5 Voorwoord Dames en heren, Met trots presenteer ik u het 2011 AH-64D Apache Solo Display Team van de Koninklijke Luchtmacht. De Koninklijke Luchtmacht opereert sinds 1996 met de AH-64 Apache en is wereldwijd de eerste en enige luchtmacht die de indrukwekkende mogelijkheden van deze gevechtshelikopters presenteert op zo een unieke manier. Teamcaptain majoor Roland Wally Blankenspoor en zijn team hebben een indrukwekkende show samengesteld, die de manoeuvreerbaarheid van deze gevechtshelikopter toont. Een helikopter die in Irak en Afghanistan in talloze situaties het verschil heeft gemaakt door luchtsteun te verlenen aan zowel Nederlandse als coalitietroepen op de grond. Het team vertegenwoordigt de Koninklijke Luchtmacht tijdens verschillende luchtvaartevenementen in Nederland en in het buitenland. Dit jaar heeft de helikopter een nieuw kleurenschema. Ook is de demonstratie zelf gewijzigd ten opzichte van vorig jaar. Ik ben er van overtuigd dat u het resultaat mooi vindt en dat u de indrukwekkende show zult waarderen. Vliegers majoor Roland Wally Blankenspoor and kapitein Paul Wokkel Webbink werken in nauwe samenwerking met hun twee coaches en vier techneuten in een verenigde inspanning om de doelen van het team te bereiken. Hiermee tonen zij het credo van de Koninklijke Luchtmacht: Eén team, één taak. Het Apache Solo Display Team wordt verder ondersteund door het 301 Redskins squadron en andere onderdelen van thuisbasis Gilze-Rijen. Het team, het squadron en de thuisbasis maken onderdeel uit van het Defensie Helikopter Commando. Geniet van de show en houdt uw camera s en smartphones gereed! The RNLAF operates the AH-64 Apache since 1996 and is the first and only Apache user worldwide that presents the impressive capabilities of this attack helicopter in such a unique and unprecedented way. Teamcaptain major Roland Wally Blankenspoor and his team have created an impressive show routine that is not only stylish, but al so clearly shows the agility and manoeuvrability of this superb attack helicopter. A helicopter that has come to the support of, and made the difference for both Dutch soldiers as well as coalition soldiers on numerous occasions during RNLAF combat operations, both in Iraq as well as in Afghanistan. The team will present the RNLAF both in the Netherlands as well as abroad on several airshows. This year the team operates in a new and attractive paint scheme. Also the show routine itself has changed compared to last year. I am sure that you will like the result and appreciate the spectacular show of the team! 7 Team De Koninklijke Luchtmacht presenteert met trots het Apache Solo Display Team 2011 van het 301 Redskins Apache squadron. Het 301 squadron van het Defensie Helikopter Commando is gestationeerd op vliegbasis Gilze-Rijen. The Royal Netherlands Air Force is proud to present the Apache Solo Display Team 2011 of the 301 Redskins Apache squadron. The 301 squadron of the Defence Helicopter Command is stationed at Gilze-Rijen Airbase. De Koninklijke Luchtmacht is de eerste luchtmacht ter wereld die een Apache Solo Display Team heeft. Dergelijke demonstraties met de Apache helikopter worden doorgaans alleen door de fabrikant (Boeing) verzorgd. De Koninklijke Luchtmacht is dan ook trots een demonstratie te kunnen tonen, waarbij het volledige kunnen van de Apache wordt gepresenteerd. De Apache is te zien in zijn originele camouflage kleur, voorzien van bestickering. Deze bestickering is gemakkelijk te verwijderen en het toestel is daardoor snel weer in te zetten voor operationele missies. Daarnaast is het toestel uitgerust met flares. Deze lichtkogels worden tijdens operationele missies gebruikt om hittezoekende raketten te misleiden. In de show worden ze gebruikt om bepaalde manoeuvres te accentueren. Kijk voor meer informatie op The Royal Netherlands Air Force is the first Air Force worldwide that performs demonstrations with the Apache. Apache demonstrations are normally only performed by the manufacturer of the helicopter (Boeing). The Apache can be seen in its original camouflage colours, equipped with special printing. This printing can be removed quickly, so the helicopter can be used for operational missions when required. The Apache is also equipped with flares, which are normally used to misguide heat seeking missiles. During the demonstration they are used to highlight certain manoeuvres. Te am Introduction 7

