7 Voorwoord Preface Willemien van Aalst Foto Willemien: Roland J. Reinders Tijdens het Nederlands Film Festival (NFF) geven wij de Nederlandse cinema tien dagen lang het erepodium dat het verdient. Daarmee doel ik uiteraard op het hele spectrum: van speelfilm en documentaire tot televisiedrama en animatie, van arthouse tot mainstream en van klassieker tot transmediaal experiment, lang én kort. De diversiteit maakt deze kunstvorm zo vitaal, veerkrachtig en aansprekend. Aan ons de taak om al dat moois te serveren aan een groot en breed publiek. Aan jong (met de NFF speelplaats zelfs piepjong) en oud, aan dagjesmensen en veelkijkers, en aan studenten uit binnen- en buitenland. De 33 e editie van het NFF geldt als het onofficiële startschot van het nieuwe filmseizoen en is hét moment waarop de hele filmsector samenkomt. Het festival als ontmoetingsplek dus, voor professionals onderling, maar ook voor cultuurproducent en -consument. Het is een uitgelezen kans voor makers en publiek om elkaar te ontmoeten en in dialoog te treden. Dat is goed, want in het tijdperk van co-creatie en crowdfunding is er al lang geen sprake meer van eenrichtingsverkeer. Het programma steunt op een aantal belangrijke pijlers. Naast bekende blikvangers als de NFF Jaarselectie en de Gouden Kalf Competitie komt de in transitie verkerende beeldcultuur aan bod in Pop Up, terwijl NFF School en NFF Talent belangrijke platforms bieden aan een nieuwe generatie filmkijkers én -makers. De vele randactiviteiten, waaronder uiteenlopende publieksevenementen, filmfeesten en gala s, maken het feest compleet. De rode draad die dit jaar door het programma loopt, is een prikkelende. Het hoofdprogramma Naakt is een speelse verwijzing naar een van de hardnekkigste clichés die aan de Nederlandse film kleeft. Het thema vormt de kapstok voor een aantal benaderingen, waarin naast aandacht voor de controverse en het ongemak ook volop ruimte is voor bespiegeling en kunstzinnig naakt. With the ten-day Netherlands Film Festival (NFF), we give Dutch cinema the podium it deserves. I obviously refer to the whole spectrum: from feature film and documentary to TV drama and animation, from art house to mainstream and from classic to transmedia experiment, long and short. This diversity makes the art form so vital, resilient and appealing. It is our task to serve all these gems to a large and comprehensive audience. To young (with the NFF Playground even very young) and old, to day trippers and gluttons, and to students from home and abroad alike. The 33 rd edition of the NFF is considered the unofficial launch of the new film season and is the moment when the entire film sector gathers. So, the festival as a meeting place, for professionals amongst themselves, but also for culture producers and consumers. It is a window of opportunity for makers and audiences to meet and enter into dialogue. That is good, because in this era of co-creation and crowd funding, one-way traffic is definitely a thing of the past. The programme rests on several key pillars. Apart from wellknown eye-catchers like the NFF Annual Survey and Golden Calf Competition, the visual culture in transition is addressed in Pop Up, while NFF School and NFF Talent provide important platforms to a new generation of film viewers and makers. Scores of fringe activities, including various public events, film parties and galas, make the festivities complete. The leitmotiv of this year s programme is a rousing one. The main programme Naked is a playful reference to one of the most persistent clichés about Dutch cinema. The theme is a steppingstone for several approaches, paying attention to controversy and awkwardness, but also allowing ample space for reflection and artistic nudity.

8 8 Voorwoord De reputatie van de Nederlandse film staat ook buiten onze landgrenzen in hoog aanzien, vandaar dat er ook tal van internationale kopstukken, makers en producenten in Utrecht neerstrijken. In het Nederland-Ruslandjaar verwelkomen we onder de vlag Holland Meets Russia de nodige inspirerende vertegenwoordigers uit Rusland. Film is een cultureel exportproduct maar biedt daarnaast de kans tot internationale samenwerking en coproductie. Tijdens het NFF komen twee werelden samen, en dat is zeer beeldend verpakt in onze mediacampagne. Daarin is de hoofdrol gegund aan naamgenoten van bekende filmsterren en -regisseurs. Ik hoop dat u zich samen met hen en de beroemde dragers van dezelfde naam durft bloot te stellen aan ons veelzijdige en veelomvattende programma. Want bekend of onbekend, het NFF beschouwt ook u als speciale gast. In the Netherlands-Russia year, under the Holland Meets Russia flag, we welcome several inspiring representatives from Russia. Film is a cultural export product, but also offers opportunities for international cooperation and coproduction. At the NFF, two worlds meet, which has been expressively visualised in our media campaign. This gives the leading role to namesakes of well-known film stars and directors. I hope that you, along with them and the famous bearers of the same names, will expose yourself to our many-sided and comprehensive programme. 