EDITORIAAL In maart van dit jaar organiseerde de Lierse afdeling van JCI Jobmatch 2015, een evenement waarop rekruterende bedrijven zich konden voorstellen aan werkzoekenden en waar deze werkzoekenden konden deelnemen aan enkele interessante workshops. 3 INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS HONESTY A value that determines the course of your life PAUL CARREMANS All of us have been confronted with dishonesty at some point in our lives. Some of us had an adulterous partner, others had dealings with business people who lack integrity and ethical values, while others have suffered under the corruption of their country s politicians. When faced with dishonesty, the importance of honesty becomes very clear. WHAT IS HONESTY? When you go for a job interview you sometimes get the question What do you value most in life? My answer is always: Honesty. And that is not without a reason. Honesty is the core value on which many other values are built. One cannot have other people s respect if one isn t honest. One cannot be dependable if one isn t honest. Honesty or the lack thereof will reflect on your personal and business relationships and will positively or negatively impact on your personal brand. This is what you will find when you look up honesty in Wikipedia: Honesty refers to a facet of moral character and connotes positive and virtuous attributes such as integrity, truthfulness and straightforwardness, including straightforwardness of conduct, along with the absence of lying, cheating, theft, etc. Furthermore, honesty means being trustworthy, loyal, fair, and sincere. Psychology Wiki puts it this way: Honesty means simply stating facts and views as best one truly believes them to be. It includes both honesty to others and to oneself, and about one s own motives and inner reality. Honesty is an important element in interpersonal relationships, particularly intimate relationships, and the social perception of dishonesty can seriously undermine judgements of likeability and social attraction, leading to distrust. Character plays a big role in where you go in life. Honesty is considered a characteristic employers look for in candidates. When you are faithful and honest, it shows. In his book The Death of Honesty, William Damon states: Al- though truthfulness is essential for good human relationships and personal integrity, it is often abandoned in pursuit of other life priorities. Damon is a professor of education at the Stanford Graduate School of Education and a leading authority on personal identity and moral commitment in human development. THE INFLUENCE OF RELIGION ON HONEST BEHAVIOUR Both at home and in school, the need for honesty has always been inculcated and if you look at it against the background of my Christian education, one might conclude that religion is at least trying to impose honesty on its followers. This is not only the case with Christianity, but also with other religious groups. Islam orders the Muslim to be honest to himself and others. This order repeatedly comes in the Koran and the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad ( When honesty is lost, then wait for the Hour the Hour referring to the Day of Judgement). Islam orders Muslims to tell the truth even if it is against the teller s interest and orders them not to cheat or deceive other people. A Muslim is ordered by Allah to be honest in his words and deeds, privately and publically alike. So, yes, religion has an influence on honest behaviour! But how effective is this influence? It clearly doesn t stop people from lying, cheating, stealing, committing adultery and other trespasses that 3 are linked to dishonesty. I found a remarkable atheist opinion on the internet. This person said: Truth isn t an opinion and religion is, but religion claims to be the truth. Religious people are therefore incapable of honesty and undermine this fundamental aspect of civilisation. I only follow him in the first sentence of his statement. Because the existence of a God cannot be proven, passing religion off as the truth is dishonest as such. Religion should profile itself as a belief rather than a fact. But saying that religious people are incapable of honesty is taking it a bit too far. I know a lot of religious people who really ARE honest, as I also know many honest atheists. One doesn t have to believe in God to lead an honest life. IS LYING ALWAYS WRONG? If lying is wrong, then why do we tell our children that Santa Claus exists and reindeer can fly? Why don t we just tell them that this is a Christmas gift from Mummy and Daddy? Maybe, like with tumours, there are lies that are malicious and lies that are benign. Have you ever said to your receptionist: If Mr. Smith calls, tell him I m in a meeting? Now that s a lie! But does this lie hurt anybody? Not really! It just buys you some more time to finish that offer that you are preparing for him. Have you ever taken your child to the hospital for surgery and told him: Don t worry! They put you to sleep and afterwards you don t feel anything, knowing that when the sedation wears out it will bloody well hurt? How deceitful of you!

