Adapting the Salt Tolerance Assessment Framework STAF to higher salinities caused by climate change and to understanding gained since 1980, when the current STAF was developed - PhD WUR. Cultivation of salt tolerant agricultural and horticultural crops to adapt to salinisation caused by climate change: Sustainable exploitation of saline and brackish water - PhD VU. Mogelijkheden voor nieuwe gewassen 7. Anticipation and assessment of the effect of increasing salinity pressures on nature with monitoring, modelling and data assimilation - PhD WUR. In hoeverre kan natuur meebewegen met wisselende saliniteits omstandigheden 3 AIO onderzoek + staf begeleiding. Afstemming met WP2 en thema 3

13 Adaptive strategy (3): Dual abstraction of ground water Fresh holder concept (pilot project) Current practice: groundwater abstraction from a small fresh water lens overlying brackish groundwater (coastal areas) Risk of upconing of brackish groundwater Solution: dual extraction from the fresh water lens and the underlying brackish water layer Desalination techniques to treat the brackish water; concentrate is disposed of in deep (saline) aquifer Result: upconing of brackish water reversed, stable fresh water lens, sustainable extraction possible Upconing of brackish ground water fresh holder 13
