It takes a bit to get used to the new term, but the enthusiasm stays the same. As His Royal Highness s birthday falls on a Sunday this year, some of the celebrations will be held on the Saturday and some will be held on the Monday. Please check the day in the area you live and give it your full support and show that you are a proud Dutch man or woman, the country that won all those medals at the winter Olympics, twenty four in total; 8 gold, 7 silver and 9 bronze medals. Many of the Societies will be having their Annual General Meetings in the coming months and I hope that the immigrants from the last twenty or so years will come forward to carry the flag for their country and keep some of the Dutch traditions alive. News Flash: Klaverjassers; I have just been informed that the Christchurch Society is not in a position to organise the Ring in Klaverjas competition this year. If any other Society is willing to run this event, please let us know, so that we can announce it in the next Schakel. Kees Dorresteijn Van de Secretaresse 2014 is now well under way; I hope the year s started well for you. Club meetings have resumed and committees will be getting ready for their AGMs soon, there ll be a - frantic? search for new committee members, in short, club life as usual. May it be a good year for all the clubs. As Federation Secretary, I occasionally receive requests. Several people have asked me where they can buy a sjoelbak. I m not aware of any sjoelbakmakers in New Zealand, but if you know of such a person, please send me an or give me a ring with his/ her contact details. And if you have one sitting unused in a corner, I m sure you can find a buyer for it via TradeMe or through your own club or De Schakel. I m in the near-retirement age group and several of my friends have recently had to apply for NZ Superannuation, which is a simple enough process. However, it becomes a lot harder when one also has to apply for AOW and/or Australian Old Age Pension or other overseas super, as required by New Zealand law. If I d only know or realised thirty-odd years ago how important it would become to keep detailed employment records! My advice to all immigrants under the age of 65 is: while you still remember, while you still have the papers, write down the details of your employment history, companies you worked for, dates you entered and left the country, what the reasons were, and any tax or social security numbers you were given. And keep those records up to date and in a safe place, you may need them at some time. Thank you to the committees who responded to the Executive s request for feedback regarding the proposed changes to the Constitution. We ll keep you informed. Visit our webshop: Van de NZ Netherlands Society Wanganui Hallo hier zijn we weer even vanuit Wanganui. Oh, wat was het moeilijk vanmorgen om uit bed te komen, 7uur en het was nog donker, het regende en het woei. Dit is me toch wat, begin Maart en het is koud. We komen dit jaar karig van onze zomer af. k Word er akelig van zeg nu maar eerlijk, als het weer zo doorgaat is het straks winter en daar ben ik echt nog niet klaar voor. Nou hou maar op met mopperen, het najaar kan ook nog best mooi zijn. Onze vergadering bracht het een en ander te weeg. Een paar onder ons hadden volgens ondergetekende een praat pil gehad en die werkte uitstekend. Ons uitstapje naar Bushy Park was mooi, het weer was goed. Iedereen heeft genoten. Koffie morgen en AGM op 9 April om 10 uur at the Marist Hall, en als de tijd het toe laat Rummycup, Klaver-jassen of gewoon een praatje. Zoals gewoonlijk, neem iets mee voor bij de koffie, een broodje voor lunch en een grote gouden coin voor de Hall hire. Ook in de toekomst het eerste Koningsfeest. Enige nieuwe ideëen om dit te vieren? Of zullen we het houden op een kopje koffie by de Red Lion. Corrie brengt Edith weer terug naar Noord-Broek. Sis krijgt haar broer uit Limburg over voor een poosje. Zulke dingen gebeuren niet zo veel meer. Dus geniet er van. Rummy-cuppen bij Riena en Han was ook weer gezellig, zou je ook willen spelen, neem dan even contact op met Riena. Dit is het dan weer van ons uit Wanganui. Groeten ook namens de committee, Riekie. Historische foto s van Midden en Zuid Limburg - Ontvangen van Hub Rekko, Meerssen Het gaat over alles wat met vervoer en transport te maken heeft van de Euregio maar vooral natuurlijk van en over Midden & Zuid Limburg. Er staan nu meer dan foto s in en een aantal films. En er zijn al in 26 maanden meer dan bezoekers geweest. 