4 INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS But the surgery had to be carried out and your lie helped him to stay calm. If your wife asks you after 30 years of marriage if you think she still has a nice figure and you truthfully answer: Well uh apart from that double chin, those hanging boobs and the fact that you are slightly overweighed, I think you still look great! you might be spending the next couple of nights on the couch. Professor William Damon, whom I have quoted before, says: For a number of reasons, people do not always stick to the truth when they speak. Some of the reasons are justifiable for example, humane considerations such as tact and the avoidance of greater harm. Reassuring an ungainly teenager that he or she looks great may be a kind embroidery of the truth. In a more consequential instance, misinforming storm troopers about the whereabouts of a hidden family during the Nazi occupation of Europe was an honourable and courageous deception. So, yes, one might say that there are circumstances in which little white lies are permissible, but where do we draw the line? If we start from the assumption that not every lie is malicious, won t we encourage ourselves to start making up excuses why this particular lie ranges under the benign category? If we want to be honest with ourselves and with others, we should start by acknowledging that benign lies are rare and the majority of lies are malicious, and that therefore we should refrain from lying as much as we can. WHY DO WE LIE AND HOW CAN WE STOP IT? Anyone who says he never lied is a liar, but that honest people don t like to lie is a fact. So if you consider yourself an honest person, you may want to find a way to avoid lying. But in order to do that, we first have to establish what makes people lie. A first category of liars are the braggers. They like to make themselves look better by lying about their personal finances, their achievements, the number of girls they dated, etc. They also like to exaggerate their involvement in certain events. Other people lie to cover up their bad behaviour. This may be about their drinking habits, their adulterous sexual escapades, or simply a mistake they made at the office. They lie to avoid embarrassment or punishment. If you can anticipate behaviour that embarrasses you or makes you feel guilty, you can avoid having to lie about it. You will be in serious trouble with your partner if he or she finds out that you have been carrying on with someone from the office, but you won t have to lie about it if you don t do it. You are old enough to distinguish between good and bad and if you stay on the straight and narrow the need for lying automatically fades away. You don t have to lie to feel good about yourself if you do things you can be proud of. Don t compare yourself to others. Who cares if your neighbour has a bigger house and drives a more expensive car? Impress people with your honesty rather than with lies that will come out eventually! Avoid putting yourself in a situation where you have to lie for others. If your best friend asks you to tell her husband that she is spending the night with you because you are sick and don t like to be alone and then goes off to be with her boyfriend, politely refuse. I m sorry, Sarah, but I don t want to get involved in your love life! If you want to cheat on your husband, that s your business, but leave me out of it! She might be sore for a while, but your conscious will be clean and isn t it that what counts? Being honest begins with yourself. Appraising your own strengths and weaknesses on a regular basis and working on them may take away the need for lying, because you become more self-confident. You don t need to lie about your achievements if you really have some great achievements to look back on. The company you keep also determines whether or not you will stay honest. If 4 some of your friends are dealing drugs you may have to lie about it at some point, even if you do not participate in their activities. While people who have committed a crime and served their sentence should get a chance to rehabilitate in society, you may want to limit your dealings with them to merely being civil, rather than embracing them as your best friends. You cannot choose your family, but you can choose your friends. Make good use of that! In dealing with dishonest people it is also important to be aware of your own vulnerability to temptation. If you have a lot of married friends who are cheating on their partners, will you also be tempted to be disloyal to yours or do you have strong enough a character not to go with the flow? I once went to a job interview and, while at the toilet, overheard a conversation between the company owner and his right hand executive. The man said: I want to hire this guy! He is perfectly honest and says exactly what he thinks! Later, I was fired by another employer for exactly the same reasons that this man wanted to hire me for. That employer was a businessman with questionable business ethics and I was too honest to carry out orders that went against my own morals. Whether you choose to be honest or not is really your own choice. It may be influenced by your upbringing, religion, or the company you keep, but in the end the choice is yours to make. This article does not intend to moralise. It merely wants to draw your attention to the options you have and how your choice can influence both your personal and business relationships. 