8 Apache Solo Display Team Majoor Roland Wally Blankenspoor (38) Dit jaar is majoor Roland Wally Blankenspoor de gezagvoerder en teamcaptain van het demoteam. Wally vliegt sinds 1997 bij de Koninklijke Luchtmacht. Hij vliegt momenteel voor het 301 squadron op vliegbasis Gilze-Rijen en is daar als Hoofd Current Operations verantwoordelijk voor de dagelijkse planning en uitvoering van vliegoperaties binnen het 301 squadron. Als gezagvoerder vliegt Wally de manoeuvres van de demo. Majoor Blankenspoor heeft een ruime vliegervaring van ongeveer 2700 uur, waarvan 2200 op de Apache. Wally is in totaal zes keer op uitzending geweest naar Djibouti en Afghanistan. Major Roland Wally Blankenspoor (38) This year major Roland Wally Blankenspoor is commander and teamcaptain of the Apache Solo Display Team. Wally joined the Air Force in Currently he flies for the 301 squadron of Gilze-Rijen Air Base and is also Head Current Operations. 9 The Pilots Kapitein Paul Wokkel Webbink (30) Kapitein Webbink is sinds 2001 vlieger op de Apache. Zijn huidige functie is vlieginstructeur bij Bureau Opleidingen Luchtvarenden Apache van het 299 squadron van het Defensie Helikopter Commdando. In deze functie verzorgt hij opleidingen en bijscholingen voor Apache vliegers. Tijdens de demo vliegt Wokkel als co-piloot. In deze functie is hij verantwoordelijk voor de juiste sequence van de vliegmanoeuvres. Hij geeft aan Wally aan wanneer en waar deze manoeuvres worden ingezet. Hij zorgt ervoor dat continue het maximale vermogen beschikbaar is, zodat de manoeuvres elkaar vlot kunnen opvolgen. Sinds het begin van zijn carrière heeft kapitein Webbink 1800 vlieguren gemaakt, waarvan 1600 op de Apache. Wokkel is de afgelopen jaren zes keer op uitzending geweest naar Afghanistan. Captain Paul Wokkel Webbink (30) Captain Webbink is pilot of the Apache since His current job is flight instructor for the Bureau Training Apache of the 299 squadron of the Defence Helicopter Command. In his job he is responsible for the training of Apache Pilots. During the demo Wokkel is the co-pilot. He is responsible for the right sequence of the manoeuvers. He tells Wally when and where the manoeuvers have to be executed. He makes sure that maximum power is constantly available, so that de manoeuvres can quickly follow each other up. Since the beginning of his career Wokkel flew 1800 flight hours, of which 1600 on the Apache. Wokkel has been deployed to Afghanistan for six times. 9

10 Apache Solo Display Team Kapitein Martijn Pokon de Jong (33) Kapitein de Jong is sinds 2001 vlieger op de Apache. Zijn huidige functie is vlieginstructeur bij Bureau Opleidingen Luchtvarenden Apache van het 299 squadron van het Defensie Helikopter Commando. In deze functie verzorgt hij opleidingen en bijscholingen voor Apache vliegers. Pokon treedt op als eerste coach. In deze functie is hij verantwoordelijk voor de communicatie tussen het Apache Solo Display Team en de organisatie van het evenement. Tijdens de show bewaakt hij de veiligheid en assisteert hij de vliegers waar mogelijk. Sinds het begin van zijn carrière heeft kapitein de Jong 1700 vlieguren gemaakt, waarvan 1500 op de Apache. Pokon is de afgelopen jaren zes keer op uitzending geweest naar Afghanistan. Captain Martijn Pokon de Jong (33) Captain de Jong is pilot of the Apache since His current job is flight instructor for the Bureau Training Apache of the 299 squadron of the Defence Helicopter Command. 11 The Coaches Kapitein Job Blow Verberg (27) Kapitein Verberg is sinds 2008 vlieger op de Apache. Zijn huidige functie is gezagvoerder bij één van de operationele vluchten van het 301 squadron. Tijdens de demo treedt Blow op als tweede coach. In deze functie bereidt hij veel vluchten voor van het Apache Solo Display Team. Dit is zijn eerste jaar als coach en gedurende komend seizoen wordt hij opgeleid om te fungeren als eerste coach. Sinds het begin van zijn carrière heeft kapitein Verberg 750 vlieguren gemaakt op de Apache. Blow is de afgelopen jaren drie keer op uitzending geweest naar Afghanistan. Captain Job Blow Verberg (27) Captain Verberg is Apache pilot since His current job is captain at one of the operational flights of the 301 squadron. During the demo, Blow is second coach. In this position he prepares flight patterns for the team. This is his first year as coach and during this season he will be trained to become first coach. Since the beginning of his career captain Verberg made 750 flight hours on the Apache helicopter. Blow has been deployed to Afghanistan three times. 11