4 Van de Vice-Voorzitter Hello Everyone Here is some information regarding the Netherlands Club on the South Island. There are always lot of activities for the Netherlands community. You cannot have these activities if there is no clubroom, but luckily we have really great facilities. The clubroom gives the opportunity for people of Dutch descent to come together and enjoy each other s company and share Dutch culture. for a lot of people it feels like home. At this moment the clubroom is having a facelift (what we all really need when we re getting older)... After a fresh coat of paint and a few other renovations it will look as good as new! On Sunday, 13 April, the yearly Easter Market will take place at the Everglades with a visit from the Easter Bunny for the children. If you want to book a stall for the market ring Jose Nijstad at Everyone is welcome - there will be lots of games, Dutch food, and Easter eggs of course! On Sunday afternoon, 18 May, a Musical Variety Show, a combined event with the Austrian Society is in the planning. During this afternoon people who like to sing, recite a poem or play musical instrument can perform their talents before an audience. Met een vriendelijke groet, Marian Martens The Everglades Van de Nederlandse Ambassade The next activity will be on the 26th of April, which will be the celebration of Koning s Dag. There will games and a Vrijmarkt for the children in the Everglades carpark. This will be followed by a reception. Be sure to mark this very special day in your calendars! Zomerkamp speciaal voor Nederlandse Expat kinderen Laren, 25 februari De Taalfabriek en Nationale sportkampen organiseren dit jaar voor de tweede achtereenvolgende keer het Expatkamp. Een kamp voor Nederlandse kinderen die in het buitenland wonen en in de zomer naar Nederland komen. Tijdens het Expatkamp wordt de Nederlandse taal spelenderwijs bijgespijkerd! Als expat kind is het heerlijk om weer in Nederland te zijn. Je ziet je familie en vrienden weer, kunt boterhammen met pindakaas eten en weer lekker op de fiets overal naar toe gaan. Maar die Nederlandse taal die kan toch best lastig zijn. De Schakel April/Mei

5 Van de Nederlandse Ambassade - vervolg Het Expatkamp De Taalfabriek organiseert in samenwerking met Nationale Sportkampen het Expatkamp. Een kamp speciaal voor Nederlandse kinderen die in het buitenland wonen en willen werken aan hun Nederlandse taal. Dat is niet alleen heel leuk, maar ook heel leerzaam. Zeker als je kind te zijner tijd weer wil instappen in het Nederlandse onderwijssysteem omdat jullie weer in Nederland gaan wonen. Sport en spel Naast het bijspijkeren van de Nederlandse taal is er ook veel tijd voor sport. Tijdens het kamp op de kunstgras- en grasvelden van de hockeyclub in Laren komen onder andere voetbal, hockey, tennis, rugby, basketbal, korfbal en volleybal aan bod. 6 Nog meer uit Nederland - over AOW Geachte Nederlander in het buitenland, Gaarne wil ik de volgende feiten onder uw aandacht brengen. In 2013 heeft de regering besloten om de AOW leeftijd in fase te verhogen. Dit in het kader van de verhoogde levensverwachting van elke Nederlander. Op het moment is de verhoging bepaald, als je geboren bent na 31 maart 1956 en voor 1 januari 1957 in 2023 de ontvanger van de AOW 67 jaar oud moet zijn. Echter deze leeftijd is fictief immers in de aangenomen wet is opgenomen dat de levensverwachting van het Nederlandse volk mee gaat spelen en dat verhoging van de AOW leeftijd om de 5 jaar getoetst kan worden. Voor wat dit betreft is alles duidelijk, echter wat niet duidelijk is het verdampen van de opgebouwde AOW-jaren. Volgens de loonbelasting wet in 1964 is bepaald dat elke Nederlander ongeacht hij/zij werkt 2% opbouwt vanaf zijn 15e levensjaar tot zijn 65e levensjaar. Dus dat je uiteindelijk 100 % AOW kon krijgen. Echter bij het aannemen van de nieuwe AOW-wet in 2013 zijn ineens de spelregels tijdens de wedstrijd veranderd. In de nieuwe wet gaat men niet meer uit van aanvang maar van het einde, zoals nu is bepaald de Nederlander krijgt zijn AOW op 67 dan tellen we 50 jaar terug, de opbouw begint op zijn 17 levensjaar. Geen enkel probleem zie ik u denken immers van 17 tot 67 is 50 jaar en dat maal 2% is 100 % AOW. Fout gedacht, want er zijn zo ongeveer stemgerechtigde expats, die dachten dat hun opbouw begon op hun 15e levensjaar, maar nu de wet is veranderd ineens 4 % opbouw kwijt zijn als ze pas op 67 hun AOW krijgen. Toen de nieuwe wet werd behandeld in de tweede kamer zijn daarover vragen gesteld aan de Staats secretaris Klijnsma, maar deze kon er geen antwoord opgeven hoeveel Nederlanders door deze regeling werden getroffen. Ik ga ervan uit dat ze dat in haar onschuld heeft gezegd of geen grip heeft op haar ambtenaren, want deze regeling bespaart zeker met de huidige uitkering al 300 miljoen euro over de komende 8 jaar. Geen bedrag dat je even niet weet, als er in de tweede kamer vragen worden over gesteld. Wat veel erger is dat als deze wet in zijn huidige vorm blijft bestaan, de levensverwachting die om de 5 jaar word hergewaardeerd het zo maar kan zijn dat straks pas elke Nederlander op zijn 70 levensjaar AOW krijgt. Dan verliezen de Expats geen 4% maar 10 %. Conclusie: Het onrechtmatige afpakken van de opgebouwde percentage AOW tot Het onzorgvuldig handelen van de regering ten opzichte