5 WERK EN CARRIÈRE ZO WERK JE NAAR JE DROOMJOB TOE PAUL CARREMANS Wat hebben Koningin Victoria van Engeland, President John F. Kennedy, Burggraaf Willy De Clercq, VN Secretaris-Generaal Ban Ki-moon en Prins Albert van Monaco met elkaar gemeen? Allen waren zij ooit lid van de Junior Chamber International. In maart van dit jaar organiseerde de Lierse afdeling van JCI Jobmatch 2015, een evenement waarop rekruterende bedrijven zich konden voorstellen aan werkzoekenden en waar deze werkzoekenden konden deelnemen aan enkele interessante workshops. Ik daarheen! 100 JAAR VAN IMPACT JCI werd opgericht in St. Louis, Missouri in 1915, exact 100 jaar geleden dus. Het is een internationaal netwerk voor de persoonlijke ontwikkeling van ondernemers en ondernemende mensen tussen 18 en 40 jaar oud. Op 40 jarige leeftijd moet men dus uittreden als actief lid, wat wel voor enige commotie zorgde bij de aanwezige 40-plussers. Dit is iets wat van in den beginne in onze statuten staat en waar wij als lokaal bestuur niets aan kunnen veranderen, verdedigde Arne Vanes zich. Arne, die voorzitter is van JCI Vlaanderen, haastte zich uit te leggen dat leden na hun actieve periode ook erelid kunnen blijven. Maar het is vooral de bedoeling dat op die manier zoveel mogelijk jonge mensen de kans krijgen om via onze werking ervaring op te doen en al doende te leren, zei hij. De missie van de organisatie is het aanzetten van jonge mensen tot positieve veranderingen. JCI heeft inmiddels leden wereldwijd en is vertegenwoordigd in meer dan 100 landen op 5 continenten. JCI zet zich in voor maatschappelijke zingeving via projecten die zij opzet binnen haar internationaal zakelijk netwerk. Deze vereniging organiseert bijeenkomsten rond vier pijlers: het individu (training, coaching), de gemeenschap (maatschappelijke activiteiten), internationale bijeenkomsten, en business & networkingevenementen. Wat komt hier voor jullie uit? vroeg ik aan Kenneth De Decker, die instond voor de organisatie van Jobmatch Voornamelijk dat je dingen kan doen die je anders niet doet. Je kan je leiderschap en je organisatorische kwaliteiten aanscherpen in een niet-zakelijke context. Als het een succes wordt zoals het er vandaag naar uitziet heb je daar voldoening van, maar als je met je neus tegen de muur loopt zal niemand je daar op afrekenen. Je kan het dus ergens zien als een vrijblijvende leerschool om je talenten verder te ontwikkelen, waarvan je dan in je beroepsleven de vruchten kan plukken. Bedrijven en officiële instanties hadden hun stand op deze jobbeurs, maar ik was voornamelijk gekomen om de workshops bij te wonen. Laten we dus even gaan kijken wat er daar zoal verteld werd. 10 REDENEN WAAROM JE DE JOB NIET KREEG Tijdens een gesmaakte presentatie bekeek merkstrateeg Stef Verbeeck van Verbeeck + Ujvari waarom jij de job waarvoor je solliciteerde niet gekregen hebt. Ik overloop bondig: 1. Je hebt je huiswerk niet gemaakt. Google is een mooie tool. Gebruik hem! Zoek zoveel mogelijk informatie over het bedrijf waar je gaat solliciteren: hun noden, hun bedrijfscultuur, etc. Kijk ook eens even of je niemand kent die daar werkt, want een inside link is goud waard! 2. Jouw CV sprong niet uit de stapel. Originaliteit doet wonderen. Gebruik vooral geen templates, gezwets of clichés en zet er een professionele foto op. HR mensen willen graag een gezicht op je profiel kunnen plakken. 3. Je motivatiebrief bulkt niet van ambitie. Leg uit waarom jij voor hen onmisbaar bent! Is de pen niet je beste wapen? Dan kan ik je misschien van dienst zijn. Stuur een mailtje naar paulcarremans@ hotmail.com. Een copywriter is slechts een kleine investering, die je er vlug uit hebt. (red.) 4. Je bent onvindbaar via het web. 5 Je kan er gif op innemen dat je toekomstige werkgever je gaat Googlen! In 2013 maakten al 73% van de Belgische rekruteerders gebruik van het web. Zorg dat je op een professionele manier aanwezig bent en dat er geen foto s van jou op het web staan die je liever niet aan je oma laat zien! 5. Je kent je eigen meerwaarde niet. Beoordeel jezelf! Wat is jouw meerwaarde? Wat zou jij willen dat mensen over jou gaan verder vertellen? Wat maakt jou onmisbaar? 6. Je weet niet wat expectancy management_is. Wanneer iemand jou voor professionele doeleinden benadert, heeft hij bepaalde verwachtingen. Heb je een afspraak met je bankier? Dan verwacht je een rijpere man in pak en das. Iemand die vol tattoos staat kan een goed chirurg zijn, maar schept niet direct vertrouwen. Iemand die naar alcohol ruikt doet dat evenmin. 7. Je lichaamstaal zond de verkeerde signalen_uit. Verzorg je houding en let op je lichaamstaal. Probeer eventueel mirroring! Door je houding te spiegelen aan die van je gesprekspartner kan je scoren, zolang je er natuurlijk geen persiflage van maakt. 8. Je etiquettekennis moet worden afgestoft. Bestudeer de bedrijfscultuur om te weten wat men daar op gebied van etiquette verwacht. 9. Je stelde geen interessante vragen. Vragen is interesse tonen. De werkgever is op zoek naar de geschikte persoon voor de functie, maar jij bent ook op zoek naar de geschikte functie in het juiste bedrijf. Jij rekruteert dus ook! 10. Je zou jezelf ook geen job hebben aangeboden. Waarom niet? Omdat je te weinig zelfvertrouwen uitstraalde. Omdat je niet gefocust was op je meerwaarde. Waarde verkoopt!