9 De Nederlandse film in 2013 Dutch Cinema in 2013 Jan Pieter Ekker Het hoogtepunt van het afgelopen filmjaar? Borgman naar Cannes! Op een mooie zondagavond in mei beleefde Alex van Warmerdams achtste speelfilm zijn wereldpremière op het meest prestigieuze festival van de wereld. Borgman was er opgenomen in de competitie om de Gouden Palm, met slechts negentien andere titels, van makers als Joel en Ethan Coen, Roman Polanski, Steven Soderbergh en Jim Jarmusch. Het was voor het eerst in achtendertig jaar dat een Nederlander meedong naar de Palm; Jos Stelling was in 1975 de laatste met Mariken van Nieumeghen. Borgman werd goed ontvangen. Insidious, nastily funny Dutch thriller Borgman is one of my favourite films at Cannes so far, schreef Guy Lodge van het invloedrijke Amerikaanse vakblad Variety. Ook The Hollywood Reporter ( an original work that should find an international niche ) en Screen International ( elegantly intriguing and often outrageously funny ) hadden lovende woorden over voor Borgman. Hoewel jurylid Nicole Kidman naar verluidt stevig campagne heeft gevoerd voor de film viel Borgman niet in de prijzen, althans niet officieel. Borgman won wel een troostprijs van de International Cinephile Society, die onder de indruk was van de vele bijzondere kinderrollen Borgman The film highlight of the past year? Borgman in Cannes! One fine Sunday night in May, Alex van Warmerdam s eighth feature film had its world première at the most prestigious film festival in the world. Borgman had been included in the competition for the Golden Palm, with only nineteen other titles, by cinematographers like Joel and Ethan Coen, Roman Polanski, Steven Soderbergh and Jim Jarmusch. It was for the first time in 38 years that a Dutch director competed for the Palm; Jos Stelling had been the last one, in 1975, with Mariken van Nieumeghen. Borgman was received favourably. Insidious, nastily funny Dutch thriller Borgman is one of my favourite films at Cannes so far, Guy Lodge of the influential American entertainment-trade magazine Variety wrote. The Hollywood Reporter ( an original work that should find an international niche ) and Screen International ( elegantly intriguing and often outrageously funny ) extolled the virtues of Borgman. Although jury member Nicole Kidman reportedly conducted an adamant campaign in favour of the film, Borgman was not among the winners. Not officially, that is. Borgman did win a consolation prize from the International Cinephile Society, who were impressed with the many exceptional parts played by children and for this reason created a special category: the debuting Elve Lijbaart and six other young actors were honoured as The Kids of Cannes. Not to say that otherwise it was all sorrow and misery, but Dutch cinema did not exactly have a heartening year. Since 1 January 2013, the Netherlands Film Fund has 9 million euros less to apportion, whereas their range of duties has increased. Netherlands Public Broadcasting (NPO) also had to make drastic cutbacks: 100 million, on top of an earlier 200-million cut. And with one stroke of the pen, the Media Fund, which annually supplies 16 million euros for dramas and documentaries, will be reorganised out of existence as per Apart from the retrenchments, filmmakers are especially hampered by the fact that the Netherlands, as opposed to the countries around us, does not have any economic incentives policy for film. This has farreaching consequences for the market share and international position of Dutch cinema: more and more business moves abroad, without any work coming back in the form of co-productions.

10 10 Jaaroverzicht en daarom een speciale categorie in het leven riep: de debuterende Elve Lijbaart werd met zes andere jeugdige acteurs geëerd als The Kids of Cannes. Niet dat het verder alleen maar kommer en kwel was, maar een al te vrolijk jaar beleefde de Nederlandse film niet. Het Nederlands Filmfonds heeft sinds 1 januari miljoen euro minder te verdelen terwijl het takenpakket is uitgebreid. Ook de Publieke Omroep moest flink bezuinigen: 100 miljoen bovenop een eerder korting van 200 miljoen. En met een pennenstreek werd het Mediafonds, dat jaarlijks 16 miljoen euro in drama en documentaires steekt, per 2017 weggesaneerd. Behalve van de bezuinigingen hebben filmmakers vooral last van het feit dat Nederland, in tegenstelling tot de landen om ons heen, geen economische stimuleringsregelingen voor film kent. Dat heeft vergaande gevolgen voor het marktaandeel en de internationale positie van de Nederlandse film: steeds meer bedrijvigheid verdwijnt naar het buitenland zonder dat vanuit het buitenland via coproducties werk terugkomt. Een Nationale Filmtop, een op verzoek van PvdA, VVD en D66 belegde bijeenkomst waarop de ministers Henk Kamp (Economische Zaken) en Jet Bussemaker (OCW) om de tafel gingen met het veld, moest verandering brengen in de ongelijke situatie. Bussemaker die eerder niet al te overtuigd had ingestemd met een onderzoek naar de mogelijkheden voor een tax shelter, een gunstige belastingmaatregel voor film erkende dat Nederlandse postproductiebedrijven voor beeld en geluid en ondernemers in film en media flink last hebben van de concurrentie uit EU-landen die wél fiscale voordelen bieden voor de filmsector. Het Amsterdamse filmlaboratorium Cineco, bijvoorbeeld, was al failliet gegaan om korte tijd later overigens een doorstart te maken als Haghefilm. Tot concrete plannen leidde de Filmtop niet, maar dat lag volgens Bussemaker niet alleen aan de overheid; het filmveld moest van de minister zelf met voorstellen en oplossingen komen. Maanden later werd op voorstel van de PvdA en D66 alsnog bepaald dat de Ministeries van OCW, Economische Zaken en Financiën samen moesten uitzoeken hoe de Nederlandse filmindustrie het beste economisch gestimuleerd kan worden. We kunnen niet wachten tot er straks een gelijk speelveld is, dan is er geen filmindustrie meer, aldus het PvdA-Kamerlid Jacques Monasch. De werkgroep moest kijken naar voorbeelden uit andere