van de Expats Dreigende te korten van levensonderhoud van toekomstige AOW ers in het buitenland Verhoogd risico van terug keer van ouderen met alle gevolgen van dien Nu de het kabinet met een nieuw voorstel is gekomen om de leeftijd versneld te verhogen in 2015 en het recht om AOW te krijgen al in wil laten gaan als 67 bent in 2021, geeft dit een kans om deze onrechtmatigheid te reparen. Dus mail als stemgerechtige uit het buitenland aan de tweedekamerleden, eerste kamerleden en het ministerie van SZW. Voor de duidelijkheid. Ik neem even mezelf als voorbeeld. Oude situatie tot 1 januari recht op AOW 5 december 2023 dus 65 jaar oud Geboren 5 december 1958 volgens de wet loonbelasting 1964 opbouw van mijn 15 levensjaaar dus 5 december 1973, uit Nederland vertrokken 1 oktober Opbouw = 38 jaar x 2%= 76 % AOW Nieuwe situatie na 1 januari 2013 Recht op AOW 5 december 2025 dus dan 67 jaar oud Opbouw nu = telling begint in 1975 Dus =36 jaar x2% is 72 % AOW. 7 Van de NZ Netherlands Society Manawatu & Districts Inc. Calendar of events: Saturday, 26 April, 2014: BIG Dutch Day Out, Foxton, from 10:00am 3:00pm This is another great event! A specific Dutch day is planned adjacent to de Molen in Foxton. Come in Dutch costume if you have one or wear the patriotic colours of red, white and blue or perhaps the more fashionable orange! Just some of the attractions will be: Dutch Lieve Stem Orgel (Dutch street organ) Dutch accordion music Dutch apple pancakes (yum!) Horse and buggy rides Games and activities It will also be a chance to celebrate the first anniversary of King Willem-Alexander s coronation. This is a specific fundraising event to raise as much money as possible to fix the blades on the windmill, the iconic Dutch symbol in the Horowhenua. Sunday, 25 May, 2014, 3:00pm: Dutch Club AGM Come to the Awapuni Hall to enjoy fellowship and to find out how this amazing Dutch Club actually runs! There will be free refreshments and lots of talking. Sunday, 22 June, 2014, 4:00pm: Pot Luck Dinner at the Gallery Restaurant, Church St., Palmerston North. This is always a popular event and this year s theme will be Dutch fare. More detailed information in the next Eigen Wieken, so watch this space Rotorua Walking Festival March 2014 This event through the redwood forests of Rotorua offers routes from 10 to 42 km in length. The events begin and end at the Rotorua Dutch Club rooms. Als ik me buk, is het net of ik sterretjes zie. Mijn pols is iets te snel, mijn bloeddruk wat te hoog. maar ik ben nog fantastisch goed... zo op t oog Met de steunzolen die ik heb gekregen, loop ik weer langs s Heerens wegen, kom ik in de winkels en ook weer op het plein. Wat heerlijk zo gezond te mogen zijn. Wel gebruik ik een tabletje om in slaap te komen en over vroeger te kunnen dromen. Mijn geheugen is ook niet meer zoals het was en ik ben weer vergeten wat ik gisteren nog las. Ook heb ik wat last met mijn ogen en mijn rug raakt meer en meer gebogen. De adem is wat korter, mijn keel vaak erg droog. Maar ik ben nog fantastisch... zo op t oog. Is het leven niet mooi, het gaat zo snel voorbij, als ik kijk naar de foto s, over vroeger van mij. Dan denk ik terug aan mijn jeugdige jaren. Wilde ik een jas, dan moest ik heel lang sparen. Ik ging fietsen en wandelen, overal heen, en ik kende geen moeheid, zo het scheen. Nu ik ouder word, draag ik vaak blauw, grijs of zwart en ik loop heel langzaam, vanwege mijn hart. Doe het maar op uw gemak, zei de cardioloog. U bent nog fantastisch... zo op t oog. De ouderdom is goud, ja begrijp me wel. Als ik niet kan slapen en dan tot honderd tel. Dan twijfel ik, denk ik of dat wel waar is en of dat beeld van goud niet een beetje raar is. Mijn tanden liggen in een glas, mijn bril op tafel, gehoorapparaat in mijn tas Mijn steun zolen naast het bed op de stoel. U weet dus wat ik met die twijfel bedoel. Trek niets in twijfel, zei de pedagoog. U bent nog fantastisch goed... zo op t oog. En s morgens als ik ben opgestaan en eerst de afwas heb gedaan, lees ik het laatste nieuws in de krant. Ik wil toch bijblijven en naderhand doe ik van alles, eerst geef ik de planten water, de kamer stoffen doe ik later. Wel gaat alles wat traag heb na t eten wat last van mijn maag. Maar ik wil niet zeuren, want t mag, dat is heel gewoon op je oude dag. Aanvaard het rustig zei de psycholoog.. U bent nog fantastisch goed... zo op t oog. De Schakel April/Mei