6 WERK EN CARRIÈRE Heb je in deze opsomming één of meerdere punten gevonden waar jij niet aan voldoet? Werk daar dan aan voor je naar je volgend interview gaat! BURN-OUT Astrid De Zutter van Ucare gaf toelichting bij een fenomeen dat spijtig genoeg meer en meer voorkomt op de arbeidsmarkt: een burn-out. Als je altijd ja zegt tegen extra klusjes en taken, weinig ontspanning neemt, te perfectionistisch, gedetailleerd en loyaal bent, laat gaat slapen en vroeg opstaat, niet gezond eet en slaapmiddelen of andere medicatie neemt, zet je de deur wagenwijd open voor een burn-out, beweerde Astrid. De definitie van een burn-out: Een negatieve aanhoudende gemoedstoestand die verband houdt met werk, die voorkomt bij normale individuen en die gekenmerkt wordt door uitputting, een gevoel van onbekwaamheid, depersonalisatie en disfunctioneel gedrag op de werkvloer. Een burn-out staat niet gelijk aan depressie of overspannenheid, maar wel aan werkgerelateerde stress. Klachten verwijzen naar een onevenwicht in de wisselwerking tussen de persoon en de werksituatie. Bij langdurige stress kunnen ernstige fysieke klachten optreden zoals hogere hartslag, snellere ademhaling, verhoogde spierspanning, een vertraagd immuunsysteem en vertraagde spijsvertering. Enkele gekende oorzaken voor burn-out zijn: je leven en werk zijn niet in balans, je werk is emotioneel belastend, je hebt geen werkzekerheid, je krijgt geen steun of feedback of je ervaart een gebrek aan waardering door collega s of leidinggevenden, je moet teveel multitasken, je hebt geen beslissingsrecht, je lijdt onder voortdurende veranderingen, werk- en tijdsdruk. Het valt op dat loyale, harde werkers vaak de eersten zijn om met een burnout geconfronteerd te worden, zei Astrid. Perfectionisten, idealisten, mensen die altijd eerst de anderen tevreden willen stellen en hun mentale en fysieke grens niet kennen vallen makkelijker aan een burn-out ten prooi. Zij worden besluiteloos, vergeetachtig, onzeker, onverschillig, Zij piekeren constant en zouden liefst van hun probleem weglopen. Vaak grijpen deze mensen naar alcohol, geneesmiddelen, eten of andere verslavingen, wat hen natuurlijk helemaal niet vooruit helpt. Luk Dewulf, co-auteur van Help mijn batterijen lopen leeg formuleert het als volgt: Mensen die een risico lopen op energieverlies en een burn-out zijn over het algemeen toppers. Mensen met een hele hoge motivatie, die het werk zien als belangrijkste bron voor zelfrealisatie. Dat maakt hen kwetsbaar. Vooral als ze zich niet gezien, erkend en gewaardeerd voelen in wie ze zijn en wat ze doen. Want dan gaan ze zich nog harder inzetten. Of ze gaan ertegen vechten. En dat gevecht kost veel energie. Kan je een burn-out voorkomen? Toch wel, zei Astrid. Door bewustwording! Jezelf kennen en jezelf zijn. Door jezelf de vraag te stellen of het team en de structuur waarin je werkt wel bij je past. Door te leren om de symptomen van stress te herkennen en tijdig in te grijpen. Je moet keuzes durven maken, grenzen durven stellen en voor jezelf zorgen. Maar burn-out preventie is een gedeelde verantwoordelijkheid waartoe ook de organisatie haar steentje moet bijdragen. Dat kan door functioneringsgesprekken, waarderende passiegesprekken, coaching, een goede loopbaanbegeleiding, people management, het stellen van haalbare targets en het verhogen van de kennis over burn-out. ONTDEK JE TALENTEN Wie herinnert zich nog het allereerste nummer van PAUL S PYRAMID in de zomer van 2012? In mijn artikel Een functie op maat van de medewerker hadden drie HR-specialisten het over het belang van werken binnen je talenten. Op Jobmatch had Tine De Ceuster van Randstad hierover in haar workshop ook een en ander te vertellen. We moeten een onderscheid maken tussen talenten en competenties, legde ze uit. Talent is iets wat je niet alleen voor je werk gebruikt, maar ook in je vrije tijd. Het is duurzaam. Een talent blijft je altijd bij. Talent heeft een affec- 6 tieve waarde, want het is iets dat je doet met heel je hart. Net daarom kan je met je talent een verschil maken. Een competentie, daarentegen, is gekoppeld aan de organisatie, aan je werk. Het is iets dat je hebt aangeleerd en dat je moet onderhouden. Het is gericht op het behalen van prestaties. Wil je een job vinden waarin jij je talenten kan ontplooien? Dan moet je wel eerst je huiswerk maken! Je begint met een grondige zelfanalyse, raadt Tine aan. Wat kan ik? Wie ben ik? Wat wil ik? Eens je daar volledig uit bent, is het tijd voor een marktanalyse. Wat vraagt de arbeidsmarkt? Dit alles brengt je dan tot de marktbenadering. Hoe krijg ik de job die op mijn lijf geschreven is? Waar ga ik ze zoeken? Hoe kan ik ze vinden? Weet je echt niet wat je talenten zijn? Dan heeft Tine een praktische checklist: Waarvoor vragen jouw vrienden jou? Als men aan een vorige werkgever zou vragen om jou te omschrijven, wat zou die dan zeggen? Waar kan je je uren mee bezig houden? Wie is je grote voorbeeld en waarom? Welke eigenschap van jou zorgt ervoor dat jij zou kunnen overleven op een onbewoond eiland? Wat is je droomjob? Als je die droomjob niet meteen vindt, ga dan iets anders doen, maar gooi je plannen niet weg, adviseerde Tine. Stop ze gewoon in de koelkast en vroeg of laat komt er toch iets uit de bus dat jouw talenten helemaal laat openbloeien. TOT SLOT: NETWERKEN WERKEN! Je slaat een vlotte babbel, wisselt adreskaartjes uit en zoekt elkaar op LinkedIn. En ja, van veel mensen ga je nooit meer iets horen. Maar anderen beginnen jou plots aan te bevelen. Soms schrijft een potentiële klant: Ik heb uw naam gekregen van mevrouw Huppeldepup en dan denk ik: Who the f**k is mevrouw Huppeldepup? Dan moet ik diep gaan graven en kom ik uiteindelijk uit bij iemand waar ik nauwelijks vijf minuten mee gepraat heb. Je hebt echt niet veel tijd nodig om op iemand een indruk na te laten. Het is aan jou om ervoor te zorgen dat het de JUISTE indruk is.

