test laboratory for flying and walking swarm robots. In their enclosure of 10 x 10 x 7 metres, located in the aircraft hangar at the faculty of Aerospace Engineering, the robots are free to interact, while cameras precisely measure their position and record every action they take for analysis. Robotic swarms will be able to cover large areas and perform complex tasks in hard to reach places. They can be used to inspect collapsing buildings or find suspicious packages at airports. Cyber Zoo, a part of the interdisciplinary Robotics Institute, was initiated by Guido de Kroon (Artificial Intelligence) and Chris Verhoeven (Microelectronics). Thijs Castelein, student aan de Haagse Hogeschool en deelnemer aan het schakelprogramma voor Electrotechniek, doet afstudeeronderzoek aan de zesbenige, op een kever gelijkende zwermrobot Zebro. Op 5 maart opende het Robotics Instituut de Cyber Zoo, een nieuw onderzoeks- en testlaboratorium voor vliegende en lopende zwermrobots. In hun verblijf kunnen de robots zich vrij bewegen, terwijl camera s continu hun positie bepalen en elke actie vastleggen voor analyse. Robotzwermen zijn bedoeld om complexe taken uit te voeren over grote oppervlakken, zoals het localiseren van verdachte pakjes op luchthavens.