landen, belastingvoordelen en de gevolgen voor de financiën van de overheid. PvdA en D66 stellen een belastingvoordeel van dertig procent op de productie-uitgaven voor in Nederland. Een veilig instrument omdat de bijdrage pas beschikbaar wordt als de bestedingen al in Nederland hebben plaatsgevonden, aldus D66-Kamerlid Vera Bergkamp. Rond 15 september moest er duidelijkheid zijn. Er staat nogal wat op het spel, zoals blijkt uit de cijfers van een onderzoek dat in de zomer van 2013 werd uitgevoerd in opdracht van de Nederlandse Vereniging van Filmdistributeurs (NVF) en de Nederlandse Vereniging van Bioscoopexploitanten (NVB). Eén op de vijf Nederlanders gaat naar films van eigen bodem, luidde de belangrijkste conclusie. In 2012 werden bijna vijf miljoen bioscoopkaartjes voor Nederlandse films verkocht, wat neerkomt op 16% van het totale bezoek. In het eerste kwartaal van 2013 was het marktaandeel zelfs 22%. Het onderzoek wees verder uit dat de Nederlandse filmproductie sterk is geprofessionaliseerd. Er worden films gemaakt met hogere budgetten en dat zie je terug in de kwaliteit. Door een grotere aandacht voor post-productie zijn geluid en beeld verbeterd. Dat heeft veel goed gedaan voor het imago van de Nederlandse film. Deze wordt niet meer gezien als een inferieur product. Of het nu door dat verbeterde imago kwam of niet, ook in 2013 werden er weer tal van Nederlandse films en coproducties geselecteerd voor de belangrijkste internationale festivals. Boven is het stil van Matterhorn A National Film Summit, a meeting requested by the PvdA, VVD and D66, in which Ministers Henk Kamp (Economic Affairs) and Jet Bussemaker (Education, Cultural Affairs and Science; OCW) got round the table with the field, was set up to change this unequal situation. Bussemaker who earlier had hesitantly approved a study of the possibilities of a tax shelter, a tax measure favourable to film acknowledged that Dutch audio-visual post-production companies and entrepreneurs in film and media are seriously impeded by the competition from EU countries that do offer tax benefits to the film sector. The Amsterdam-based film laboratory Cineco, for example, had already gone bankrupt although shortly afterwards they started up again as Haghefilm. The Film Summit did not yield any concrete plans, but Bussemaker felt this was not just the government s fault; the Minister assigned the film sector to come up with proposals and solutions itself. Months later, at the suggestion of the PvdA and D66, it was yet decided that the Ministries of OCW, Economic Affairs and Finance had to jointly figure out how to best stimulate the Dutch film industry economically. We can t wait until there s an equal playing field, because by then we won t have a film industry anymore, said PvdA MP Jacques Monasch. The study group was assigned to look at examples in other countries, tax benefits and the consequences for government finances. The PvdA and D66 propose a tax benefit of thirty percent on the production costs in the Netherlands. A safe instrument, because the contribution will be available when the money has already been spent in the Netherlands, said D66 MP Vera Bergkamp. Around 15 September, things were finalised. There is a lot at stake, as is clear from the figures of an investigation executed in the summer of 2013 on the authority of the Dutch Film Distributors Association (NVF) and the Netherlands Exhibitors Association (NVB). One in five Dutch people goes to home-bred films, was the salient conclusion. In 2012, almost five million tickets for Dutch films were sold, which boils down to 16% of the total number of visits. In the first quarter of 2013, the market share was even 22%. The study also showed the Dutch film production has been substantially professionalized. Films are made with higher budgets and you see this back in the quality. Because post-production gets more attention, the quality of image and sound has improved. This has done Dutch cinema a world of good. It is no longer considered an inferior product. Whether it was the improved image or not, in 2013 numerous Dutch films and co-productions were selected again for the leading international festivals. Nanouk Leopold s Boven is het stil was chosen to open the Panorama Special section at the Berlinale. The Berlin International Film Festival also screened George Sluizer s Dark Blood, as well as Vincent Bal s Nono, Het Zigzag Kind (opening the Generation KPlus competition) and Willemiek Kluijfhout s documentary L Amour des Moules, (opening film of the Culinary Cinema programme). The minority

11 Jaaroverzicht 11 Nanouk Leopold was uitverkoren om de Panorama Special-sectie van de Berlinale te openen. Op het internationaal filmfestival van Berlijn was ook George Sluizers Dark Blood te zien, net als Nono, Het Zigzag Kind van Vincent Bal (als opening van de Generation KPlus competitie) en Willemiek Kluijfhouts documentaire L Amour des Moules, (als openingsfilm van het Culinary Cinema-programma). Ook de minoritaire coproducties Layla Fourie, The Broken Circle Breakdown, Tanta Agua (alledrie Topkapi Films) en Lifelong (Augustus Film) draaiden in Berlijn. Naast Borgman haalde ook het snoeiharde drugsdrama Heli, een coproductie van het Amsterdamse Lemming Film, de Gouden Palmcompetitie van Cannes (de Mexicaan Amat Escalante werd verkozen tot Beste Regisseur). Omar van de Nederlandse Palestijn Hany Abu- Assad gemaakt door Palestijnen in Palestina met Palestijns geld, afkomstig van vermogende Palestijnen werd bekroond door de jury van Un Certain Regard, de tweede selectie van het festival