7 WOMEN IN BUSINESS FROM TOMBOY TO VICE-GOVERNOR OF THE NATIONAL BANK OF BELGIUM PAUL CARREMANS When Marcia De Wachter was born, her father was a clerk at the Post Office and her mother a seamstress who stopped working when they got married. Being one of five children, Marcia played mostly with her elder brother Dirk. Maybe that is why she spent most of her childhood dangling from trees, rather than playing with dolls, as girls were supposed to. When she was young private yachts and rest houses were about as remote as the stars. Well, not anymore! This tomboy became a doctor in Applied Economic Sciences and, after working for the Prime Minister, made it to Vice-Governor of the National Bank of Belgium. SPEECH WRITER AND RESEARCHER FOR THE PRIME MINISTER After graduating from the University of Antwerp, Marcia De Wachter worked for two years at this university before going to study in the USA. After her Ph.D. she worked part-time at the University of Antwerp and part-time at the University of Amsterdam; there she made a study for the Dutch Social Economic Council. Back in Belgium she read a series of articles on employment programmes in De Standaard (a much read Flemish newspaper). Marcia called the reporter who was writing that series, told him that she had conducted a study on the subject matter, and asked him if he would be interested in the results. The man came over for an interview, which went very well as Marcia had followed courses on communication and speaking for television. The reporter had already interviewed Frank Vandenbroucke and Johan Van Hecke, two young guys who, years later, would become some of Belgium s top politicians. Together with those two, Marcia had her picture in De Standaard. That s when the former Prime Minister Wilfried Martens called her and asked if she would work for him. I owe it to my communication techniques that I left my academic career for a position at the office of the Prime Minister, says Marcia. Initially I wanted to go for an academic career, but that was the wrong choice. That was not really in line with my talents. The problem is that when young people graduate from college or university, they don t know themselves. The fact that those institutions don t help their students to draft a real profile that reveals their strengths and weaknesses is a lull in the academic system. And because I didn t have highly educated parents who could help me with my choice, I made the wrong one. I should have accepted a proposition I had from JP Morgan when I was still studying in the United States and started a real banking career. It was while working for Wilfried Martens that I realised that I was a do -person. I didn t want to spend years doing figure work like a monk. That s not who I am! I wanted to see results on a daily basis. Marcia s primary tasks at the private office of the Prime Minister was to write his speeches, research the country s competitive position, and work in groups with members representing 7 other ministers. At that time, the Belgian coal mines were being closed, Marcia recalls. Thijl Ghijselinck was coordinating those closures and I took part in those negotiations. I participated in the budgetary follow-up and provided the figures. That was a very hands-on job and always under time pressure. For a while, Marcia was a guest speaker on corporate economy and she also taught informatics. By that time, however, she had a family and those weekly guest lectures took too much of her time. She still does a lot of keynotes though. I really enjoy telling an economic story and presenting my long-term vision, dixit Marcia. The most important thing she learned during her academic career was to structure scientific subjects independently, select those things that can be of interest to the public, find literature on the subject matter, absorb that in a structured way, analyse, collect data, develop software to process those data, and then explain the results in a scientific, yet entertaining way in the form of a book. That s a very tedious job and those skills certainly worked to her benefit when she worked at the private office of Wilfried Martens. A Prime Minster doesn t say: First do this and then do that! He says: I need to know this! Where you find the information is your own problem. Marcia s talent for organising, structuring and persisting helped her considerably throughout her career.