14 Technische Dienst Het Apache Solo Display Team heeft vier specialisten van de Technische Dienst ter beschikking om de show mogelijk te maken. Het technisch personeel draagt zorg voor het vlieggereed maken en houden van de Apache door middel van zogenaamde pre-, thru-, en post-flight inspecties. Voor elke vlucht wordt de Apache volledig gecontroleerd om een veilige vlucht te allen tijde mogelijk te maken. Na de vlucht wordt de Apache wederom helemaal nagekeken op cruciale punten. Vanwege de complexiteit van de systemen aan boord van de AH-64D Apache zijn er twee verschillende disciplines: Avionica en Onderhoud & Bewapening. Naar iedere show gaan van iedere discipline een opzichter en een specialist mee. Technical Engineers The Apache Solo Display Team has four technical specialists available to prepare and maintain the aircraft. The technical engineers take care of the flight readiness of the Apache by executing the pre-, thru- en post flight checks. Before every flight they completely check the Apache, to make a safe flight possible at all times. After every flight they check the helicopter at all critical points. Because of the complexity of the systems on board of the AH-64D there are two disciplines: Avionics and Maintenance & Weapons. Every show, a chief and specialist of both disciplines join the team. 14

16 Apache Solo Display Team Sergeant-majoor Peter Klootwijk (40) Sergeant-majoor Klootwijk is sinds 1991 werkzaam bij de Koninklijke Luchtmacht. Sinds 1996 is hij werkzaam bij het 301 squadron. Peter is begonnen als specialist, toen het 301 squadron nog met het A-model van de Apache helikopter vloog. Sergeant-majoor Klootwijk is chef van het technische team en is ook opzichter vliegtuigonderhoud binnen het Apache Solo Display Team. Daarnaast vervult Peter de functie van debriefer waarbij de technische staat van de helikopter na de vlucht wordt gemeld. Sergeant-majoor Klootwijk is in zijn carrière zeven keer op uitzending geweest naar Djibouti, Irak en Afghanistan. Hij maakt voor het tweede jaar deel uit van het team. Sergeant Major Peter Klootwijk (40) Sergeant-major Klootwijk joined the Air Force in Since 1996 he is working at the 301 squadron. 17 The Technicians Sergeant-majoor Erwin Veenstra (37) In 1997 is sergeant-majoor Veenstra begonnen bij de Koninklijke Luchtmacht. Hij is begonnen als specialist Avionica en is in 2004 bevorderd tot sergeant-majoor. Binnen het team is Erwin opzichter Avionica. In deze functie is hij verantwoordelijk voor het in optimale staat houden van alle vliegtuigelektronica en informaticasystemen van de Apache. Tevens vervult Erwin de functie van debriefer waarbij de technische staat van de helikopter na de vlucht wordt gemeld. Sergeant-majoor Veenstra is in zijn carrière zes keer op uitzending geweest naar Djibouti, Irak en Afghanistan. Hij maakt voor het eerste jaar deel uit van het team. Sergeant Majoor Erwin Veenstra (37) In 1997 sergeant-major Veenstra started at the Royal Netherlands Air Force. Erwin started as a specialist Avionics. In 2004 he promoted to sergeant-major. In the team Erwin is chief Avionics. He is responsible for keeping the Apache electronics and IT systems in perfect order. Besides that, Erwin is debriefer. After the flight the pilots report the technical state of the helicopter to him. In his career sergeant-major Veenstra has been deployed six times, to Djibouti, Iraq and Afghanistan. 18 Apache Solo Display Team Sergeant der 1ste klasse Joey Boertjes (32) Sergeant der 1ste klasse Boertjes is sinds 1996 werkzaam bij de Koninklijke Luchtmacht. In 1998 werd hij assistent vliegtuigonderhoud bij de Apache helikopter. Na het afronden van zijn technische opleiding is hij in 2001 als specialist Vliegtuigonderhoud geplaatst bij het 301 squadron. Sergeant der 1ste klasse Boertjes is ook binnen het team werkzaam als specialist Vliegtuigonderhoud. Hierbij is hij als crewchief verantwoordelijk voor het uitvoeren van de verschillende inspecties voor, tussen en na de vluchten. Daarnaast is hij samen met de coach verantwoordelijk voor de Public Relations van het team. Sergeant der 1ste klasse Boertjes is de afgelopen jaren zes keer op uitzending geweest naar Irak en Afghanistan. Hij maakte voor het tweede jaar deel uit van het team. Sergeant first class Joey Boertjes (32) Sergeant first class Boertjes joined the Air Force in In 1998 he was stationed as assistant maintenance at the Apache helicopter. In the position as crewchief he is responsible for the execution of the inspections, before, between and after the flights. 