van Cannes. Voor de Tiger-competitie van het International Film Festival Rotterdam waren twee Nederlandse films geselecteerd, een unicum: De wederopstanding van een klootzak, het speelfilmdebuut van striptekenaar Guido van Driel, en Silent Ones, de eerste speelfilm van Ricky Rijneke. Matterhorn, het speelfilmdebuut van Diederik Ebbinge won in Rotterdam de UPC Publieksprijs. Kauwboy werd bij de European Film Awards bekroond met de European Discovery Award, als de ontdekking van het jaar. Boudewijn Koole s veelvuldig bekroonde jeugdfilm was ook de Nederlandse Oscar-inzending in de categorie Beste niet-engelstalige Speelfilm, maar schopte het niet tot een nominatie. De NTR-documentaireserie Het nieuwe Rijksmuseum won de Zilveren Nipkowschijf, de prijs voor het beste televisieprogramma. Regisseur Oeke Hoogendijk beschouwde de prijs als een opsteker voor alle documentairemakers. En ook voor het aanzien van kwaliteitsdocumentaires. Maar misschien wel de belangrijkste prijs was voor Erik-Jan de Boer. De Nederlandse animation director, die al vijftien jaar in Hollywood werkt, won eind februari de Oscar in de categorie beste speciale effecten voor zijn werk aan Ang Lee s spirituele epos Life of Pi. De Boer was eerder ook al geëerd door zijn collega s van de Visual Effects Society, de Amerikaanse vakbond voor makers van visuele effecten. Er kwam het afgelopen jaar een aantal markante acteurs en actrices te overlijden. Op 17 oktober 2012 stierf actrice Sylvia Kristel op 60-jarige leeftijd aan slokdarmkanker. Kristel werd internationaal bekend door haar rollen in de soft-erotische filmserie Emmanuelle, maar speelde daarnaast in tal van andere films, waaronder Alice ou la dernière fugue en Pastorale 1943, televisieseries en toneelstukken. Ook regisseerde ze de korte animatiefilm Topor et Moi, waarmee ze in 2006 op het Tribeca Film Festival de speciale juryprijs won. Will van Kralingen stierf op 9 november op 61-jarige leeftijd aan de gevolgen van kanker. De actrice won verschillende toneelprijzen en twee Gouden Kalveren: in 1995 voor haar rol in Havinck, in 2001 voor Storm in mijn hoofd. Haar laatste rol speelde ze in De goede dood, naar het gelijknamige, bekroonde toneelstuk van Wannie de Wijn. Op 24 november overleed Moniek Toebosch, beeldend kunstenaar, actrice, muzikant, filmmaker en niet in de laatste plaats de muze van Frans Zwartjes. Toebosch speelde vanaf 1969 in veel van zijn experimentele films, waaronder Spare Bedroom, Eating, Seats Two, Spectator, Pentimento en Behind your Walls. Acteur en zanger Jeroen Willems overleed op 3 december 2012 aan een hartstilstand; de 50-jarige Willems werd onwel tijdens een repetitie voor de galavoorstelling ter gelegenheid van 125 jaar Carré. In 2010 ontving hij een Gouden Kalf voor zijn bijrol als Claus in Majesteit. Op het afgelopen festival, waar hij Gast van het Jaar was, kreeg hij het Gouden Kalf voor Beste Acteur TV Drama voor Cop vs Killer. Op 1 juni maakte Marc van Uchelen een einde aan zijn leven. Hij co-productions Layla Fourie, The Broken Circle Breakdown, Tanta Agua (all three Topkapi Films) and Lifelong (Augustus Film) also ran in Berlin. Besides Borgman, the hard-boiled drug drama Heli, a co-production of the Amsterdam-based Lemming Film, got through to the Golden Palm competition at Cannes (the Mexican Amat Escalante was proclaimed Best Director). Omar by the Dutch Palestinian Hany Abu-Assad made by Palestinians in Palestine with Palestinian money coming from wealthy Palestinians was awarded by the jury of Un Certain Regard, the second selection at the Cannes festival. Boudewijn Koole s multi-award-winning youth film was also the Dutch Oscar entry in the category Best Foreign-Language Film, but failed to make it to the nominations. The NTR documentary series Het nieuwe Rijksmuseum won the Silver Nipkow Disk, the award for the best TV programme. Director Oeke Hoogendijk considered the prize a boost for all documentary filmmakers. And also for the prestige of high-quality documentaries. But the most important award may be Erik-Jan de Boer s. In late Het nieuwe Rijksmuseum February, the Dutch animation director, who has been working in Hollywood for fifteen years, won the Oscar in the Best Special Effects category for his work on Ang Lee s spiritual epic Life of Pi. De Boer was previously honoured by his colleagues from the Visual Effects Society, the American union representing visual effects practitioners. In the past year, a number of prominent actors and actresses passed away. On 17 October 2012, actress Sylvia Kristel died of oesophageal cancer at the age of 60. Kristel reaped international fame with her roles in the soft-erotic film series Emmanuelle, but she also played in numerous other films, including Alice ou la dernière fugue and Pastorale 1943, TV series and plays. She also directed the short animation film Topor et Moi, which brought her the special jury award at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival. Will van Kralingen died on 9 November, at the age of 61, of the consequences of cancer. The actress won several drama awards and two Golden Calves: in 1995 for her role in Havinck, in 2001 voor Storm in mijn hoofd. She played her last part in De goede dood, from Wannie de Wijn s prize-winning play. On 24 November, Moniek Toebosch passed on, the fine artist, actress, musician, filmmaker and last but not least Frans Zwartjes muse. From 1969, Toebosch played in many of his experimental films, like Spare Bedroom, Eating, Seats Two, Spectator, Pentimento and Behind your Walls. Actor and singer Jeroen Willems died on 3 December 2012 of cardiac