8 WOMEN IN BUSINESS NOT FOR HARD DRIVERS, RISK TAKERS AND ADVENTURERS After the private office of Wilfried Martens, Marcia started working for the National Bank of Belgium. The NBB issues banknotes. When an ordinary citizen needs money he goes to his bank. That bank gets the money from the NBB in exchange for collateral; that way the banknotes start circulating. The NBB also participates in the preparatory work when it comes to establishing monetary policies in Frankfurt. This means collecting all statistics relevant to price developments. The NBB employs numerous statistic specialists and has a research service with 50 top-economists who process these statistics into input that is relevant to contribute to the conception of the monetary policy and, more specifically, determine interest rates, but also to ensure the liquidity of the banks and participate in the daily and weekly transactions with those banks. The NBB also manages a sizeable portfolio with billions of euros, the interest of which benefits the Belgian State and as a result also the Belgian society. They also have their own printing company that prints the banknotes an activity that is supported by an in-house expert centre that has to prevent falsifications. That is something the NBB is a leader in, says Marcia. We are a country of architects in all disciplines: not only construction, interior decoration, etc., but also in IT. Within the Bank we have a very strong team of IT architects and are involved in top projects within the Euro system. Marcia has an army of 260 IT people reporting to her that run very critical applications. Another responsibility of the NBB is prudential supervision. This means that the NBB investigates the liquidity, the solvability, etc. of banks and insurance companies. Asked about the corporate culture of the NBB, Marcia says: Our employees have a very high expertise in their field of business. They are people who are not prepared to take a lot of risks. Especially as these experts have been recruited for their risk aversion. We don t need adventurers in this business! We only have a very small group of people who are really pulling the wagon. Our employees are attracted by the prestige that comes from being a very driven expert in their field, and the ability to bench-mark that expertise on an international scale. When you work at the NBB you are in fact a financial diplomat for your country and that gives a certain satisfaction. It also provides you with a comfortable life, remuneration-wise as well as in the way you travel. Often they are people who don t choose to do the same kind of work for a private bank, because of the opportunities we offer in balancing their family and their career. At the NBB even men take sabbaticals or reduce their work time to 80%. Hard drivers, risk takers and adventurers will not have a satisfying career here. For them, our conservative image is rather dull. But I can tell you that the reality is far from being dull! All my collaborators know that my style is management by wondering around and even the lowest ranking employee knows me. My door is always open to them and everybody calls me Marcia. It is not because the NBB has a conservative image that we apply outdated management principles. MADAM, IT S A PITY THIS IS NO LONGER A MEN S CLUB! Marcia started her career with the National Bank of Belgium as a coordinator. In reality I was the chief of staff of the Governor of the NBB, she explains. That job was pretty much in line with what I did at the office of the Prime Minister. Completely in line with her communication experience, Marcia has also been the NBB s spokesperson. In that capacity she set up a road show to present new products that had been introduced by the Minister of Finance in places like London, Paris, Zürich, Frankfurt, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Brunei. She witnessed the mergers of major Belgian banks from close by. She was there during the 1990 s, when the NBB sold almost 1000 tons of gold in order to qualify as a member of the Euro-system and at the introduction of the euro on 31 st December Her promotion to departmental advisor at the private office of the Governor 8 impacted more on her level within the NBB than it did on her job content. Then she became Secretary-General to the NBB. In that capacity she organised all logistic services for the Executive Committee: the executive secretariat, communications, translation services, and all the practical follow-up. As of that time, she also became the first woman who participated in the Council of Regents, which consisted of 10 members assigned by the government, the 7 board members, and the Secretary-General. The first time I attended a meeting of the Council of Regents, one of the regents greeted me with the words: Madam, it s a pity this is no longer a men s club, says Marcia, thus clearly indicating their lack of enthusiasm. She later joined the Executive Committee as Vice-Governor. The Vice-Governor of the NBB stands in for the Governor when he is abroad or otherwise detained. Because Belgium is a bilingual country, the Vice-Governor will be Dutch speaking if the Governor is French speaking and vice versa. When the French speaking Governor was replaced by a Dutch speaker, Marcia went back to being an ordinary Executive Committee member, as the Vice-Governor had to be French speaking. Marcia is now responsible for prudential supervision and oversight of financial market infrastructures with world players such as Bank of New York Mellon, Euroclear, Mastercard Europe, Atos, Swift, etc. Before she had the HR department and the accounting and budget control department and IT. With her IT department she did the informatics for the entire Bank and also partly for the Banking Commission. For two years she also led a European project that has now been transferred to the ECB in Frankfurt. This project involved creating electronic solutions for the collateral management of all the central banks of each of the 17 Euro countries and was carried out by a team of 70 Belgians and 70 Dutchmen. If you remember that Marcia was raised as one of five children of a one-income family, it is clear that success stories do happen. The life story of Marcia De Wachter shows that with the necessary intelligence, a firm dose of perseverance, and an indispensable stroke of luck, the sky can be the limit.