8 50 years in New Zealand by Kees Dorresteijn - part was an important year for us, because we both reached another milestone (my 60th birthday and Dawn s 50th) and we celebrated this with our extended family and many friends at the Pavilion in Avalon Park. On the 8 August 1995 a team of us went to Wellington to take part in the commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of Victory Japan (photo with Wellington Mayor on the right) was my 5th Anniversary of President of the Federation of New Zealand Netherlands Societies and I am a great believer that after 5 years it is time to vacate that position and step aside to have a break. On the 5th May 1995 The Wellington Netherlands Society celebrated the 50th Anniversary Victory Europe by planting a Pohutukawa tree in Avalon Park. The tree was planted on a very wet day near our Clubhouse in Avalon Park with invited guests from our Dutch Embassy and also the Mayor of Lower Hutt. The tree has grown considerably since the planting and the Orange and the Red White and Blue ribbons are now well imbedded in the branches We received some more visitors from overseas, this time it was my second brother and his wife (pictured left). We traveled all over New Zealand again. I am not going into detail of all the places we visited, but I always tried to go to places where I haven t been before, so to see more of New Zealand myself. They were here for our birthdays and that was lovely for them to celebrate my birthday in the summer. In 1997 also after 5 years I made myself unavailable as President of the Wellington Society, although after one year I was re-elected as President of the Society. When I was doing some maintenance work at our flats a friend from one of the tenants approached me and asked if I had ever thought of selling the flats. I said that he came at the right time, because we had been thinking to have a break from renting out flats. We agreed on a price there and then and he said he would come back to me in due course. He just scribbled some particulars on a piece of paper and that was it. Because it was just a verbal agreement and he lived in Auckland and I had not heard from him for a long time, and the tenant did not know anything about the deal, I started to think that it was just a pie in the sky when I received a letter from his solicitor to say that his client was coming to Wellington to finalise the deal we had on the sale of the flats. When everything was finalised, we invested some of the proceeds in a commercial property with just one tenant - an undertaker. There will be a Post Mortem about that later in my follow up story. Also during that year we received information from my brothers and their wives that they had booked to go with a group on a tour to Bali, Lombok and some other Indonesian Islands in September and they thought it would be a nice idea if we could meet up with them there. We informed them that we had no plans to take them up on their suggestion. De Schakel April/Mei

9 50 years in New Zealand by Kees Dorresteijn - part 19 - continued In Memoriam - Jan (John) Langen Dawn and I thought about it later on and we thought it might be a nice idea to go after all and surprise them. We put the wheels into motion by getting in touch with the daughter of my oldest brother to get all the travel details and to promise not to tell anything about our plans. This was going to be a big task, because my niece and her mother were very close and to get all the information we needed and not to let the cat out of the bag, was going to be a difficult exercise. Our travel agent could deal with some of the details and we decided to get to Bali one day before the arrival of group from the Netherlands. We wanted the people from the hotel to know what our plans were and Dawn wanted to get something to cover her face so that she was not recognisable. A big long haired wig and sunglasses did the trick and when the people from the tour came up the steps from the hotel Dawn made a bee line straight to my oldest brother who just had had his birthday and wished him happy birthday with a hug. My sister-in-law was not impressed with this strange behaviour from this unrecognisable woman and showed this with the look on her face and that made Dawn laugh and it was then that she recognized that laugh and got all excited and the other people in the group could not figure out what was going on. In the evening they said that it was a pity that the group was only staying one day in Bali, because the following day the group was traveling by boat to Lombok, but we said that we were going to Lombok too, but we were going by plane. We had a nice time together and Dawn and I found our trip to Bali quite an experience, but we wouldn t go there again. Vakantie in Nederland In the next Part (20) another trip to the Netherlands de Molen founder John Langen passed away peacefully this morning, 14 maart Mr Langen s de Molen is a lasting legacy to our Dutch culture and has been huge in terms of attracting people to Foxton and the Horowhenua. So many people have had great pleasure visiting the mill. Right from day one, Jan was an inspiration to all of us, and in his own way he forged the way to bring the Dutch Community together around that iconic symbol of ours De Molen. Jan has always been extremely encouraging to us throughout the years, and I remember the hospitality he and his wife always put on for us with great fondness.