Samen met Nicolaine den Breejen bracht Van der Linden ruim veertig jaar eigenzinnige films uit, die op geheel eigen karakteristieke wijze de tijdgeest wisten te duiden en blijk gaven van maatschappelijke betrokkenheid. Animatiefilmer en beeldend kunstenaar Gerrit van Dijk overleed op 4 december op 73-jarige leeftijd. Van Dijk, die onder meer een Gouden Kalf en twee Gouden Beren won, werd in 1998 bij zijn zilveren jubileum als filmmaker benoemd tot Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw. Hij stond aan de basis van het Holland Animation Film Festival (HAFF) en het Nederlands Instituut voor Animatie Film (NIAf). Eliane Dubois, oprichter en chef d entreprise van filmdistributeur Cinéart, overleed op 20 augustus op 65-jarige leeftijd aan de gevolgen van kanker. Cinéart kenmerkte zich van meet af aan door het uitbrengen en steunen van kwaliteitfilms en auteurfilms. EYE vierde op 4 april zijn eerste verjaardag. Het nieuwe Filmmuseum aan het IJ bleek een doorslaand succes: half december 2012 verwelkomde EYE al de e betalende bezoeker. Het publiek komt overigens niet alleen voor de films; ook de tentoonstellingen werden goed bezocht. Het filmblad Preview Magazine kreeg er in de lente een broertje bij dat zich toespitst op filmhuistitels: Preview Arthouse. Kijkwijzer, het kwalificatiesysteem voor films, dvd s, tv-programma s en games, kwam weer eens onder vuur te liggen. Producent Dave Schram was boos omdat Kijkwijzer de kwalificatie voor zijn jeugdfilm De groeten van Mike! van alle leeftijden in 6 jaar veranderde en een geldboete oplegde van tweeduizend euro. Dutch FilmWorks was verbijsterd over de Kijkwijzeruitspraak over de Wendy van Dijk-film Ushi Must Marry. De distributeur kreeg duizend euro boete, omdat er niet was gewaarschuwd dat het taalgebruik te grof was voor 6-jarigen. De Amsterdamse rechtbank bepaalde dat de Nationale Politie televisieproducent Four One Media toestemming moest geven om politiekleding en politieauto s te gebruiken in Dokter Tinus. Kijkwijzer, the rating system for films, DVDs, TV programmes and games, was severely criticised again. Producer Dave Schram was angry because Kijkwijzer had changed the rating for his youth film De groeten van Mike! from all ages to 6 years and above, imposing a 2000 euro fine. Dutch FilmWorks was astonished at the Kijkwijzer verdict on the Wendy van Dijk film Ushi Must Marry. The distributor got a 1000 euro fine, because viewers were not warned that the language was too foul for 6-year-olds. The court in Amsterdam ruled that the National Police must give TV producer Four One Media permission to use police uniforms and cars in Dokter Tinus. Film critics took a beating: After his comeback film Het bombardement was torn to pieces by the national film press, director Ate de Jong published an essay, comparing critics with a pack of wolves that in their bloodthirsty hunt for self-glorification have lost their raison d être.

13 Nederlands Film Festival 2013 Netherlands Film Festival 2013 Anton Damen De 33 e editie van het Nederlands Film Festival (NFF) toont in tien dagen tijd het volledige spectrum van de Nederlandse film- en televisiedramaproductie. Het sleutelwoord daarbij is diversiteit. Uiteraard, het NFF zou het NFF niet zijn als het geen belangrijke premièreplaats vormt voor grote speelfilms, maar Utrecht biedt ook nadrukkelijk alle ruimte aan nieuwe korte en lange documentaires, televisiedrama en -films, korte films en animatiewerk van de hand van zowel gevestigde namen als beginnende makers en talentvolle pas afgestudeerden. Daarnaast biedt het festival de gelegenheid om recente filmproducties nog een keer op het witte doek te zien, evenals klassiekers en cultproducties uit het verleden. Dat betekent niet dat het NFF zich exclusief binnenskamers afspeelt; het festival zoekt de aansluiting met het publiek door tal van activiteiten in de buitenruimte. De centrale ontmoetingsplaats is het Festivalpaviljoen dat tijdens het festival op de Neude verrijst. Het NFF is zowel een publieksfestival als een inspirerende ontmoetingsplaats voor Nederlandse (en buitenlandse) professionals en vakmensen. Voor het festival is het vanzelfsprekend dat beide werelden niet hermetisch van elkaar zijn afgeschermd, maar in een ongedwongen atmosfeer samenkomen. Het hart van het NFF wordt gevormd door de Gouden Kalf Competitie. Deze Grote Prijzen van de Nederlandse Film worden op de laatste festivaldag uitgereikt tijdens het Gala van de Nederlandse Film, dat live in de huiskamer te volgen is via internet en Nederland 2. De Gouden Kalveren gelden al sinds jaar en dag als de belangrijkste filmonderscheidingen van Nederland. These Grand Prizes of the Dutch Film are presented on the last festival day during the Gala of the Dutch Film, which can be watched live at home via the Internet or Nederland 2. For many years now, the Golden Calves are considered the most important film awards in the Netherlands. The nominations and distribution are a jury matter, except for two Golden Calves: the Golden Calf for the Culture Award, conferred by the board of the Netherlands Film Festival Foundation to persons or organisations that made an important contribution to the Dutch film culture, and the Golden Calf for the Audience Award. For the latter prize, all feature films are eligible that reached the Golden Film status last year by drawing in more than 100,000 paying visitors. The Golden Film illustrates how the NFF, throughout the year, is continuously devoted to the promotion and support of the Dutch film one of the festival s nuclear tasks.