9 CURSIEFJE ROKERSETIQUETTE Wat ik nog graag zou willen doen is cursiefjes schrijven waarin ik op een humoristische manier vergelijkingen maak tussen vroeger en nu, gezien door de bril van een vijftigplusser. Geïnteresseerde tijdschriften kunnen mij contacteren op PAUL CARREMANS Nadat de dokter je heeft onderzocht gaat hij achter zijn bureau zitten en voor hij zijn briefje schrijft steekt hij eerst een sigaret op. Een jonge moeder is pas thuis met haar baby tje. De hele familie is op bezoek en zit vrolijk te dampen. In een hospitaalkamer haalt een patiënt een sigaret uit het pakje dat klaarligt op het kastje naast zijn bed en belt de verpleegster voor een asbak. Je kan het niet vatten als je het zelf niet hebt meegemaakt. Maar daarvoor moet je toch Abraham al gezien hebben. De laatste decennia is er enorm veel veranderd. Vroeger staken rokers rustig hun sigaret op, waar ze ook waren. Mijn ouders rookten niet, maar als we bezoek kregen haastte mijn moeder zich om een asbak te halen. Een schilder of loodgieter in huis? Die deed zijn werk terwijl een peuk in zijn mondhoek bengelde. Roken was stoer! Met slogans als Er is geen man die niet roken kan deed de tabaksindustrie ons haast geloven dat we mietjes waren als we dat witte stokje niet in onze mond stopten. In elke film rookten Humphrey Bogart en John Wayne er lustig op los. En ook de kinderen werden niet gespaard, want het grassprietje dat tegenwoordig aan de onderlip van Lucky Luke kleeft was vroeger een sigaret. Nu wordt er in geen enkel TV-feuilleton nog gerookt. Alsof er geen rokers meer zijn! Maar ze zijn er! Ze staan buiten aan de deur van het café in weer en wind hun longen te verwennen. Zelfs in hun eigen huis gaan ze op het terras staan om hun gezinsleden niet te hinderen. De arrogante roker is een sociaal voelende roker geworden. Ik herinner mij mijn allereerste baan. Mijn bureau stond tegen dat van mijn baas. Die man gebruikte maar één keer per dag een lucifer. Alle volgende siga- retten stak hij aan met de vorige. Vermits ik recht tegenover hem zat, kwam die rook allemaal mijn richting uit. Ik zat al een heel eind in mijn carrière toen sommige bedrijven het roken op kantoor begonnen te verbieden. Op een dag kwam een interim een afwezige collega vervangen. Zij is maar een halve dag gebleven. Ik hoorde haar naar het uitzendkantoor bellen: Help! Haal me hier weg! Ik mag hier niet roken en ik loop de muren op! Toen kwam er een algemeen rookverbod. Eerst werd dat opgevangen door rookruimtes te voorzien. Daar stonden tafels, stoelen en een telefoon. Wie een sigaretje wou roken ging naar de rokerskamer met een dossier onder de arm en pleegde daar een telefoontje of hield er een bespreking met een eveneens rokende collega. Waarom de meeste bedrijven dit hebben afgeschaft en hun personeel verplichten om buiten te gaan roken, begrijp ik niet. Het komt zeker de productiviteit niet ten goede. Ach, roken! Ik ben er op mijn 53 ste mee gestopt! Wat bewijst dat het verstand niet voor de jaren komt. 10 WRITING FEATHERS FOR SALE A peek at Ghost Writing PAUL CARREMANS Authors, like actors, singers and painters, are artists and there is a certain degree of vanity in each and every artist. They want to see their name under their article, on the big screen, on their painting, etc. Now, ghost writers don t get that kind of recognition. They are publishing under someone else s name. Some writers may have a problem with that. Well, I don t! RECOGNITION I remember how satisfied I was when I first saw my name in print under an article published in a Belgian trade magazine back in Although I had been writing for the member magazines of just about every club or association I ever belonged to, this was my first official publication and it was published by a magazine that was almost compulsory reading for everyone in that specific profession. Then I started writing for a highly renowned British trade magazine with worldwide subscribers. The articles in that magazine were all of very high standard and written by extremely professional people. So I was proud to be accepted as a regular columnist. This and also my much later work for trade magazines in Belgium and The Netherlands, gave me a lot of satisfaction, and yes it was important to see my name under all of these articles. Being identified as the author of those articles gave me recognition, not only as an author, but also as an expert in my trade. NOTHING WRONG WITH TAKING A BACK-SEAT In 1964 Jack Warner asked Julie Andrews to provide the singing voice for Audrey Hepburn in the film version of My Fair Lady. Writing her refusal down to vanity would be doing her grave injustice. After all she had successfully played Eliza Doolittle on Broadway for six years, so it is very understandable that she was hoping that this would be her first performance on the big screen. But as she didn t get to play the part, she was certainly not going to let Hepburn flaunt her feathers! In the end it was Marni Nixon who dubbed Audrey Hepburn. Marni Nixon rarely performed on film (she was Sister Sofia in The Sound of Music), but made a brilliant career out of dubbing the voices of famous nonsinging actresses such as Ingrid Bergman, Margaret O Brien, Marilyn Monroe, Sofia Loren and Nathalie Wood. Does that mean one has to choose either the one or the other? Not necessarily! After all the famous tenor Mario Lanza, who performed in several musicals and operettas, provided the singing voice for Edmund Purdom in The Student Prince. BOUGHT AND PAID FOR I said before that writing is an art. But it can also be regarded as a commercial commodity and that s how I view it 10 when I am hired as a ghost writer. Blogs are very popular nowadays, but the problem with blogs is that everyone can have one! When you write for a magazine the editor-in-chief has to approve your submission, but when you start your own blog you can publish just anything, regardless of your writing skills or your knowledge of the subject matter. Here it is important to distinguish between a mother who starts a blog about her new-born baby or a business professional who wants to share his knowledge with others. Fortunately, most professionals know what they are on about and if their writing skills are not so great, they pay a ghost writer to either refine or completely rewrite the fruits of their research. It is still their name under the article and no one has to know they are not the ones who held the pen. Over the past few years I have been writing blog articles for professionals from the medical and training sectors and I am always willing to expand into other sectors. Lately I ghost wrote articles for different professionals for submission to the reputed magazine of an American university. If those articles pass the selection (they receive hundreds of them) they will be published in the names of my clients. But does it bother me that my clients are flaunting my feathers? Of course not! Remember what I said about writing also being a commercial commodity! Those feathers have been bought and paid for and seeing my clients score with the help of my work is just as satisfactory as seeing my name under that very first magazine article.

