1 Inleiding Uit het literatuuronderzoek komen twee belangrijke onzekerheden naar voren die op de toekomst van de arbeidsmarkt van de reisprofessional van invloed zijn: de wijze waarop de klant zijn reis organiseert (zelf samenstellen, of afnemen van de reisbranche) en de oriëntatie van de reisindustrie zelf (gericht op de transactie/verkoop of gericht op interactie/relatie). Beide kernonzekerheden zijn afgebeeld op respectievelijk de verticale en horizontale as in onderstaande figuur. De beide kernonzekerheden, met de mogelijke richtingen waarin deze zich zouden kunnen ontwikkelen, vormen de basis voor vier scenario s. Deze hebben de naam webshop, experience center, travel shop en travel bureau gekregen. Op de volgende bladzijden wordt in het Engels een profiel geschetst van elk van deze scenario s die zich in 2025 afspelen met daarbij een aantal vragen. 2 Scenario A. WEBSHOP Schets en belangrijkste kenmerken The consumer composes his holiday himself from the available offer that he finds on internet and has become a producer in its own right. The travel industry offers the required ICT infrastructure that brings together the offer of numerous commodities of different providers. Not travel professionals but friends, fans and followers serve as a filter to select the appropriate offer. The travel industry brings the commodities of different providers together in a web based environment without any personal contact with the customer. The travel industry focuses on the transaction, on the moment of purchase by the customer, and has become a sales business. The information that the WEBSHOP provides is related to what is for sale or for rent and where and how, and to price and quality reviews by customers. Behind the screens (literally and figuratively) the travel industry has a coordinating role in the network of providers of product and price information. Competition between different platforms is driven by completeness and quality of the information, presentation of the information (short search time), price level and speed. Price is dependent on purchasing policy and negotiation power of the travel industry. 4 Scenario B. EXPERIENCE CENTRE Schets en belangrijkste kenmerken The consumer composes his holiday himself from the available offer that he finds in a specific physical marketplace that is provided by the travel industry. A visit to the spectacular experience centre is an event in itself. In the centre different destinations and tour operators jointly present themselves with their offer in a highly technologically sophisticated way. With the help of the latest technology (such as augmented reality) customers are able to taste and to get a tailor made live feel of the destinations and accommodations so that they can experience, compare and purchase what is most appropriate. The centre has an informal setting where consumers tend to return. It looks like a permanent kind of holiday trade show with facilities for food and lodging. Competition is a notion of the 2010 s. Parties are joining forces and invest together in the experience centre. 6 Scenario C. TRAVEL SHOP Schets en belangrijkste kenmerken The consumer is dependent on the travel industry and purchases a complete holiday package that suits his lifestyle. He relies on the expertise of travel professionals and prefers face to face contacts in a physical environment. The travel industry perceives the holiday as a service package that includes both products and services. The travel bureau is a travel shop that provides tailor made packages that meet the needs of the specific and individual wishes of the customer (dynamic packaging). The human dimension is important: employees show empathy, understand their customer, are hospitable, service oriented and make use of their experience and expertise to anticipate customers questions and to help them as well as possible. Not only at the moment of the transaction but year round, by which they try to stimulate loyalty and to build a lifelong relation with the customer. The customer is willing to pay more for such personal service. Competition is driven by the quality of service and reliability. 8 Scenario D. TRAVEL BUREAU Schets en belangrijkste kenmerken The consumer relies on the expertise of travel professionals, is dependent on them and purchases a complete holiday package. The travel industry perceives a holiday as a product package. It focuses on the transaction, on the moment of purchase by the customer, and does not provide any service. The travel bureau has the character of a shop with primarily a sales function and has, in fact, become an extension of existing internet shops. Competition is driven by price, efficiency and visibility. However, it is impossible to compete with the cheap and efficient internet shops.