Het programma Naakt legt, naast films waar schande over werd (of wordt) gesproken, ook andere kunstzinnige en filosofische facetten die aan het thema raken bloot. Als het bewustwording van het naakte lijf terug te voeren is tot de Bijbelse appel, dan was de zondeval mogelijk niet alleen het ontstaan van de schaamte, maar ook de geboorte van de Kunst. Want zijn het niet de kunsten die trachten al het verborgene of dat nu fysiek, mentaal of metafysisch is tot uitdrukking te brengen, in een zoektocht naar het pure, het schone, het waarachtige? De paradox van het heden is dat de moderne mens meer onthult én verhult dan ooit te voren. Dankzij de sociale media tonen we onszelf aan de hele wereld, en privacy staat op alle fronten onder druk. Tegelijkertijd manipuleren we ons echte en online beeld zo, dat we er op ons mooist en voordeligst uitspringen. Naakt wil prikkelen, schuren, ontroeren en discussie uitlokken. Het hoofdthema Naakt kan op verschillende manieren worden geïnterpreteerd; blootgeven, schaamteloosheid, verhullen. Ik geef me bloot bevat films waarin kunstenaars, makers, acteurs en hoofdpersonen zich op hun kwetsbaarst tonen. Zij geven zich figuurlijk bloot, door bijvoorbeeld onomwonden hun persoonlijke worstelingen of crisissen tot onderwerp te maken. Ook Miek Uittenhouts fotoexpositie Chin Up, Head Down staat in het teken van Ik geef me bloot. Zij portretteerde twintig Nederlandse acteurs en actrices in theatrale dubbelportretten, onder wie Gouden Kalf-winnaars Sylvia Hoeks, Barry Atsma en Martijn Lakemeier. Zij laten zich tegelijkertijd van hun sterkste én zwakste kant zien. Met Lang leve de schaamteloosheid kan de kijker zelf de balans opmaken. Was de drang om naakt en seks te tonen in de jaren zeventig voornamelijk ingegeven door commerciële motieven, of waren de kunstenaars die heilige huisjes omver wilden schoppen hoofdverantwoordelijken? Lang leve de schaamteloosheid vergelijkt de chocquerende films en spraakmakende scènes van toen met de toestand op het witte doek anno nu, maar focust zich ook op controversiële producties waarbij de maker zeer bewust de grenzen van het betamelijke overschrijdt. De betekenis, invloed én lol van de verhulling van het eigen lijf of persoonlijkheid komen aan bod in De Verhulling, met onder meer een bijzonder open huis van Rob s Propshop. The Naked programme exposes, apart from films that caused (or cause) a moral outcry, several other artistic and philosophical facets that touch upon the theme. If the awakening to the naked body can be traced back to the Biblical apple, the Fall of man may not have been just the origin of shame, but also the nativity of Art. After all, is it not the arts that try to express anything hidden whether it is physical, mental or metaphysical, in a quest for the pure, the beautiful, the genuine? The paradox of the present is that modern man reveals and conceals more than ever before. Thanks to social media, we show ourselves to the whole world, and privacy is under great stress on all fronts. At the same time, we manipulate our real and online images to such a degree that we appear to our best advantage. Naked intends to incite, grate, move and elicit debate. The main theme is presented from three different angles. The I expose myself section comprises films in which artists, makers, actors and protagonists show their most vulnerable sides. They literally expose themselves, for example by blatantly making their personal struggles or crises the main subject of their work. Miek Uittenhout s photo exposition Chin Up, Head Down also belongs to this section. She portrays twenty Dutch actors and actress in theatrical double portraits, including Golden Calf winners Sylvia Hoeks, Barry Atsma and Martijn Lakemeier. In a single image, they show both their strongest and weakest side. With Long live shamelessness, viewers can take stock for themselves. Was the tendency in the 1970s to show nudity and sex chiefly prompted by commercial motives, or were the artists who wanted to attack secret cows primarily responsible? Long live shamelessness compares the shocking films and controversial scenes of those days with the situation on the silver screen today, but also focuses on controversial productions in which makers consciously cross the boundaries of what is decent. The significance, influence and fun of concealing one s body or personality are addressed in The Concealment, featuring a special open house by Rob s Prop Shop. Make-up expert Rob Hillenbrink, awarded the 2011 Golden Calf for the Special Jury Award for his great merits for Dutch cinema, demonstrates his extraordinary profession, which is usually hidden from sight. The guts, the vulnerable, literal and figurative nudity converge in the icon Sylvia Kristel. In the main programme Naked, the NFF pays tribute to the screen goddess who died last year and who reaped global fame with the soft-erotic classic Emmanuelle. Deze regisseur en scenarist van kwalitatief hoogstaand film- en televisiedrama (en ontdekker van veel acteertalent) is Gast van het Jaar. This director and screenwriter of high-quality films and TV dramas (and discoverer of acting talent) is the Guest of the Year. This means the festival pays homage to her by screening an extensive retrospective programme, from her award-winning TV debut Coma to Oscar-nominee Zus & zo and The Domino Effect, for which she received the Golden Calf for Best Director last year. Special attention goes out to the Dutch animation film. Because despite the political and economic situation, the Dutch animation film apparently has bright perspectives. Supplementing the usual screening of recent animations, the current generation of top animators presents, under