11 BEROEPEN IN DE KIJKER SPOTS AAN EN SMILE Het leven van een fotomodel PAUL CARREMANS Prachtige fotoshoots op feeërieke plaatsen in binnen- en buitenland, je foto in tijdschriften, spotjes maken voor TV Hoeveel pubermeisjes zouden daar niet van dromen? Niet zo voor Nathalie Fransen! Zij zag eerder een carrière in een economische richting zitten, maar het lot heeft daar anders over beslist. Wat voor veel meisjes een droom is, is voor haar nu dagdagelijkse realiteit. Nathalie Fransen zat in haar eerste jaar TEW aan de universiteit in Antwerpen toen iemand haar vroeg of ze geen fotomodel wou worden. Ik wandelde gewoon over de Meir toen een scout van een modellenbureau mij aansprak en vroeg of ik modellenwerk zou willen doen, herinnert Nathalie zich alsof het gisteren was. Ik heb dat toen afgekaatst, want ik wou een Master in Toegepaste Economische Wetenschappen halen en model worden was zeker geen ambitie. Het moet zijn dat zij een zeer fotogeniek gezicht heeft, want nog hetzelfde jaar stopte een andere scout haar zijn kaartje toe. Toen dacht Nathalie: Misschien moet ik dat dan toch maar eens proberen. Ze heeft toen meegedaan aan de Flair modellenwedstrijd. Die heb ik niet gewonnen, maar ik heb wel een contract gekregen, vertelt ze. En zo ging de bal aan het rollen. Ik wou toch mijn diploma halen, zegt Nathalie. Dus heb ik die eerste jaren mijn modellenwerk gecombineerd met mijn studies. Dat was niet altijd even gemakkelijk! Voor mij waren dat zware studies. Ik moest daar best wel veel voor studeren. Maar als er een job roept moet je er staan! Daardoor heb ik er wel een jaar langer over gedaan om mijn diploma te halen, maar het is me uiteindelijk wel gelukt. Toen ben ik voltijds modellenwerk gaan doen. Als ik haar vraag welk soort modellenwerk zij doet antwoordt ze met pretlichtjes in de ogen: Geen P-Magazine en geen Playboy! Daar zijn andere modellen voor. Ik heb daar trouwens de lichaamsbouw niet voor. Voor dat soort werk zoeken ze meestal meisjes met een grotere cupmaat. Mijn blik glijdt onbescheiden omlaag en ik lach: Nou ja, het kunnen niet allemaal Pamela Andersons zijn! High fashion doe ik ook niet, vervolgt Nathalie, want daarvoor moet je graatmager zijn en bijna een jongenslichaam hebben. Dat heeft ze nu ook weer niet! Nathalie is een grote, ranke verschijning met een heel mooi gezicht, lange haren en rondingen die niet te groot en niet te klein zijn. Ik heb me meer gericht naar de commerciële jobs, zegt ze. Dat zijn bijvoorbeeld reclamespots voor kledingmerken zoals Zeb of E5-mode. Maar ik werk ook voor automerken zoals Audi, Volkswagen en Toyota, retail bedrijven zoals Carrefour, of bedrijven uit de F&B sector zoals Nespresso en Douwe Egberts. Juwelen en diamanten doe ik ook. Lingerie doe ik bijna niet omdat je daar, zoals eerder gezegd, een bepaalde lichaamsbouw voor moet hebben. Badpakken kunnen nog net daarvoor heb ik pas een shoot gedaan in Italië. Ik ben echt wel bezig 11 met wat ik wel en niet wil. Zo heb ik onlangs een aanbod van Pall Mall geweigerd omdat ik geen producten wil promoten die de gezondheid schaden. Nathalie wil toch nog even kwijt dat model zijn echt wel meer is dan lachen en naar het vogeltje kijken. Ik ben zelfstandige, verduidelijkt ze. Ik moet zien dat mijn boekhouding in orde is, dat mijn portfolio up-to-date is en dat mijn klanten binnen enkele uren een antwoord hebben. Maar wat als haar modellencarrière stopt? Ik heb het geluk dat ik een vrij klassiek gezicht heb, weet ze van zichzelf. Daardoor kan mijn carrière waarschijnlijk heel lang meegaan. Maar op termijn gaat dat minder en minder worden. Vooral als er kindjes komen wordt dat steeds moeilijker te combineren. Nu gaat nog 90% van mijn tijd naar modellenwerk, maar die andere 10% ben ik reeds achter de schermen bezig met productie, het organiseren van shoots, het casten van modellen en het zoeken naar de juiste fotografen. Daar zou ik later in verder willen gaan, maar nu loopt mijn modellenwerk nog heel goed en ik hoop dat dat nog even zo blijft. Ik ben ervan overtuigd, Nathalie! Fotografie: Sage Launa