19 The Technicians Sergeant der 1ste klasse Benno Vlijm (27) Sergeant der 1ste klasse Vlijm begon zijn carrière bij de Koninklijke Luchtmacht in Vanaf het begin is hij geplaatst bij het 301 squadron als specialist Avionica. Ook binnen het team is hij werkzaam als specialist Avionica. Samen met sergeant-majoor Veenstra is hij verantwoordelijk voor het in optimale staat houden van alle vliegtuigelektronica en informaticasystemen van de Apache. Sergeant der 1ste klasse Vlijm is vier keer op uitzending geweest naar Afghanistan. Hij maakt voor het tweede jaar deel uit van het team. 20 Redskins 301 Redskins squadron De geschiedenis van het 301 squadron gaat terug tot 1955, toen de Groep Lichte Vliegtuigen werd opgericht als onderdeel van de Koninklijke Luchtmacht. In de beginjaren was de functie van het squadron onduidelijk, maar in 1965 kreeg zij de officiële status van mobilisabel squadron. In geval van een mobilisatie zou het squadron gevuld worden met reservepersoneel. In deze periode werd het squadron uitgerust met de Piper Super Cub, die later werd vervangen door de Alouette III. In deze hoedanigheid heeft het squadron nooit in actie hoeven komen en in 1993 werd het 301 squadron dan ook vermeld als het eerste squadron dat zou worden uitgerust met bewapende helikopters. Op 13 november 1996 werden de eerste 12 geleasede AH-64A s afgeleverd op vliegbasis Gilze-Rijen. De officiële overdracht vond plaats op 27 januari Vervolgens werd vier dagen later op 31 januari 1997 het 301 squadron officieel opgericht en werd op 4 februari begonnen met de Apache operaties. Echter, pas op 6 juni 1997 werd de AH-64A Apache officieel geïntroduceerd bij de Koninklijke Luchtmacht. In het najaar van 2000 werd een begin gemaakt met het afstoten van de AH-64A Apaches, in afwachting van de nieuwe D modellen. In mei 2001 werd de eerste AH- 64D overgenomen van het 302 squadron. Op 29 augustus 2001 arriveerde de Q-29 als laatste helikopter voor het 301 Redskins squadron. Op dat moment had het squadron de beschikking over 11 Apaches. In januari 2004 werd besloten om in het kader van bezuinigingen zes Apaches af te stoten. Met dit besluit werd ook besloten om het 301 en 302 squadron samen te voegen tot één 301 squadron. Ondanks de bezuinigingen bleef de moraal binnen het squadron hoog. Dat heeft het personeel bewezen door het tonen van grote inzet tijdens de uitzendingen in 2004 naar Kabul, Afghanistan en Irak. 20 Redskins

21 301 Redskins squadron The history of the 301 squadron goes back to At that moment the Group Light Aircrafts was established as part of the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF). In the beginning the mission of the squadron was not clear, but later on in 1965 the squadron got the official status of mobilizing squadron. In case of a mobilization the squadron would be filled with personnel of the national reserve. In this period the squadron was equipped with the Piper Super Cub, which was later replaced by the Alouette III. In this capacity the squadron never took part in a mission and in 1993 the squadron was stated as the first squadron which would be equipped with armoured helicopters. On 13 November 1996 the first 12 AH-64A Apache attack helicopters were leased from the United States Air Force. The official handover took place at 27 January Four days later at 31 January 1997 the 301 squadron was officially founded and on 4 February the RNLAF started with the helicopter operations. However, only on the 6 June the AH-64A was officially introduced at the Royal Netherlands Air Force. In the fall of 2000 the RNLAF started to push off the AH-64A Apaches pending the arrival of the new D models. In May 2001 the first AH-64D was received from the 302 squadron. On 29 August the Q-29 arrived as the last helicopter for the 301 squadron. At that moment the squadron has 11AH-64D Apaches available. In January 2004 the RNLAF decided to push off six Apaches as part of budget cuts. With this decision they also decided to combine the 301 and 302 squadron to one squadron. Despite the budget cuts the moral stayed high, which was proved during the deployments in 2004 to Kabul, Afghanistan and Iraq. Squadron 21