the header They Move, So They Are, the makers they consider heirs to the throne. The title refers to the man who died in December 2012, Gerrit van Dijk, who apart from a laurelled animator was also a painter, tutor and talent scout. Van Het NFF produceert meer gespreksstof, en faciliteert dat ook middels speciale debatten, presentaties en masterclasses, voor publiek, professionals of beide. Niet alleen filmmakers van alle disciplines groeiden de afgelopen vijfentwintig jaar op met het fonds, acteurs en actrices groeiden mee. Er zijn binnen de verschillende formats verbanden ontwikkeld die uitgroeiden tot een duurzame samenwerking tussen producenten, regisseurs en scenaristen. Oog voor kwaliteit en het erkennen van de waarde van talentontwikkeling blijken terugblikkend de succesfactoren van het fonds. With NFF Talent, the festival concentrates on both fresh and established talents. The general public is introduced to promising young makers through screenings of graduation projects and films and documentaries by newcomers. For example, this section includes a high-standard NFF Debut Competition, featuring films that largely result from incentive projects like DOC25, NTR Kort! and One Night Stand, initiated by the Netherlands Film Fund, the Media Fund, the CoBO Fund and the public broadcasters. NFF Talent is supported by: 25 jaar Media Fund Unquestionably, the fact that TV dramas and documentaries deserve such a prominent place at the NFF is partly the merit of the Media Fund, which celebrates its 25 th anniversary this year. The Media Fund stimulates the realisation of cultural media programmes by national and regional public media organisations, by means of production subsidies, support in format development and activities in the areas of talent promotion and quality improvement. Without the Media Fund, the Dutch TV and film industry would look radically different, the Dutch documentary would have had less success internationally and particularly television dramas, youth dramas and documentaries would have been less developed. Not only filmmakers in all disciplines grew up with the Fund in the past 25 years; actors and actresses grow along with it. Within the different formats, associations were developed that grew into a sustainable collaboration between producers, directors and screenwriters. In retrospect, an eye for quality and the recognition of the value of talent development prove to be the success factors of the Fund. Holland Film Meeting The NFF is also known far beyond its borders, owing to the Holland Film Meeting or HFM, in the vernacular. When the ordinary festival audiences find their way to premières and events, foreign and Dutch film professionals execute great business behind the scenes. The HFM taking place at the beginning of the festival, from the first festival Thursday to Sunday - is a European film market. In association with European film funds, training programmes and other organisations for film financing, the HFM invites some two hundred film professionals to the so-called NFF International Screenings. The guests update each other on the latest developments and trends and pitch their new film plans to international sales agents, distributors and TV network commissioners. Previously realised films for which the HFM was a platform include Rundskop, The Happiest Girl in the World, Black Butterflies and Nono, Het Zigzag Kind, the opening film of the 2012 NFF. During this Netherland-Russia year, celebrating 400 years of international relationships, the HFM has a Russian touch, too. In Holland Meets Russia, the HFM centres on the flourishing Russian film

Als het gewone festivalpubliek haar weg vindt naar de premières en evenementen, doen buitenlandse en Nederlandse filmprofessionals achter de schermen goede zaken. De HFM - die plaatsvindt aan het begin van het festival, van de eerste festivaldonderdag tot en met zondag - is een Europese filmmarkt. In samenwerking met Europese filmfondsen, trainingsprogramma s en andere organisaties voor filmfinanciering nodigt de HFM ongeveer tweehonderd filmprofessionals uit voor de zogeheten NFF International Screenings. De gasten informeren elkaar over de laatste ontwikkelingen en trends én presenteren hun nieuwe filmplannen aan internationale sales agents, distributeurs en inkopers voor televisiezenders. 18 NFF Jaarselectie en Competities NFF Annual Survey and Competitions De Jaarselectie van het Nederlands Film Festival bevat een keuze uit de oogst lange speelfilms, documentaires, korte films en televisiedrama die sinds het vorige festival in 2012 gereed zijn gekomen. Een deel van deze films is geselecteerd voor competitie: de Gouden Kalf Competitie en/of de Debuut Competitie. Daarnaast kent het festival de NFF Studenten Competitie en de NFF Online Competitie. Gouden Kalf Competitie De films in de Gouden Kalf Competitie dingen mee naar de Grote Prijs van de Nederlandse Film - beter bekend als het Gouden Kalf - die in verschillende categorieën wordt uitgereikt. De films zijn geselecteerd door Willemien van Aalst (directeur), Claire van Daal (programmeur), daarbij bijgestaan door de externe deskundigen Ronald Simons (speelfilm, korte film en televisiedrama) en Thomas Vroege (documentaire) en voor de animatiefilms tevens door Gerben Schermer. The NFF Annual Survey comprises a choice from the harvest of full-length feature films, documentaries, short films and TV dramas that were completed since its 2012 edition. Some of these films have been selected for competition: the Golden Calf Competition and/or the Debut Competition. In addition, the festival has the NFF Student Competition and NFF Online Competition. Golden Calf Competition The films in the Golden Calf