2 Curriculum Vitae Curriculum Vitae On the 20th of February 1983 Klaas Wardenaar was born in Heerhugowaard, the Netherlands. He finished his secondary education at the Stedelijk Gymnasium Arnhem in 2000 and in the same year, he started his study of psychology at the Radboud University Nijmegen. In the process of obtaining his master s degree in neuro- and rehabilitation psychology, Klaas did an internship at the department of psychiatry of the University Medical Centre in Utrecht in Here, he conducted neuropsychological assessments and psychiatric screenings with schizophrenia patients. In the following year, he did his research internship at the Clinical Neuroscience Lab of the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) in Los Angeles, California. In 2006, Klaas graduated and worked as a neuropsychologist at GGZ Meerkanten in Ermelo. From the beginning of 2007 until the end of 2011, Klaas has worked on the research, presented in this dissertation. During this period, he earned a post-doctoral master s degree in epidemiology from the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. Currently, Klaas works as a postdoctoral researcher at the Interdisciplinary Centre of Psychopathology and Emotion regulation (ICPE) of the department of psychiatry at the University Medical Centre in Groningen. In his research, he focusses on ways to deconstruct heterogeneous psychopathological constructs into more homogeneous entities, in order to increase the specificity of psychiatric diagnostics. 181

4 Dankwoord Dankwoord Dit proefschrift was niet - of met aanzienlijk meer moeite - tot stand gekomen zonder de hulp en betrokkenheid van vele mensen. Al deze mensen wil ik hierbij bedanken en een aantal in het bijzonder. Allereerst wil ik mijn co-promotores Erik Giltay en Tineke van Veen bedanken voor hun goede, leerzame en inspirerende begeleiding in de afgelopen jaren. Onze wekelijkse bijeenkomsten waren altijd zeer nuttig, maar beter nog, ook altijd erg gezellig. Ook mijn promotores Frans Zitman en Brenda Penninx ben ik veel dank verschuldigd. Ondanks het feit dat ze beiden altijd een onmenselijk drukke planning hadden, toonden zij tijdens onze maandelijkse bijeenkomsten altijd grote betrokkenheid bij mijn onderzoek en mijn persoonlijke ontwikkeling. De afgelopen vijf jaren waren een stuk minder plezierig geweest zonder de vele collega s die ik in het LUMC heb leren kennen. Met name mijn collega s op de kantoortuin en in het NESDA-team wil ik daarvoor hartelijk bedanken. Ik wil mijn ouders en broers bedanken voor hun steun en betrokkenheid. Op momenten van voor- en tegenspoed kon ik onvoorwaardelijk op hen rekenen. Hierdoor kon ik mij vol vertrouwen overleveren aan de grillen en onzekerheden die soms bij het leven van een wetenschappelijk onderzoeker horen. Ten slotte wil ik mijn vriendin Hanneke bedanken omdat zij als geen ander vanuit haar eigen ervaring met mij mee kon denken over alle aspecten van het onderzoek doen. Dit is van onschatbare waarde geweest voor de totstandkoming van dit proefschrift. Ik ben haar echter bovenal dankbaar voor het feit dat ze mijn leven elke dag weer liefdevol en kleurrijk maakt. 183