22 Ontwerpwedstrijd 2011 Voor 2011 was het Apache Solo Display Team op zoek naar een nieuw ontwerp voor zowel de helikopter als voor het logo van het team. Omdat dit ontwerp op korte termijn benodigd was heeft het team via diverse sociale/digitale media een beroep gedaan op de fans van het team. De vraag was simpel: wie maakt het ontwerp voor het Apache Solo Display Team voor het jaar 2011? De fans hadden slechts twee weken de tijd om een ontwerp digitaal in te sturen. Verschillende ontwerpen werden ingezonden. Het team heeft uiteindelijk gekozen voor het ontwerp van Sander van der Donk. Zodra het ontwerp bekend was, is dit doorgestuurd naar de schilders van vliegbasis Gilze-Rijen. Zij hebben het ontwerp technisch uitgewerkt. Daarna zijn de schilders, aangevuld met divers personeel van de vliegbasis, aan de slag gegaan met het aanbrengen van de stickers. Ook zijn direct de nieuwe goodies besteld waarbij het ontwerp van Sander van der Donk als basis diende. 22

23 Design Competition 2011 For 2011 the team needed a new design for both the helicopter and the logo of the team. Because the team needed the design on short notice, it made an appeal to the fans through social/digital media. The question was simple: who makes the design for the Apache Solo Display Team 2011? The fans had two weeks to make their design and send it to the team in a digital form. Several designs were received. The team finally decided that the design of Sander van der Donk would fit best to the team and helicopter. After the design was chosen, it was send to the painters of Gilze-Rijen Airbase, who started with the technical development of the design. After that, the painters of Gilze-Rijen Air Base applied the design to the helicopter. New goodies based on the design of Sander van der Donk were ordered too. 23

24 Vliegeropleiding Alle vliegers van de Koninklijke Luchtmacht beginnen hun opleiding op de Koninklijke Militaire Academie in Breda. Hier krijgen zij een algemene officiersopleiding, die afhankelijk van de gekozen studie één of vier jaar duurt. Hierna begint de vaktechnische opleiding tot vlieger op vliegbasis Woensdrecht. Hier volgt iedere aankomend luchtmachtvlieger de Elementaire Militaire Vliegopleiding om de basisprincipes van het vliegen eigen te maken. De Koninklijke Luchtmacht vliegt sinds 1989 met de Pilatus PC-7 Turbo Trainer, het lestoestel. Na de basisopleiding op vliegbasis Woensdrecht vervolgt de vlieger het opleidingstraject in de Verenigde Staten tot helikoptervlieger (AH-64D Apache, CH-47D Chinook, AS-532 U2 Cougar en AB-412 SP) of tot jachtvlieger (F-16). Een vlieger komt pas in aanmerking om demovlieger te worden als hij voldoende operationele ervaring heeft opgedaan in zowel binnen als buitenland. Airpower De Koninklijke Luchtmacht is een modern en technologisch bedrijf dat overal ter wereld ondersteuning levert aan militaire operaties, vredesmissies en humanitaire acties. De Koninklijke Luchtmacht wordt ook ingezet bij ondersteuning van de civiele autoriteiten bij rampenbestrijding en rechtshandhaving. De luchtmacht is permanent in staat airpower te leveren. Hiervoor zijn uiteenlopende soorten vliegtuigen, helikopters en wapensystemen beschikbaar. 25 Pilot training All future Royal Netherlands Air Force pilots start their training at the Royal Netherlands Military Academy at Breda. Depending on the study they choose, they will stay at the academy for one or four years. After that they will continue their technical training at Woensdrecht Airbase. At Woensdrecht Airbase future pilots receive their initial flight training. The RNLAF has been operating the Pilatus PC-7 Turbo Trainer since Thirteen of these trainer aircrafts are stationed at Woensdrecht Airbase. After an intensive program at Woensdrecht both helicopter and fighter pilots continue a training program in the USA for either one of the helicopters or the F-16. To become a demo-pilot it is required that you have enough experience as an operational pilot in national and international missions. Airpower The Royal Netherlands Air Force delivers firepower through airpower whenever so required by our society. The weapon systems of the Royal Netherlands Air Force enable air dominance, thus securing freedom of movement for airborne, landbased and sea-based operations. The Royal Netherlands Air Force carries out peace support operations in coalitions with its allies and jointly with the other service branches of the Royal Netherlands Armed Forces. The commitment to deploy and the actual deployment of Royal Netherlands Air Force units contribute to upholding the international rule of law.