Competition compete for the Grand Prize of the Dutch Film - better known as the Golden Calf which is conferred in several categories. NFF Debuut Competitie Voor de NFF Debuut Competitie zijn speelfilms, documentaires, korte films en televisiedrama geselecteerd waarmee filmmakers hun officiële debuut maken. Films die gemaakt zijn aan een filmopleiding vallen buiten deze selectie. De Gemeente Utrecht heeft de Filmprijs van de Stad Utrecht aan deze competitie verbonden. De prijs bestaat uit een beeld van de Gemeente Utrecht en een geldbedrag van euro. Een jury beoordeelt de films van debuterende regisseurs en adviseert het stadsbestuur. Festivallieveling Het festivalpubliek kan stemmen op de favoriete lange speelfilm of lange documentaire. Alle speelfilms en lange documentaires in de Gouden Kalf Competitie komen in aanmerking voor de Festivallieveling. NFF Studenten Competitie Het Nederlands Film Festival is voor eindexamenstudenten van audiovisuele opleidingen vaak de eerste gelegenheid hun film aan een groot publiek te presenteren. Dit jaar vertoont het festival een keuze uit eindexamenfilms van de Nederlandse Filmacademie, de Gerrit Rietveld Academie, de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht, AKV St.Joost en de Willem de Kooning Academie. Deze films kunnen in aanmerking komen voor verschillende prijzen: De Tuschinski Award voor de beste afstudeerfilm van het afgelopen jaar. De Tuschinski Award bestaat uit een geldbedrag van euro, beschikbaar gesteld door Pathé Theatres BV. De Dioraphte Award is een speciale juryprijs voor een opvallende prestatie. De Dioraphte Award bestaat uit een geldbedrag van euro, beschikbaar gesteld door Stichting Dioraphte. De Filmproducenten Nederland Award voor de beste producent van het afgelopen jaar. De Filmproducenten Nederland Award bestaat uit een geldbedrag van euro, beschikbaar gesteld door de FPN. Ook zijn dit jaar twee afstudeerfilms van Nederlandse regisseurs aan buitenlandse academies in het programma opgenomen. Deze komen niet in aanmerking voor de studentencompetitie. NFF Online Competitie De NFF Online Competitie is de succesvolle online competitie waar korte Nederlandse films tot vijf minuten vertoond worden in de categorieën fictie, animatie, documentaire, videoclip en innovatief. De NFF Online Competitie fungeert daarbij als poortwachter in de enorme hoeveelheid video s die online verschijnen. Het festival zet de Nederlandse pareltjes van onder andere YouTube in de schijnwerpers. Er is een NFF Online Competitie UPC Publieksprijs en een beoordeling door een onafhankelijke vakjury voor de NFF Online Competitie UPC Fictieprijs, de UPC Animatieprijs, de TAX Videoclipprijs en de UPC Innovatieprijs. The director of this film receives the Golden Calf for the UPC Audience Award. NFF Debut Competition For the NFF Debut Competition, feature films, documentaries, short films and TV dramas were selected with which filmmakers make their official debut. Films made at film schools or academies are not included in this selection. The City of Utrecht Council attaches its City of Utrecht Film Award to this competition, consisting of a statue of the City of Utrecht and a cash prize worth 5,000. A jury will judge the films by first-time directors and advises the city council. Audience Darling Festival audiences can vote for their favourite feature film or documentary feature. All feature films and documentary features in the Golden Calf Competition are eligible for the Audience Darling. NFF Student Competition For graduating students from audio-visual schools, the Netherlands Film Festival is often the first opportunity to present their films to a large audience. This year, the festival screens a selection of graduation films from the Netherlands Film Academy, the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, the Utrecht School of Arts, AKV St.Joost and the Willem de Kooning Academy. The Film Producers Netherlands Award for the best producer in the past year. The Film Producers Netherlands Award is a 5,000 cash prize, put up by the FPN. The festival has also included two graduation films by Dutch directors from foreign academies in the programme. These are not competing in the student competition. NFF Online Competition De NFF Online Competition is the successful online competition showing short Dutch films up to five minutes in the categories fiction, animation, documentary, music video and innovation. The NFF Online Competition acts as a gatekeeper in the huge amount of videos appearing online. The festival spotlights Dutch gems from YouTube and other channels. There is an NFF Online Competition UPC Audience Award and judgement by an independent professional jury for the NFF Online Competition UPC Fiction Award, the UPC Animation Award, the TAX Music Video Award and the UPC Innovation Award. Hij werkte als programmamaker en eindredacteur voor de VPRO. Met Post Irkoetsk, een serie videobrieven uit Siberië, won hij de Zilveren Nipkowschijf. In de jaren negentig was hij vijf jaar lang directeur van het International Film Festival Rotterdam. Daarna hervatte hij zijn loopbaan als freelancer. Hij regisseerde de telefilm Liefje (2001) en het theaterstuk Mengelberg&Mahler (2009). Tot zijn 65e zwaaide hij vier jaar de hoofdredactionele scepter bij Vrij Nederland. Fallaux was lid van het oprichtingsbestuur van het Nederlands Filmfonds (en tot voor kort lid van de Raad van Toezicht) en medeoprichter van het Rotterdams Film Fonds en het Fonds Bijzondere Journalistieke Projecten. Hij bekleedde vele bestuursfuncties, onder meer bij het Holland Festival, het Prins Claus Fonds en Submarine Channel, en beoordeelt als adviseur nog steeds filmprojecten voor het Hubert Bals Fonds.
